Yea, my son started out singing in church and school choir, next it was school musical plays. In College he majored in music, first a BS music education, then a major in music performance. Now he is singing opera. He's currently in Washington D.C. performing under their young artist program. He's performed in Monte Carlo, Italy and China. He has already booked performances into 2010 in New York City. And all this after I sugested a career in civil Engineering. LOL. Talk about chasing your dreams.

I was senior band member of the year and marching band member of the year. Two different years. I did marching band, senior band, jazz band, pep band, you name it. Trumpet was my tool of choice. Man was it fun. I like to pick it up still today and whip out some tunes. I also played tennis (2nd singles) for a few years.
If anything, those things made me a better person. I learned alot.

yea i admit i over reacted. letting him do his thing and take it from there.
as far as polaris-man comment, how many kids do you have?
If none maybe you should recant your statement, if no child raising experience maybe you shouldn't pass judgement on me.
i was not trying to be a jag here just looking for advice and i got it, alot of good points made also, others i could have done without but thats what happens when you ask for advice on an open forum.
no hard feelings from me, just a big thanks for making me see it other ways, first kid out of 5 that wanted to join the choir so yea i freaked a little. thanks again guys

My step son, Aaron, was in choir throughout high school and he's about as normal as they come.
It didn't hurt him and certainly did not make him gay.
He's a good singer and he enjoys singing. Nothing more or less.
Now he's married and has a family of his own.
I look back on it and I can see where singing in the choir did help him to not be as shy in speaking with people, and it was something that he looked forward to in school every day, and kids do need that.

No hard feelings here either.
Every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. That means every day you see me, that's the worst day of my life.

Glad you decided to rethink your initial reaction. I was in band from grades 5-12 (drums being the noisemaker of choice) and choir from 9-12. I always loved band...pep-band and marching band more specifically. I did not care for choir in High School, but looking back at it, it wasn't bad. I don't regret either decision by any means. I still have my drum set in the basement to go laydown some beats on occassionally.

Whats wrong with your son being in choir? Most successful musicians started their singing career there.

Let him try it. I tried it in 6th grade and quit afer the first semester. Just cause he joins the choir doesn't mean that he will turn into a fag. Like I said, let him try it.

would you rather him hanging with druggies behind a dumpster or singing with good little church kids? im sure the choir is a better group to hang with
Bambi would have been a better and shorter movie if he was shot in the beginning with his mother
if a ride on lawn mower takes bumps better than your sled, its time to upgrade

I know he said he was all set with advice from people who aren't parents, but I was a child. My dad always had me helping him out in the garage(actually, I probably slowed him down asking all kinds of questions). I remember a picture of me and him studding his track back when I was maybe 10? I might not have been able to help much but thing is I got my hands a little dirty and enjoyed doing it. I also bugged him to take me hunting with him. He bought me a .410 shotgun to carry. I wasted a lot of his time hunting because I thought it was boring(until I shot my first deer, now I'm hooked). I would see a sqirrell and bug him about shooting it. Anyway if I were you I would take him with you and let him help you do grown-up stuff. Take him out in the woods for walks, show him what deer prints and different signs look like, and if he's slowing you down just remember that you probably did the same to your father back when you were a kid.

i didnt read all the previous posts so i dont know if anyone mentioned this but for your sons futures sake he should definetly be in one or both of band or choir doesnt matter which one. This is for when he is a senior and signing up for scholarships and list that he was in those because scholarship comitties love that. I wasnt in either and i know i missed out of some scholarships and such for not being in enough extra curricular activities. But overall i have got around 50,000 dollars which is enough to pay for my schooling at UND but that was mostly grade based. All i can say is have your kids in as many extracurriculars as possible no matter what they are. who said there is anything wrong with choir. I think daddys ego is too big for his son to be in choir but for 50K i think i could live with it, unless you want to flip that bill.

dude first off it is not an extra curricular ativity,it is a REQUIREMENT for him to take one of the 3 options. second off as i said he is taking music composition which is what we(wife/myself) originally wanted him to do. this way he learns all aspects of music which in my opinion would give him a better chance of success in the music industry than just the choir. third daddys ego had nothing to do with it when you become a parent you want your kids to be bigger and more successful than you thats why you try to lead him the right way. just because he didn't originally want to listen didn't mean i wasn't going to support him though, i don't recall saying that. if i have to flip a college bill oh well welcome to parenthood, we have been saving for all our childrens college funds since they where all babies if they don't go to college its their money to do whatever they want then. to me that don't sound like a "horrible" father
fourth would a mod please lock this thread i do believe we are all tired of seeing it pop back up over and over. points have been made and taken in. thanks again for everyones thoughts.
