We decided to do a little upgrading in our grain-truck department. We bought two 2003 Kenworth T-800's with C15 Cat's and 13 speed transmissions. Rated HP is 435. We bought them from Load Line who removed the sleepers and built/put the boxes on. Supposedly they are ready to be picked up today but it's snowing/lousy out so probably tomorrow.

My uncle bought one and I bought the other one.

Nice upgrade from a 1979 GMC 7000 with a gas engine of some sorts and a 1982 Ford 9000.

Nice purchase P-Man! Kenworth makes a good truck and with the 425HP Cat and 13 speed you shouldn't have any trouble getting in and out of the fields with them. The only thing I would question is if you are going to be over your legal axle weight with only having tandems in the back, or do you plan on adding a tag in front of the tandems?

Those will be a huge upgrade over your old Ford L9000!

I have the same question for you P-man why only have tandem, why not get a steerable pusher? How long of boxes do they have 20ft or 22ft?

We are working on upgrading as well. We picked up 3 International 4900s and 3 Ford LN8000s and we are going to try to get them to Loadline to have stretched put I think we're going to put some Reiten aluminum boxes on them if they can get the boxes to us in time.

As far as I know you cannot have a third tag on trucks here in Manitoba. I'm not sure what the weight splits are for the roads, I just know total truck weight cannot exceed 22,500 kg. (Just under 50,000 lbs)

We just figured out if we could add a third axle then we'd be able to haul about 250 more bushels in the truck than we can now. However unless it's a drive axle (Three drives) and it was built that way, you cannot have more than a tandem.

I should add that we have had a 1995 or 1996 Kenworth T-800 for probably close to 10 years now and it's been a great truck, which is why we bought these two. However our older one has a 3176 Cat in it with only about 350 hp and a 10-speed. It's definately got it's ass full when pulling our pup trailer. The new ones will drag the trailer with much less effort.

The boxes are 20' long by 8.5' wide. We ordered these in January from Loadline and are just getting them now. I cannot believe how many trucks those guys build and repair. It's always hectic.

It makes sense not to get the third axle if you can not license it for anymore weight. I'm not exactly sure on my numbers but I think with a third axle in ND you can legally haul 62K or somewhere in that neighborhood. I think our trucks will be light enough that we will only be running tandems as the 466's in the internationals are only putting out about 250hp and the 8.2s in the Fords will be putting out approximately 300.

ya you cant legally license a tag tandem truck in manitoba, saskatchewan or alberta. Btt hey P-man we did the upgrade last year and bought a Freightliner. Not sure about manitoba but here in sask you can request to get the weight bumped up to 24,500 as long as you tell them your driving on only primary roads. When we haul we are never hauling legal haha. Them tandems are so decieving. Load it right up and your damn near over 30 tonnes

Your Ford 8000's don't have the 3208 Cat in them do they? One of our neighbors has one of those and that engine has given him nothing but greif.

I dunno if we can get the weight bumped up, but around here we are mostly on non-primary roads. Mostly it's poor excuse for concrete that is so cracked it looks like a window that has had a stone thrown at it.

Our major downfall is on highway 201 over the red river, we have a bridge that is in terrible shape and they tried cutting it down to 16 tonne limit a couple of years ago. Lots of guys complained and we got it raised to 24 tonnes, so with a legally loaded tandem we can still cross. Half our farm is on the other side of the river so that would have been a major hassle. I think they are talking about building a new bridge, but talk has been going on for like 15 years or something.

I know at this time of year when the road restrictions come on, we can get a permit to haul 100% on the secondary roads. The road with the bridge is cut to 65% of normal axle weight, so our Ford 9000 used to be overweight when empty. One guy around here had an International truck that he had bought out east and was bringing it home, it didn't even have the box on it yet and the DOT pulled him over and gave him a ticket for being overweight.

He took it to court and they threw it away, but still. Now if you go get permits because there is no other option you can haul loaded trucks.

90+ percent of the time we are overloaded too. I was hauling beans home with the Ford a couple of weeks ago, drove on the scale and the truck was around 26,500 kg. That was with a pile of soybeans to the top of the hoops that keep the tarp from falling in. I never even moved the truck. I don't even want to know how much weight we put in them off the field when we load them right up with the combine...

The L8000s actually have the 8.2L Cummins in them. Right now they are sitting at 240hp but can and will be turned up to 300hp when the boxes go on them. We don't ever plan on making long hauls with these trucks, not that we couldn't but it's more efficient for us to hire semis to haul off the farm. We just don't have enough machinery or man power to justify buying semis to do this job, plus some of our fields are kind of a pita to get off of with semis as well as our bins in our yard.

The trucks that we have and are setting up for boxes are pretty darn light, they should be good farm trucks for around here the way we are going to have them set up.

that kinda sucks, i ran pretty much the same truck last summer with an 18 ton dump box and 2 drop axles. i could legally haul 63000 lbs and when dumping in pits they would let me get close to 70,000 before giving a ticket.

the hot shot farmers around here never load legal. they fill the truck by volume not wieght, just a matter of time before dot catches them.

Nice buy! We have a T600 and T800 kenworth semis and they have both been great. We also have 2 Ford 9000 tandems, one is a 350hp cummins and 400hp on the other. Both of those have also been good field trucks.

^^

I know, I'm pretty sure that 435 is lots, considering even pulling our pup trailer we're still only looking at about 1000 bushels of grain... Our 350 hp Kenworth T800 that we have now does it no problem, just takes some distance to get to top speed.

Plus more power = more fuel consumption. 90+ percent of the time the truck will not be pulling anything, just the 550 to 600 bushels you can put in the box...

That's funny P-Man,
Your toys look more like tools to me.
Really cool really big ones, but for work, none the less.

I guess they are tools and necessary for the job, but to me they are toys because we could have bought old pieces of junk for way less money to do the same job. Just more breakdowns and fixing.

Instead we got over-powered new stuff, I like it!

We picked them up yesterday and hauled the first loads with them today. Impressed me, empty they weigh about 9700 kg, which is almost 1000 kg less than our old Ford 9000 and about 500 kg less than our older Kenworth. The power is ridiculous and to my happiness they don't rock going down the road. Our neighbor has a T800 with the 8 bag air suspension and that thing feels like a boat, we used it last fall for an afternoon when one of our trucks broke down. These ones have a different rear suspension with a large C-shaped spring on the front part and an air bag on the back. Stays rock solid and quite smooth.

So far, I'm happy. The power on them is awesome compared to what I'm used to as well...
