I have taken up making maple syrup and stuff. Just curious if anyone else is/has.

My third/fourth/fifth taps all look like this

Production as of March 18th
Production as of March 18th

I made 1.5 pints last night that is not in the picture.

I am getting better at it. It takes alot of time and patience. I visited a maple producer last week for a tour in the woods and their shop. I am going back this weekend.

I try to boil it down outside as much as I can and then finish it inside on the stove (I have a vent going outside). But with the weather being what it has been I have been doing more of it inside for hours and hours.

My sap stopped flowing yesterday because of the weather, hopefully it starts back up today and goes for another week or two.

My candy thermometer is a pos, I need to upgrade already and get a hydrometer setup. I am definitely not a major producer, just a guy screwing around. Although I could foresee myself taking this on in the near future and dramatically increasing volume.

Just learning something new that is fun. I have a bunch of syrup and a little maple candy. I plan on making maple candy in molds, maple cream, and maple jelly with some of my next batches (weather permitting).

My taste buds are too civilized to enjoy most of the "real" maple syrup I've tried.

Matt, just don't get a poison oak tree mixed up with a maple. Ha ha.

I remember when I was younger I used to help my dad and his friends make it. It really does take some time. But you cannot beat the taste of it! Its way better then the store bought syrup if you ask me.

I think we had about 10 taps at the time. I'm really not to sure how much syrup we would end up with.

It is also kinda wierd how some trees make better syrup then otheres. Also I remember how some days are buckets would be barely full and the next day when it got warmer they would almost over flow.

Also on some of the bigger maple's we would put 2 or even 3 taps on a tree. I'm not sure if that harmed anything or if was a good idea or not. But I remember when we did that all of the buckets would be full.

I know a friend of mine has 30 taps going rite now. He said he is about done tho he is just getting burned out of making this year. I will have to ask him how much he ended up making this year. I know his mom makes all different kinds of stuff with it tho.

Yup my cousins have 1500 trees tapped this year and have a big evaporator, Ill take some pictures of it tomorrow when we go and collect tomorrow morning. 850 of the trees are on a gravity feed pipeline system that all leads to a holding tanks. The trees havent been running very good this year tho, hopefully it turns around.

Yep, I went last year. I do not think I am going this year. However, this weekend and next weekend are "maple weekend". I have a couple friends coming over and we are going to a place in berkshire that I went to last week and is having a bunch of samples and what not. Should be fun! We are going to one in Newark Valley also tomorrow.

7 I think

I have a mess to clean up. I just had the bottom of a mason jar give out and put 1/2 a pint of HOT syrup all over my counter, cupboards, and floor.

It is almost 1 a.m. and I am sitting here stiring making more maple butter.. keeps me out of the bar I guess.

I cleaned it up with a bunch of hot water and a mop. Took me 45 mins. Total Suck. My hobbies keep me entertained and gives me something to talk about and educate others. Unfortunately, most of my friends seem to just laugh at me haha. BUT, two of our friends went with us to a few sugar shacks this weekend for "maple weekend" and loved it. When we got home they emptied my buckets and asked me to make them some. I sent them home with the 3/4 a pint I made for them while watching movies. One of the places compared store bought JUNK to what they sell. They had bottles there of aunt Jemima and their stuff. Was a night and day difference especially when you compared ingredients!!!

I made the candies but I have it in a jar. I do not have molds yet so we eat it on HOT toast or a spoon. Just heat it to 27 degrees over boiling and cool it in cold water outside the pan, then stir it for an hour.. yes an hour or so. It gets pretty thick and very opaque. Maybe I will rig up a thing over summer to do it better. To buy a cream unit is costs 1500 bucks but I know I can make it cheaper by doing it myself.

I have 5-6 trees on my property but the elderly neighbor with altimers has 3 monsters just 1 foot off my property line. I tapped those as I know nobody will yell at me. If they want to yell at me I will give them some syrup. I may give them some syrup anyways if the season permits.

I got hunting permission from an elderly woman up the road with 300 acres that is untapped. I am sure she would let me tap hers if I gave her syrup. But there is no way I can evaporate that as of now. My dad has 100 acres back home (4 hrs away) but of course I am not there and I have an old neighbor that I am GOOD friends with with 225 acres that would let me tap but of course, same story.
