Hey all.

I'm tuning 16 in a few days, and will be looking for a job. I know that it makes a difference where i am in the world and the opportunities there are here. but do you guys have any good suggestions for a first job? I could also use some good advice too.

Thanks!

Anything that pays, i worked in a restaurant for 4 1/2 years and started as a dishwasher and left as the guy that ran everything in the kitchen.

Since then i have gotten a job in a hardware store that is 100 times better.

But you do what you have to do to make money, all there is to it.

I just started as a dishwasher at a local restaraunt in november, and hope to, like srx_600, become a cook soon. I would go anywhere that you can get decent hours but don't have to commit your whole life too. just my .02

When you apply/interview for jobs, make sure your dress nice. (no t shirts, jeans) Most will decide yes/ no on there first impression, in the first minute.

Make sure you show up on time, be ready to work, stay off the damn phone.

Also a good attitude, dont whine about doing your job.

Jobs are getting harder and harder to find. ..I Have heard from many people, that company's are "cleaning house" getting rid of people that dont show up on time,or at all. miss to much work, or are not willing to work when they are there.

There plenty of people willing to take there place.

Good Luck

I started out as a farm hand and when i turned 15 got a job at Mcdonalds. When I got hired my boss said a big thing was the eye contact during the interview and attitude. Always maintain eye contact and try and show your not nervous. I was making 7.45$ an hour at first now allmost 3 years later I've moved up in jobs and am doing contract work with the city of Calgary making 22.00 bucks an hour workin 72 hour weeks. When you do get a job, do not be a dog plugger, take initiative..

Retail or service job
get used to dealing with people(a-holes, dbags, idiots etc.) right away
otherwise you will never find enjoyment in your other jobs

I suggest a Best Buy if possible, I know that they are getting more labor hours all around (I work there)
Its a ****ty job, but it pays about $8.00 starting, at about 3 months you'll be making $8.50
I started at $9.00 an hour, now I make $9.37 ..

I suggest working in media, mobile, or warehouse

P.S. During your interview, do not slouch...Lean forward, hands in your lap not pockets or crossed - Be confident, not cocky. (I am comfortable around people and with my product knowledge... versus I'm good at stuff and I'm not scared of people)
Lie your ass off if you take a personality eval. Pretend you are a church loving mormon boy or you'll never pass. List a lot of clean activities during your interview.. (I like to work out, ride bikes, help out in my neighborhood, get involved at school) and you're a sure shot...

Right before your interview: SMALL TALK!! Always!
Interviewer: Hi, follow me we'll get started
you: Excellent, what do you think of this weather
Interviewer: oh its great blah blah blah blah
you: yeah I can't wait to finally get outside and start running again/playing sport/swimming etc.
Interviewer: oh what sports do you play??
blah blah blah.

It seems minute but I feel it is important

Epic.

Go to school for a trade if you can. I went to a community college for welding and it pays really well. Ive also been in and around construction my whole life and if you work hard and keep your ears open to learn a thing or two, you will make it good.

Three things. Look sharp, work hard, and have a good firm handshake.

Good Luck!

My first job was being a lifeguard at the community pool. It initially costs you money to get the training. However, then you have a job where if there aren't swimmers you can get your homework done and that even when you go off to college its not too hard to find a lifeguarding job at some random YMCA either.

I liked it because I learned all the first aid and CPR skills which are always helpful later on.

During the interview for my current job it turned out that me and my boss have a lot in common with golfing and sports and the assitant manager rides sleds and also golfs. After the interview we sat and made small talk for about a 45 minutes and i think that really helped to put me over the edge and get the job.

this was my job order,

subway
hardware store
gun range

and im thinking the hardware store was my favorite. if your good with tools and know alot about fixing stuff around the home, apply at a hardware store, they love hiring younger people, at least the ones around me do. and you learn ALOT about all sort of different things.

A great first job is working in a grocery store. Stocking shelves, bagging groceries and so on. It is not the most exciting work, but you get to work with others your age.

Grocery Stores are always a great place to start out at. I started out bagging for a month or so and then got transferred to the produce department which was awesome compared to bagging. But I did learn how to properly bag groceries and now I get angry when I see people putting the wrong stuff in bags. Like wash soap with fruits, big pet peeve.

One thing to remember is that THEY don't need YOU. There are plenty of people looking to do the job you want so the employer has "pick ot the litter" when it comes to filling the position. You have to show that you are the best for the job.

Show up 5 minutes early and be ready to work when your shift starts. Showing up when the shift starts isn't good.

Be proffesional regardless of the job.

Do your best, even if you aren't sure of how to do the entire job.

Don't wait to be told what to do, try to stay one step ahead.

Never be caught standing around when you know there is work to do. Always be moving.

Watch your language.

Be energetic and supportive of other workers. Be a leader.

Employers are looking for employees that stand out in a crowd. They will hang on to a good worker when things get slim.
