Thank U for the Welcome, nice, I had a cat f10 for 2 yrs & that blew up too. But, most all the sleds I,ve had over the past 30 yrs have done the same thing. Having an engine go down is a lot better then having the track roll off at 100. I had to use my spare 800 legend for the other 1000 this yr. Its hard to get back to a low slinger.

Thanks, I e mailed polaris a good one & a lot of the dealers have said they are going to come up with a fix (new motor, ecu, etc.) something about pistons to small from the vendor, but bottom end mint. Thing is Maine has one of the best Lemon laws around, with respect to the 3 time failure. Over 35 yrs riding I have had a lot of sleds. I,ve had a blast with all of them

I've been doing some research and testing. The fix to mine has been, (wait for it) an exhaust can. It fattened up the mid-range, which I learned, seems to be the problem. More problems have been showing up on the trails where you may be in the 5000-7000 rpm range, the fuel map is too lean here and causes irregular throttle response and even bogging. I put on an exhaust can and it brought the 09 800 to life for the first time. I don't know if all cans are equal, mine is from a sled shop in Revelstoke B.C. Canada. Only problem now is it is too loud. (XP riders says this when I come to help him get unstuck) ha ha just joking!!

There will be a fix. I really believe polaris will make this right. There was a new letter from polaris as of march 24th stating they will have good within 60 days. Currently they are testing a set up on the dyno and in sleds across the country at different elevations and so far it seems they may have the fix. Plus the are supposed to give another year warranty once they have the fix.

This was in a letter from polaris to their dealers.

Hopefully this will be the permanent fix. It seems to just be a mapping problem and possibly a piston problem.

if you ride in the trails at 30 to 50 mph the sled runs to lean and melts the piston and the can thing is true any one with a can has not blowen up around here and no crank problems yet

I've had a pc III with a richened mid range on the sled since it had 150 miles and i am now showing slight scoring. It isn't just the mapping, the new flash also advanced timing. I haven't gotten the new reflash yet because polaris is stating that another permanent fix is coming with in 60 days.

Bisshy, i know you work closely with this stuff, do you think this is something that will/can be fixed?

I believe this will be a legitimate solution. Some of the things that they will be doing is the stuff they should of done in the first place, such as double ring pistons and pistons that actually fit. I am not sure but I am thinking I either read it on a forum or from my dealer that they might be putting in a revised fuel injection system. Not a 100% on that part so don't quote me yet. In a way some of this is all our faults. We as consumers demand lower prices and as a result get lower quality. Take the pistons. They were made for years by elka. Polaris shopped around and that italian company outbid elka and now is partially half of the 800's problem to date. Lower prices can also attribute to missing grease fittings. I see this at where I work also. We make ductile iron castings for all the major import and domestic auto companies and also Cat and john deer. Hell one of our plants makes all the rotors for nascar. But every year we lose bids for jobs to Chinese iron mills or lessor companies in the states. And just about ever time we end up getting that work back for the simple fact that as cheap as they make it for, the quality just is not there. Call me crazy but I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a machine that I KNOW is gonna run like a champ and keep me on the trails for years. I was reading a post somewhere about cats new 800 with the higher output but abnormally high price tag. Gonna be honest when I say I don't know cats fit and finish on there sleds, But if it is of good quality, then they would of hammered my point down. Cheap prices and great quality don't always go together. This is all just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt I guess. Later everyone.

my buddy has the piston problem with his too. Why would polaris use cheap single wring pistons in new high hp sleds ? My 98 xc700 has the original pistons n wrings in her yet and the spedo says almost 11,000 not so easy miles on it. guess shows how cheap the factories are getting and selling for top dollar

because Polaris seems to be using cheaper products to make the most amt of money. Its like buying a 12oz steak and ended up with 10oz - youre not getting what you paid for. WL

They do it because an engineer said it could be done and some bean counter told the mucky mucks it would add profit. Anyone old enough to remember the Ford Pinto and the fire problems in rear end crashes? Ford made about a buck extra profit assembling the vehicle the way they did. Accountants figured the chances of a fire were small and felt it was worth the risk.

Like btoeps74 said, everyone wants to save a buck. I also work in the auto supply industry and have seen us lose business for pennies on the dollar.

In the long run, QUALITY pays for itself!

Hey Picman. They should let your company make the pistons for polaris. If you guy's are good enough to make pistons for Harley's, then should be able to make them for polaris. Also would save money in shipping seeing as it is closer for them to get there pistons from Wisconsin then from Italy. And even better help our local economy.
