My 93 Polaris xlt special 580 has plenty of power, but it doesn't seem to have any load on it, wide open throttle from dead stop engine will rev near 10,000 rpm and I let off to keep from blowing it up and hold it about 8,000 rpm it only does about 50 mph. Holding the throttle near 9,000 rpm it will go about 60 mph down the road, belt is good, sprockets are stock, I believe the secondary is off a 99 XCR, red spring last hole, primary has 10mr weights, really short white spring, no worn parts, buttons good. I have many more spring of all different kinds to try, I've read on other threads that 10 AL weights are better. I think it just doesn't shift fast enough. Clutch engages at 4,200 rpm. IDK, My brothers 400 indy will blow it away any day. Any help would be great.

Here's what you have to do. First chalk a line from the belt to outside of sheave on your primary clutch. Pry open your secondary clutch and chalk the sheve also. Take it out for a high speed run. Check you sheaves to see how much chalk has been rubbed off. This way you'll know which clutch or both need to get fixed.

Make sure you clutches are clean. When you say last hole, do you mean tightest? I would think an XLT would need a softer secondary spring than an XCR. Try a different hole. You are definately not shifting out if you can over rev.

I would try to pick up a clutch kit or search this forum for a good setup. I had a white spring in my ultra primary and it performed okay, but I am not sure how you will do with an XLT. Also, if you have a helix from an XCR, that may be too steep for the XLT.

You could try a PM to madcow. I am sure he could get you going in the right direction. He has received many good reviews on this forum.

Secondary is set on loosest hole, and primary clutch had 1/4 inch on the outside edge not rubbed by belt.
I think secondary isn't the problem,

Your Primary is close with only a 1/4" of chalk left. Sometimes belts look good but they are worn narrow, measure yours to a new one. If yours is an 1/8", get a new on and keep it for a spare. It almost has to be your secondary, try switching secondary clutches with your brothers 400. If it works better, get new buttons, a T1 Helix and a Polaris silver secondary spring for your secondary.

This is my second secondary clutch, the first was fubar, helix maybe good but the rest is junk. Thinking of taking off hood and ride it to see what clutches are doing. But we don't have any snow here in SE Iowa. Should just sell both my sleds and buy an newer edge 600 at haydays. IDK

Ya, you can't find a whole lot os snow here in Northern Minnesota, mostly shaded areas. I've been able to find good secondary's on e-bay for under $50. shipped.
