I own a D8 with 1800 miles on it and its still running good when it's map issues aren't acting up... Have been feeling some hesitation when i get into the gas even after the reflash intermittently. When i feel the motor running out of the norm...i back off. My question is..... when the 800's are blowin up...... when does it happen?? Wide open throttle? High rpms? Cause a lean motor thats Wot or high rpms is gonna blow no matter how high quality or low quality the pistons are.... So is it cheap pistons or lean running engines thats causing these things to blow?? Any input would be great....thanks guys....pray for a fix!!!

It is a combination of cheap pistons and the map issues.

i've been told by numorous dealers that its the low octaine levels in the gas which is the start of the problem. i know it sounds silly but with the new addition of ethenal being added to our gas its makes the sled run totally different from when the motor was designed. it was design for gas only no with the addition of eathenol. so what they have been doing is putting thicker rings in the piston and decreasing the compression and that has seemed to taken care of the problem. im not saying thats why the cfi motors keep blowing up its just what i've been told be numorous dealers that there is something in the ethanol that is breaking down the motors if that helps you in any way with your question there is my guess

Good point, except you will get way to many people now that will say that ethanol has nothing to do with it, haha.

my sled blew with almost 1200 miles, my friend has a D8, but in the short track with probably close to 3000 on it and he hasnt had a problem. He however played around with the fuel mapping and i didnt. I dont know if you can lay all the blame on the new gas i mean if its been treated or you dont let it sit around to long there shouldnt be any problems. who knows, my sled is ready and i will be picking it up in the morning so we'll see what the problem is, seems to change every time i talk to them.

The lean condition is actucally in the midrange and not at wot. At wot, the sled is pretty rich but the 5000 to about 6500 rpm range is deadly lean which at this rpm range most of your cruising is done.
I've had a power commander III since the sled had around 150 miles and i was able to cover up the mid range and lean out the top end. It was an animal once the PC III was installed; however At 1066 miles my mag side piston is showing slight scoring.

From what i've read on snowest the midrange is lean and the top end is fat. If you run wide open (where it should be most of the time anyway ) you shouldn't have a problem. bad gas can be an impornant factor too.
As for reliability, if it has tits, tires or burns gas, you're going to run into problems.....sooner or later.
There's no replacement for displacement!

I blew my '00 XCR in the middle of the winter with midrange and I wasnt pushing it at full throttle - maybe 3/4 way and poofed. Smoked the middle cylinder piston. Piston wash on the other two, were great - no idea why the middle was first to go so I am assuming bad gas, low octane ethanol when it was supposed to be high octane. Who knows. I know a guy who fixes sleds, said to me that he has seen alot of blown up sleds dued to not high enough jettings and using ethanol. BTW, I did up size a jet in my sled at the start of season to avoid that problem. Im stumped. WL

Here in Minnesota we've been running 10 percent ethanol in our unleaded for 20 years now. We went through this leaner fuel thing at that time. We can still get non ethanol in the premium, so what I do is make sure I'm running non ethanol when its colder and if its mild I know its O.K. to run the E-10.

Quote originally posted by brian1983 any aftermarket setups available yet? nice wiseco set? big bore? Carls makes some really really nice big bores if you want to spend some coin. Wiseco is working on pistons, but no body has anything available yet for the 800 CFI. But they are working on it. Quote originally posted by 2strokes_are_awsome From what i've read on snowest the midrange is lean and the top end is fat. If you run wide open (where it should be most of the time anyway ) you shouldn't have a problem. bad gas can be an impornant factor too. The motor as stated is lean in the mid range, and rich on top end. But the lean midrange is not the only thing causing them to burn down. There are sleds that lean out when in a climb, with half a tank of gas or less, causing burn downs, there are motors going down from faulty ECUs, and there are more things, but the main problem is the lean midrange. If you want your motor to last, stay out of the midrange, but that will not keep your motor from scoring. After mine went the first time I really made sure so stay out of the midrange, turns out it blew at WOT 153 miles later. It could be that it got some damage before that, then when it was running WOT it couldn't hold up to the rpm because the damage was already done. I don't know. But it blew at WOT. So don't think that if you hold it WOT you will be ok. That is not the case. If your riding season is almost over, don't buy anything to try and fix the problems. Polaris says they are coming out with a fix for these motors, and are saying it will work. So just hold on and wait till the fix is released. Polaris says they will take care of all 800 owners.

Does anyone know if the 08 700 CFI's are having the same or similar problems as the 800's. 900 miles on my 700 switch and no engine problems yet. Just electrical problems. Had ECU, Stator and Voltage regulator replaced under waranty at about 650 miles.

Thanks for the input. I realize the thread is for 800's but just thought that the similarities in design and problems being encountered may cross over to the 700's.

Some of the 700 and 600 CFI's have experienced similar problems to the 800, like the hesitation when you get on the throttle, but as for the burn downs they haven't had any that do the same thing as the 8.
