Well I decided I couldn't just "settle" for my moms Impala...

It's a 1999 Saab 9-3 4dr SE 2.0 turbo 5spd heated front and rear seats, 116k miles

I bought it from this Vera auto sales in Maplewood (big russian guy). Anyways he usually gets cars with minor body damage and repairs them and resells them... This car had a low speed hit on the passenger front end and it pushed the bumper in (hence the black bumper) it did bang up the undercarriage some, but nothing major and it had a clean title. He was asking 3900 in his ad, We agreed upon 3400 and he would pay for the alignment.

So far I'm super happy with it. It's a joy to drive and there's not a similar car within 20 miles, which is something I like.

Yeah for now I'm planning on getting the appearance cleaned up by have the bumper painted, get clear corner blinkers and side blinkers. Then I'm planning on sway bars, and probably Eibach springs to lower the stance some. And eventually a NordicTune ECU which will bump the hp from 185 to 220.

Good choice, glad to see you finally were able to make a decision. I think you'll be happy with it and still don't think you would have ever been real satisfied with the Impala. I'd say, definitely get clear corners, lower it, and get that ECU tune! I really want to get rid of the reflectors in the headlights of my TTS (they look like crap) but it's a huge job to open up the headlights. Been thinking I might buy some European spec headlights which don't have them, but at about $1000 a light, it wouldn't be cheap. Maybe this summer. I hate them that much.

Enjoy your car and the uniqueness that comes along with it!

I know I know I've temporarily put my Cummins obsession on hold. It just wouldn't have been a sensible college vehicle... And I did look at Vdub TDI's but they're all still around the 5k range (in the newer style jetta)...

So we were doing the insurance shopping today and they quoted $866 ever 6 months, for full coverage with 500 deductable. Then we looked at adding onto my dads insurance which would've been $750, so then we switched the primary drivers so that I'm the primary driver of the impala and my mom is of the Saab and that dropped it some more then we went to 1000 deductable and now it's down to $647... And that is with me having a clean driving record...

And now we just decided to go with just liability and have me listed as primary driver of the saab. So that ends up being 547 a year. We figured being it's a 10 year old car and would only be worth 3500 anyways.

I did enjoy some of the reactions from the guys at school, they were like why would you have bought that? or Why didn't you get a GTP or something. I'd just tell them to look out in the parking lot, count how many grand prixs you see, now count how many Saabs. Or I'd just tell them you don't have to like it, but I enjoy it and could care less what you think.

Well I've had the car for almost 2 weeks now. I've put 1000 miles on it already, and I enjoy it more and more. I did run into a little quirk, it was dripping a small amount of coolant out onto the manifold, the Saab guys told me to retorque the head bolts so I just did that today and so far I haven't noticed any coolant loss. I also noticed that my intercooler is split open on the passenger side (from the previous crash I'm assuming), but my brother has an all aluminum intercooler that he was going to use for his cavalier so I we're going to fit that in there.

Also I've been making my list for mods... And with the intercooler swap I've decided to change a few things.

Nordictune stage 2 or 3 (undecided yet) which will go to either 240 hp or 260 hp
Clear blinkers and fender blinkers
Cold air intake
Forge twin piston BOV
Rear sway bar
Rear strut tower brace
Eibach Springs (possible)

That's the list thus far. I also will have the bumper painted and I'm going to strip the grill down and paint it the body color and then find some nice wire mesh to put behind it.

Glad to hear your having fun with the car. Let us know how you like it when you get it tuned

The price of mods can add up pretty fast but it does set your car apart and the ones you've listed are all very much worthwhile.

So the other day I was bored and I was reading up on a DIY Saab site on how to clear out your blinkers. Took me all of 15 minutes to do both blinkers. Then I also meshed my grille. They said to use gutter covering which cost like 3 bucks and just cut it down and fit it in. I'm pleased with it so far although I did lose my drivers side blinker on the way home the other day, the previous owner had lost the factory bolt so they just used a sheet rock screw to hold it in, and it flew out...

The intercooler waiting to be installed... that's a ruler on... It's like 3 inches thick and I'm hoping I'll be able to fit it in there.

Hey make sure you keep up on your oil changes. Not to bash your new ride (trust me I think it's pretty cool) but those engines are known to sludge up and ruin bearings and whatnot. I've never realled worked on Saabs but I heard something about the way the oil filter is set up or something that it allows the oil to sludge up easy. Look on ebay, there's usually 2 or 3 of them for sale with knocking/smoking engines. Just giving you a tip, hope you enjoy the car.

Yep I've been on the Saab forums and talked to Andrews Saab in Princeton and they've all warned me of the problem, but I've found a list of oils that I can run that should be less susceptible to sludge. The problem was on the 99's and later they routed the downpipe and cat closer to the oil pan which caused the oil to heat up more.

As for the intercooler, after asking guys on the forums they said it's possible to fit it, but it'd be more work than I would probably want. So I'm going to give that IC back to my brother and then order and FMIC one that's a little shorter, but the same dimensions otherwise for about 80 bucks.

Well guys I got my intercooler swapped in. It's really a whole new car I love it. Gets rubber in first and second and it puts you back in your seat the rest of the way to 100. But with the manual boost controller I'm hitting the fuel cutoff (15.5 psi) so I'm looking into buying a new ECU I'm just debating between a stage 3 or stage 4.

Stage 3 I don't really have to do anything else other than a high flow cat and exhaust and I'll be looking at 250-260 hp and 280 ft lbs

Stage 4 I'd be looking at 275-285 hp and 300 ft lbs, but I'd have to buy a TD04 turbo which on ebay I've found for around $250...

Yeah she was a little dirty... I just bought a spare ECU and I'm going to send it into a guy in Colorado who will tune it to anything I'd like for 200 bucks... But I have to do 3" exhaust before I can do that... Which I'll be looking at 280 engine horse... A guy from the area with the same tune said he can break them loose in 3rd gear doing 60 mph

That guy must do a lot of testing with them? If he's selling packages, he better be. Sounds like fun, and having the spare ECU will also allow you to switch back at will.

In the next couple of years, I'm looking at replacing the anemic 80HP motor in my rag-top TR7 with a nissan KA24DE-T.. 250HP turbo with 30MPG, on a stock 2.4liter engine, and a chipped ECU. That ought to liven up the car a bit, eh?

Well the T5 ECU (what I have) is very easy to tune if you have the right software. It's actually kinda crazy the kind of power you can pull out of this little 2.0 with just bolt on and plug in mods. If I stay out of the boost the best I have got was 31mpg, but with my normal driving habits I usually run around 25mpg.

Right now with my manual boost controller I can hold off my friends GTP from passing me...

I should be okay still, they say stage 5 is when you need to add bigger injectors, but stage 5 is running either an HX35 or 40, or a GT 2871-3071-3271.

Well if they're bought by the Swedish company that makes Koinegsegg (sp?) that'd be sweet, get back the the Swedish roots. I love the car though, and although there aren't many around there's a few in the area and we meet up sometimes and talk about our cars, their problems, our mods, and so on... It's much like the SnowmobileFanatic community only scaled down...
