206,000km on it, runs great, had a cat efficiency low code in about Oct, re-set it and it never came back on, at the same time the downstream O2 sensor voltage low code was up. I haven't changed anything, figured at least 1 code would come back and that would point me to the problem. I'm getting about 13mpg, 18km/100km. I did a trip up to camp, got 13mpg cruising at about 60mph. The following week in the city I was getting 14mpg, and I have a heavy foot. It has the 4.8 engine, with a K&N cold air intake, which has been cleaned. Any ideas?

EDIT: No check engine light, but code P0496 comes on, Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow, what could this be?

Could it maybe be that your cat is plugged? Does it have a loss of power at all?

Thats not that bad of fuel mileage, I have a 08 1500 with a 5.3 with the multi-bs that is suppose to shutdown to get better, but the best I get on the highway is 17.5 and 14 in the city, and its suppose to be 17 city and 20 highway.

It doens't seem like it's plugged, and another thing, it seems like it wont set the evap system monitor, before this last code the light was still flashing. How can I check the cats without an emissions tester? I used to get 700km per tank easy, now I get about 450.

the only way you can check them is to pull them off if you dont have a tester. But I know your milage will drop though, I had a bronco and I took a condensor off after the cats and lost 50% of my mileage. I know alot of people will take the cats off and knock the guts out of them and put em back on cause their so expense to replace. Thats kind of a hard one to diagnose.

You might just need to replace your O2 sensor as its giving your engine a bad reading, think they say to replace them every 70,000miles or so.

Well focusing on the current code you have I looked it up and found this to be a good read
http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/caf...ic=88017.0

I can't read all the pages there because my computer is being a bitch. Have you searched fullsizechevy.com ?

Also you said you have a heavy foot? That doesn't help figuring it out. I have close to the same truck as you and get 15.5 almost every tank.. and 19 mpg on the expressway

I didn't find that one, thanks, and fulsizedchevy says about the same. I think it could be the gas cap for that one, I made sure it was on right, I'll see if it comes back. I dont mine 14mpg in the city as I am hard on it, it's the 13 on the highway that drives me nuts. Also RMK I think you might be right, but there $190 each and I dont want to change them unless I know forsure. I think there still the originals to, and the upstreams are even more money.

Well this might sound dumb. But When I started to have problems with the cats on my truck "2000 chevy 2500 6.0" The exhaust smelt almost like rotton eggs or had a sulfur smell to it. Also I could hear a weird detonation sound in my cats.
Also I have heard of bad 02 sensors causing that same problem that you have.
I have had to change my gas cap on my truck before because it threw a code. I dont remember what the code was. But I was told you have to make sure the gas cap seals tight because its a pressurized fuel system.

Ya, it's a pressurized system, I dont really like that idea. I've been playing with it a little, and it seems ok now, theres no funny smell, I ran a couple tanks of injector cleaner through it, and cleaned up the O2 sensors, seems ok now, being very hard on it I got 380km on 1/2 tank. Should be a lot better on the highway to.

try removing the air tube and cleaning the throttle body, check for a vacuum leak. those evap codes are usually a small vac leak somewhere, or a bad gas cap. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed. For a full-size V8 with 200k 13mpg doesn't sound that bad. If it hasn't been tuned in a while, you'd be amazed at what a fuel filter, pcv valve and a set of plugs will do.

I did the throttle body when I cleaned the air filter about 2 months ago, I guess it might be time to start testing for vacuum leaks like you said. Fuel filter was done about a year ago, I have one in the garage, but there such a pain to get off sometimes. It seems like it's doing much better now tho, hopefully it stays that way.
