i am trying to get into snowboarding. i went to Wachusett mountain and tried it out with a rental board. my friend said i did really good for my first time, so im going to try it out.
i have been on craigslist and someone sent me an email with a LIB TECH Matt Cummins snowboard. i was wondering, is this a good board? is it a real brand? the reason i ask if it is a real brand is for skateboarding, there are real decks, then there are like wal-mart board. and i don't want to look like a poser at the mountain haha.

ive been snowboarding for 8 years now, do NOT get a Lib Tech, go with Rome, or Burton. Burton has always been a big name and they always have a heavy price tag. Rome is a up and coming company that will be on top in the next few years. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

What type of riding do you plan on doing? There are diffrent boards for diffrent styles. I would stay away from Lib Tech because they are a park board not for beginers. I would look at Salomon, Rossignol, cheaper Rome boards, Ride, cheaper Forums, and cheaper Burtons.

I'll tell ya what, when my brother and I were growing up, we would go to the local swap and sell every year or so, sell our old stuff, and buy newer. If you can find something like that, it's your best bet. People will sell things dirt cheap, and you could walk out of one with a complete setup for not too much money. You're also not paying for rentals, the stuff is actually yours so you can sticker away, whatever you want.

Ours were usually in the September/October area.

I wouldn't bother buying for this season, cause if you/your feet get bigger, you'll have to buy different stuff anyway. Rent it out, then over the Summer check around.

haha only a 100 dollars on a board is hard to do, uhm let me check craiglist for you and see what i can find, first off i need your height and weight, and what type of snow youll be riding, since this is your first year im guessing you wont be needing anything to special like a more moderately priced burton, just a simple free ride board with a wood core would do you.

well im planning on buying boots next season. i am 5' 6" ish and 175lbs. im not really sure on what to call the riding im going to be doing. its just going down the mountain. just groomed trails, i don't think im going to be doing any park.

175 and trail riding should be easy to find, uhm i am finding alot of really good boards for about 125-150 but its just the board, not finding alot of bindings but im still looking in the massachusetts area for stuff on craigslist for ya.

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/spo/106...76051.html

Burton Fluid 164, larger board that will give you plenty to grow into, larger board tends to give you more control which you deffinately need as a beginner. the board is listed as 139, you can get him down to 100 most likely. no bindings with it.

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/spo/105...35849.html

this is also a decent setup, i personally wouldnt buy Gnu now, but as a beginner, your gonna beat the board up alot, hell even now i still beat my board up running over rocks out west. its a board and bingings for 140. not as nice as the burton but it does come with bindings. a little shorter too, but about your size for a 175 lbs man. not sure what size the bindings are, doesnt say in the ad.

either are decent, but not my personal favorite. it all depends on the condition of a board. if they dont have alot of knicks or dings, hell yeah take the deal. i they look like they have been throughly abused like my old boards, then they might not be worth it. i doubt id be able to get 20 dollars with my boards, i put them through hell. i got a chunk about 16 inches long missing out of the bottom of mine that is about a half inch deep from riding over a rock out in utah.

LibTech makes really good decks. I have an old Burton charger I want to get rid of, but its really small. 143. I now ride a Forum Peter Line pro model 158 wide and love it.

The K2 Satellite is an excellent starter board. It's got a relatively soft flex, which is very forgiving. My vote would be for that board with the Burton bindings. I got into the sport about 7 years ago, and I still have my original set-up; a 2002 model K2 Trucker 159 with 2003 K2 Plasma step-in high back bindings with matching boots (I forget the exact model), still works great for me when I actually get out to ride.

A majority of the posts so far i would have to disagree with only on personal preference.

I rode snowboard for about 5 years then broke my back and have only rode a few times since then.
I rode the mountains on a kmart board with nice bindings and it was awesome for only 100 bucks.
I also rented a burton board and could only tell a slight different while turning, other than that not worth the extra coin!

are you serious? you think a wal mart board can even compare to burton? dont even get me started haha. maybe a starter might not notice the difference. but there is a HUGE difference. the difference is HUGE when it comes to the quality of the bindings, which in my opinion are the most important part, they tend to wear old pretty quick and you might only be able to get a season and a half out of bindings from wal mart, while my burton bindings have lasted me 5 years now by the end of this season. if you ride a wal mart board, and never truly experienced a good quality board, you have no idea what your missing OR what your talking about. i use to ride my old wal mart board on the hill by my house, if you count those days, ive been snowboarding for close to 12 years. but i dont count those days, cause i dont even consider riding a wal mart board snowmboarding.

I would stay away from Lib-tech's i always rip the edge out of them. try to go with a rome, forum, of ride. I would recondmend a Ride DH. I dont have one but i have ridden a few. they are great all around board at a good price.

im pretty sure burton doesnt make santa cruz... but i believe they did have a board named that awhile ago... not 100% though. but im pretty sure santa cruz is their own company. the only company burton owns are anon, and a few others i cant think of off the top of my head, but those are clothing companies, not any other board companies.

i think im going to go with the K2 with the Burton freestyles. my friend has freestyles and i liked them a whole hell of a lot better than the ones i rented. here is a picture. im going to ask him if there are any chunks out on the bottom first though.
