Ok i need your guys opinion on my 580.
I have a 94 xlt sp 580 and i want to build it up this summer and i have some questions for yas.
#1 should i pipe it and what kind of pipes should i use, i want the high pitch cream so her.
#2 i want to ether add length to my track and give it that real aggressive look what rear skid should i use, I was thinkin of a 144 track so.
#3 i want to paint my hood and tunnel well ether paint or polish it, how hard is it to paint the hood and do i need any special paint?
#4 i want to put a different seat and tank on it the one pice tank/seat i don't like it i was thinkin something from a newer sled.
thank you guys and any input is greatly appreciate

.

I wouldn't pipe it, try to find a can for it instead.
For a suspension, either find a 144 RMK suspension xtra 10 or edge, or get an extra 10 or edge and extend it. I used the tracksusa 121-144 tip up extensions on mine. Not sure about painting the hood, maybe pull the decals and redecal with other graphics? I would strip and polish the tunnel. Or just strip it. Others have used the prox type or shorty type seats, I think you need the seat and tank to match.

Pipes are gonna be touchy unless you have the know how to rejet and such to keep her running tops all the time, and if your engine has alot of miles on it already, then piping it will shorten the life.IMO heres what I would do.Put a can on it if you want a different tone(im against cans, they close trails and annoy people),Get an xtra10 suspension and add 136 rail extensions, you can get a complete kit from tracksusa.com for around 600 bucks that includes the track,an 1.25 lug will be enuff in a ripsaw pattern, and follow JBSHOCKS mounting schematics.Switch the front to xtra10 also.Peel off all the decals except where it says XLT on the side of the hood, and polish the tunnel.Get plastic skis, and maybe a polaris racer seat and tank like on wedge XCRs,or you can goto a edge seat and tank combo which takes a lil modding to get it to fit where as xcr system will bolt right on.Then clutch it and jet it down a couple, madcow can help ya on those ask him.And install a pivot riser mabye 2-3inch (i have a system with cable extension 4sale),then install 5inch gauge package, flared windshield.WOW im sorry for all the suggestions. Its nice to customize someone elses sled when you dont have to pay for it lol
And then sell all the suspension parts, track, skis, seat and tank to get some money back on the mods youve done

I don't want to start anything by saying this, but the mono block triples don't always like the pipes, they can go boom! With a can you will get a different sound than stock, and no harm to the motor.

I was reading through this thread waiting to see if that was said. You're not starting anything, it's not opinion, it's fact... Piping an old XLT motor is almost 100% guarantee to blow it up, even with rejetting.

If you want different sound, go with a can, like he said.

95 - Storm 800 - Modded - AKA: FrankenStorm - Totalled near 100mph at Tug Hill!
96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...
95 - RXL -- Sale Pending --
05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

I would pipe if you know how to tune... and undstand the numbers, you dont have to worry about "BLOWING IT UP" i can tell these guys have not taken the time to understand how two strokes work and how aftermarket pipes work. you can jett accordingly to each cylinder i.e 230 210 220 assuming your engine's PTO side runs hot you have to fatten it up its not done over night. basically undstanding how an engine works inside and out and for every action theres a reaction and adjusting accordingly pretty much means you can do anything you want you just have to talk to the right people but if your going to do this during the summer your tuning will have to wait for the cold air to return.

Also proper clutching plays a huge role as well. keeping the RPM's in mind and the pipes Peak horsepower in relation to not over revving

why is it that they "blow up"? for you guys that qaurantee engine failure? where are your FACTS coming from? please i think this critical to make sure it is a reliable resource.

Hey this is exactly what I didn't want to start, not all of them blow up, it WAS my opinion, some just can't take the added stresses of the pipes. Mine blew, not because of jetting, the crank took a crap on me. If I were to buy another xlt/xcr triple I would not pipe it again. all my opinion, just trying to save the guy some headaches.

I triple piped my xlt clutched, geared and jetted it, ran good for one season next season nothing but problems ending up blowing the engine once got lucky and just needed a rebuild. Got it back on the trail took it the lake runs, i was going about 105-110mph center head starting loosing pressure that added pressure in the cooling system blew 2 of my coolant lines and seized my motor right up. Funny thing is ran perfect ZERO problems for 4 years until i put those pipes on. There nothing but headaches IMO. I would stick with a can and leave piping to the guys that have 23.9 hours a day to mess with them.

105-110 might as well been trying to blow it up.....pipes are designed to give your power band more grunt/pull not to try and redline it, and yes crank failure is a gimme at 8000+ rpm even for a triple did you fatten up your oil?? on your oil pump setting? or run alittle pre-mix knowing you working going to break the 100mph mark? this is all common mechanical knowledge

not to mention you said you changed your gearing this generally makes the engine work twice as hard even at trail speeds.

Have you looked at the suggested rpm range for a triple with pipes, generally near that 9000 range, and most of them are suppose to run 8500.

I dont think it will blow either,if he has tuning ability. But my concern was adding pipes on a high mileage engine without "freshining" it up might cause trouble early into the season.

And again, I wasn't saying that it will blow, just that it can finish off a motor, to me, not worth it. If you had a fresh motor, with the updates and the crank ready for it, by all means go for it, but a motor that has a few miles on it, no updates, I wouldn't take the chance. I think this would be a good poll topic, how many people popped there xlt/xcr motor after adding pipes.

First hand...It's not worth it.

I had my 96 spinning around 9k, first season the oiler cable came off, siezed her up. new crank and new piston and 3 sets of rings and away we went...season number two, put hi comp. heads on it, blew a piston a month later, put a new set of wiseco's in it, .040 over, shaved the cylinders, 400 miles later the pto end broke off my motor, i threw in the towl. I had the oiler hole drilled out for more oil to the pto bearing, it was a new crank too.

5 grand into that sled, i learned alot from her but it wasnt worth it. when it ran, it screamed...

of course you know your supposed go a couple thousandths over when using wiseco pistons
because there forged pistons right? so a .040 piston the bore would need to be .0415+ snogoer Just had an article on this, this season.....
