Well, I made it all last year without an engine failure in the mod. And made it most of the way through this year. But alas, my carelessness got the best of it.
Temp was 10F, I was jetted and needled for about 20something, and thought I would be OK if I didn't do much prolonged WOT. I was mostly right on that, but not completely.
We had just went from a section of trail that was lacking snow so my water temp was up in the low 160's. Thats when I have my digatron flash at me to warn me. We had already put on 60 miles for the day and we were 5 miles from the trailer and calling it a day. We pulled up to a section where it travels down a wide open ditch and my buddy and I drag raced. The sled was ripping hard (as they always do before they blow), and I was just about to let off when the motor starts losing power fast. Whenever a sled dies at WOT it is never good. I knew immediately what happened and shut it down and came to a stop. Pull the cord and the motor was very stiff. Started cussing. Didn't pull it over any more and I rode my buds sled back to the truck to get the trailer. To minimize the damage I didn't want to start it again so we dragged it onto the trailer.
Lessons learned: Just because it hasn't blown up, doesn't mean you can be careless with your riding. The combination of leanness and water temp I think did it in. Hopefully I can get it back together so I can ride this weekend. And jet it up a size or two.
Anyway, here are the pics:
exhaust side of piston:
trail compression dome (no damage at all)
Intake side of piston
Intake side of cylinder. Not too bad, can easily be cleaned up
Exhaust side of cylinder. Lots of aluminum deposited. I didn't see any nicasil damage, but there may be some hiding behind the aluminum deposits. Hopefully it doesn't need replating :-(

If it only requires acid and a light hone I will be riding this weekend. If it requires re-plating or welding I won't be. The shop already has the jug so hopefully I'll hear in the next day or two what the verdict is.

Factory mod sled. Not looking for great reliabilty just mainly used in race applications but polaris is useing them on there sleds. Not sure what they are thinking.

You would think polaris would have learned from the early revs with the single ring pistons.

Good luck with the acid, hopefully it doesn't need re-plating.
was this an EFI mod? Were you running it leaner to get a few more hp? Running leaner is scary in my mind...

I didn't really have much hillcross plans this year. We'll see. It is a good time but 5 years of it might be enough.
Tempaflow wouldn't be a bad idea.
And yeah, I brought it locally since I was hoping that it wouldn't need replating. At first glance the nicasil looks perfect still, but we'll see once the aluminum is removed. I'd go with ya Jon but having it ready by thurs would be tough if it wasn't local. We'll see what they quote me for a price on it if it does need replating.

Single rings are nothing new, Polaris used singles in all the old (80's) Indy 400's and 600's. I still have a 85 400, it has 8800 miles, 115 psi comp, original pistons and rings.
