I have been out of contract for quite a while and I still use an old Samsung 650 (about 5 years old). I am thinking of picking up a a Blackberry Curve. Does anyone know of any issues with these? I'm a little concerned about potential for screen damage.

I use Verizon and I'm more than happy with them.

It is fairly easy to crack the plastic over the screen. This plastic is replaceable though.
Otherwise, they are pretty solid. I've had a curve for over a year.

A couple of weeks ago I bought an HTC Touch Diamond phone, very similar to a Blackberry Storm.

Long story short, I re-activated my Samsung A920 yesterday and cancelled my new contract (30 day money-back, woo hoo!).

I won't say I won't EVER have another "smartphone" but it will be a long-ass time before it happens again. Their battery life sucks (Blackberries around here have the same problems as the HTC did), at most I saw 10 hours out of it. My ancient Samsung (3 years I think I've had it so far) still lasts 2 or 3 days with normal use, being a couple of calls and 20ish text messages a day.

I live in a very very lousy service area though, so my phone spends a lot of time searching for service. If I had better reception I think the smartphones along with the normal old phones would be more impressive.

Also when I got the HTC I was looking at a blackberry, I don't know how anyone can type on those things, the keyboards are so small...

Every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. That means every day you see me, that's the worst day of my life.

Doesn't help much if he has Verizon!

One of my buddies has had a Blackberry for a while now. He works in the oil field and surprisingly has not broken it yet. Then again, he doesn't use it much during work...he has a company phone for that. From what I've seen, as long as you aren't too wreckless with them, they seem to hold up.

Ahh yess that would be a problem then wouldnt it. Ive heard some good things about the blackberry curve i mean as long as you take care of it, it should be a good phone and should last!

Well as it turns out I am on an old plan and if I go to a smart phone my bill would be nearly 3 times what it is now. I'm not good with that so I'll either just upgrade to another standard phone or go with what I have. Thanks for all the input.

Oh i was going on the impression that you had a smart phone plan already. Personally after my plans up im goin back to a regular plan with a slide phone and just get the unlimited plan which is 65/month and includes unlimited texting, calling, and mobile web use which is just fine to me!

I pay roughly $90 to $100 a month after tax for my BlackBerry plan through Verizon. That's about the cheapest you can go with one. I paid about $45 before with my regular cellphone so it's about double. Well worth it, in my opinion.

I pay $54 (tax included) per month with Verizon. This is 1800 minutes shared on two phones (free verizon to verizon). If I were to upgrade, it would be roughly $150 per month for one smart phone and one regular phone. Plus both lines would be on another 2 year contract. I was hoping to upgrade and only have one phone under contract.

Not to mention if I were to upgrade, she will to and that could bring the bill to $200.

I have pitched my employer to upgrade my company phone to a smart phone. Hopefully that will work out.

me and the girlfriend both have blackberry's and shes had a few problems with her phone but both times they were replaced for free. the batteries get better with age believe it or not. i can go 3-4 days on mine without it needing a charge and thats with normal use of a few calls and alot of texting. i have sprint and the service is really good and cheap actually. unlimited everything such as data, texts nights and weekends.1500 anytime minutes bill comes to 121.77 a month for BOTH lines. 1 bill 2 phones. my old plan for 2 lines with at&t was almost 200 a month. i can even use my phone as a modem and connect to the internet with it with my plan. worth it in my opinion

I had the curve for 2 years with att and loved it. it was super strong i brought it every where with me.I dropped it in water twice one of which being a lake in about 6 feet of water. I have the blackberry bold now and it is even better than the curve. I would recommend the curve to anyone.

also about the battery life I average probably 50-100 texts a day maybe more and it would last me two days as long as I put it on sleep mode when I wasnt using it.

Damn...mine would be about the same. I was planning on getting a SmartPhone in November when my plan is up. Unfortunately, I am too frugal to pay double for my cellphone plan. SmartPhone isn't looking so great for me in the future.

My buddy with the BlackBerry I mentioned earlier had the same ordeal. He went from $60/month to $120/month or so with the BlackBerry.

It depends largely on how many voice minutes you use. I have 450 anytime minutes (unlimited off-peak and weekends) and I pay $40 a month base price for that. On top of that I opted for a $10 text package which gives me 500 text messages. Lots of my text messages are within the Verizon network so they are all free. Other than that you are required the $30 minimum BlackBerry data package and I also have insurance on my phone for $6 more a month...so yea, between $90 and $100. Of course there are dozens of other services and such you can add on. I've been very happy with my BlackBerries, love my Storm.

Sounds like you have the same base I do...$40/month plus $10 for texting. It's the $30 data package that kind of sucks. I haven't had insurance for the last couple years...but with an expensive phone like that, it'd be cheap security. We'll see what comes about in November I guess.
