My chevy 350 motor burns oil like a mother. should i replace the rings or the rings and the pistons? It has 187K miles on it. Also would anybody know how much it would cost to have the new rings put in or rings and pistons put in? I have all the parts. They just need to be put in. I also want the entire engine gaskets replaced. Does anybody know how much it would cost to do that? Like i said i have all the parts i need. They just need to be installed. If somebody that works as a mechanic or whatever could tell me how much it would all cost that would be great!

I'm having mine in my '89 done this summer. I priced out the labor to do it and it came to around $1000 to do it here at the local motor shop. I'm having the valves adjusted too.
How far can you drive it right now before you have to add oil?
'06 Fusion 700 0 miles just bought it

What year is the motor, i can't remember the name of the place right now, but if its older you can get a rebuild kit for like $175. When is it burning the oil, and how much, how far between adding say a quart?

It burns oil whenever i give it the gas. And it burns pretty bad. I would say i have to add a quart every 3 days. But i mean the truck only runs about 2 hours or so every day. it burns oil pretty bad
the truck is a 1990 chevy 1500 step side with 187k miles

You may need more than rings. I would guess a full rebuild, new bearings, overbore, rings, valves redone. Thats way to much oil!

Should have pulled the motor down before buying parts. Might need to be bored. I assume you didnt order oversized rings and bearings since you didnt mention having bought pistons for it. Crank might need to be ground also. Pull it down and figure out what it needs from there. Another option is to just buy a low mile used motor, might be alot cheaper.

Aight. Just found a 350 motor out of a 91 blazer. He said it was rebuilt with new gaskets all around and it had new rings put in. He said all of that was done about a year ago. He said the engine has 78k miles on it. He said it runs and everything. He said its mine for $350. Should i buy or no? Its just the outside of the engine is a little rusty.

Ya! Thats a steal...Besides you shouldn't really rebuild these like you can a sled motor (Throw a piston and rings in and go)!

depending on how much you want to spend and what shape the truck is in, you can find local shops and engine builds that sell short block or even long block for dirt cheap, atleast by me. Other wise find one out of a wecked truck. There is more that needs to be done then just changing the rings, if you can even get by with the stock bore still, new bearings, crank may need a cut, etc.

i say build you own so you know what you have. Sometines you can trust peoples words, but these days people can look you in the eyes and stab you in the back at the same time. im building a 350 for a friens 89 camaro so i we know what it has and we know it was done right. but this is just me.

I would buy the used one it will cost you much more than 350$ to fix the other one if you can't do the labor.. can you pull and put the trans on the used one if you buy it?

you can get an engine rebuild kit from napa pretty cheap ,small blocks are inexpensive to rebuild.Common prob on the high mileage smallblock is the oil returns in the heads get pluged and then it smokes and burns oil.You will need a good hone and prob a ridge reamer, with that many miles youre gonna wanna measure the bore, and check the clearance on the main and rod bearings and replace the timing chain also.IMO if the bore is excessive id search for a lower mileage engine to put in.Heres what i would do if i had to use the engine.
1-If the crank is to far out of specs,Turn the crank .010 on the rods and mains(BTW mark all the caps and make sure they go in the EXACT same spot and position on reassembly or you will run into probs)
2- get the block hot tanked, hone the cylinders and ream the ridge out at the top and cleanout the ring grooves on the pistons (make sure you follow the instructions cuz the rings only go on 1 way)
3-new oil pump (pack it full of vaseline to help prime it)
4-new timing chain (line up the dots per instructions)
5-disassemble the heads get um hot tanked and re-seat the valves(a lil valve grinding compound and a cordless drill) and put in new valve seals (umbrella type)
6-check the cam and lifters (replace if need be)
7-Clean all the areas for gasket contact
8- reassemble engine (theres a trick when taking off the heads and putting back together so you dont have to adjust the rockers,PM me and ill let ya know what it is)
9-use 10w-30 to lube the parts when putting everything back together
Im a lil tired but i think i covered most of the bases.
