Hello.
In a few months i will be buying my first car. I have no clue what to look for when buying a car. If any of you could help with that, it would be great.
I am also looking for suggestions for a first car. The miles are not really important, just nothing more that 125,000. It has to have 4-wheel drive, and be capable of pulling at least ONE snowmobile. I will be in the woods a lot with this car, so a lift kit is not necessary but preferred. I was thinking of a Jeep Cherokee or a Dodge Durango. What do you suggest?
I am also just curious to see what your first car was/is. Just say the year model etc...
Thank you in advance, for any help.

My first car was a '92 Pontiac Grand-Am. It was my sisters old car, so it was beat to hell when I got it. I drove that for maybe 6 months then got my '95 Ford F-150. I help out on the farm and occassionally trailer the sleds or quads, so a pickup made sense for me. I've had that for around 7 years now, and despite my beating on it through highschool, is still driven whenever I am home.

I dont have that long until ill be in the same spot as you. Actually today i was thinking about it. I know that if i have a truck, ill be towing, hauling things, and just working it. I need something that can pull a trailer, preferably our 24ft 4 place. If you know you will be towing a good bit, and would use it to work some, i would get a truck.I could buy trucks all day around me for under 2k. Some of them are 4wd diesels. If you know you will be towing a good bit, and it wont be a light load, id go with a diesel. A lot of the time diesels will last longer then gas motors, have more torque, and get better economy. They hold their value better, but now for some reason diesel is more then gas. A truck might not always do as good off road as a SUV, but it makes up for it in other places. For my self ive basically ruled out getting a car or a Jeep or something. For you, it might be different. Thats my opinion.

First car was a 1988 Mustang GT (hence the 88 in my username). Bought it my junior year of high school and fixed it up over the years to where she is at now.
My second vehicle was a 94 Grand Cherokee AWD with a 318. I bought it my senior year in high school. I put a lift on it and some aggressive tires. It was a nice little vehicle but I get a little bit better fuel economy with my full size F150. It rode nice and handled nice in the winter. Overall a very comfortable vehicle. I also was always hauling stuff in the back treating it more like a pick up than a suv. I needed something to pull trailers and haul things so a pickup was more of what I needed.
I am Ford biased but a 97-03 F-150 is a good truck and I have seen them going cheap around me for around $5000.
Here is mine:
It all depends on what you are going to use it for or need to use it for. But weigh you fuel costs, for a one or two mpg less you can get a full size truck over a Jeep or Durango.

My first car was a 1986 Monte Carlo. I'm willing to bet money that my sled was more power then it did.
What's your problem? RUFWM?

My first car was an 85 Mustang Convertible.
I would recommend a Ford Ranger, they are sporty, get decent mileage, and can tow smaller trailers.
Good luck.

Thank you all for the input. I will look into the Ranger. What about the Chevy S-10? I have always liked the looks of the S-10 ZR-2. can someone fill me in on which is a better truck?

My first car was a 91 Eagle Talon TSI.
Id stay away from a jeep or durango... they will be pigs on gas.... id go with an S10 or a small dakota with the 6er in it. I had a buddy trade his 89 chevy half ton off on a 02 ford ranger and he said he got no better milage with the ford ranger then he did with his truck.... not sure if thats all rangers but didnt sound good to me

i pulled my home made 1.5 place trailer with my Cherokee, only problem was the breaks on Cherokees suck, so you have to drive accordingly. i got 15-17mpg summer and 10-15 in the winter, but alot of that was in 4wd playing in the snow. since my Cherokee is not street legal any more i have been looking at some rangers. found 4x4 v6 5speed, enough to pull my small trailer and get through the snow.

I have a 99 Ford escort zx2 that i drive as a daily driver, and a 84 Chevy k20 with a 427 bbc that im building. But ya i say s-10 for a crossover. It gets good gas mileage, and you can still haul and pull stuff.

Id go with a Grand Cherokee with a V-8. They get decent milage and have good power. I also like the looks of them. Put on a critter hitter and some aggressive tires and the thing will be awesome. A buddy of mine had a Grand Cherokee a while back. He could drive into the middle of a swamp hole and still get out no sweat. I would have trouble with it with a good rolling start. It was an awesome machine. THen he went and rolled it down an embankment.

if you do look at a jeep grand Cherokee v8, watch out for the awd np249 transfer case if it has 80k+ miles. they use a viscus cuppler for a center differential and they only have a life span of 60-80k. you can tell when they are bad when the tires chirp when you try to turn or it comes to a stop in a turn because the VC is locked up. easy to change but its $350-500 and is very hard on the drive train if the bone head before you ignored it. othen then that they are nice suv's

i have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee, i would not recommend one to anyone. they fall apart, weak brakes, and they dont like to tow heavy trailers in the summer. I would not buy a used chysler product, unless you know that it was taken care of, from day one. i have had four s10's, they are known for upper and lower ball joints. rangers are the best trucks for smaller trucks, dont get one with a manual transmission. they are very weak and hard to find a used replacement. i would get a ford ranger with a 3.0 liter v6 and automatic transmission, and change ALL the fluids right away.
the ford rangers have a problem with the rear leaf spring mounts rusting out on the frame. they are a pain in the butt to replace. parts and labor at a repair shop $700-1,000.

my first car was a 1998 Red Chevy Monte Carlo i like that car, my first 4x4 was a 2000 Jeep cherokee sport..that thing had some power, i really like how it took mud, the tires were bald but that thing never got stuck once, it had a 4.0 L in-line 6. alot of power for a v6, but if i were you, id get like a 95-97 Nissan pathfinder, they have limited slip differential, my uncle hauls his 4 place, camper, and boat around with that thing and it still gets amazing gas milage, thats my 2 cents, but just so you know any jeep you get will really bite you in the rear with gas, everyone tried telling me that and i just didnt think anything of it, when gas was close to 3 bucks a gallon, i was paying over 80 a week for gas on that jeep thats 320 in gas alone for a month on that thing. if i were you i would not get an S-10 unless it were the ZR2, rangers are nice but small, V8 dakotas are pretty ridiculous maybe you might want to stick with the v6 on those, if you go with an suv though id go with the pathfinder with the LSD, durangos are nice too.

My first was a '92 toyota little pickup. It was nice to have the box and they can pull small trailors ( might only do it in 4th but it'll do it). I'll never win a race in it but I get 27 mpg, 30 if I'm being nice to it.
