Hey everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted anything about my '85 Indy 400. Well, today it went buh-bye. I traded that and $100 to a guy for a running '89 Jag AFS 440. Both have bad seats, neither has great tracks, but, the indy was having problems with the PTO piston and had almost no compression on that side. So what do you guys think? The jag's got 5100 miles on it, the Indy had almost 8000. I think I got a pretty good deal, the Jag looks like it's been kept inside most of it's life. All the Jag really needs to be snow-worthy is a seat cover, a track tighten, and a windshield. I'll get pics ASAP!

Should have looked around and got a 87'-90' 488, things are god damn bullet proof

I'm at 12,889, about 500 with a 144" track and not even a hick-up.

in trails are fan cooled. Both 488 fuji piston port motors (fan or liquid) are about as reliable as they come. Also, the 400 fuji is also extremely reliable as well. If your happy with the upgrade thats all that matters.

The Indy wasn't what I'd call a basketcase, but it was beyond my expertise of repair. The Jag had it's engine rebuilt about 500 miles ago (crank trued, new seals, pistons and rings) and runs like a top. It's unbelievable how much lighter that AFS is over the Indy. I'm not doubting the fuji twins reliability...but we've got 4 cat 440s in the family now and one have 9800 miles on it without a problem. I also know my way around that motor better. The sled will only be used as an extra anyway, so it doesn't have to be perfect, just go when you pull the cord.

Uploaded some pictures tonite...here they are. It's missing the front limiter straps in the skid, could this be causing my track to be excessively loose?

Decent sled. I had a 79 jag and 92 jag. Hands down the most reliable motor I have ever seen

Yup, I agree. Dad's got a '93 and a '97 Jag 440 and both have been bulletproof.

Hey, single carb....at least it'll be easier to tune in....unlike three!!
A little TLC, it should be pretty nice...wash, wax, etc...looks pretty dusty.

Yup...and they seem to be fuel misers with only one carb...sure they don't have much power, but they make a great trail rider!

Yup, it needs a seat cover, and a good bath. It's got probably 5 years of dust that was never washed off at the beginning of the season and got wet so it's like a dried dust-mud on it...nothing a good scrubbing won't take care of.

Hopefully I can figure out the track tension, I'm not sure if the limiter straps being completely gone have anything to do with track tension, but it's FLOPPY.

I don't think the limiter strap has anything to do with track tension...sitting on the ground. I would put one on and then re-adjust the tension. When in the air, the strap holds the front of the suspension from dropping too far. That could be where you are getting the "sloppy" track.

That could be...I've got the back of the tunnel up on the endgate of my pickup so it'll fit into my garage, but I didn't notice much for problems when it was on the ground. I'll have to see whats good tonite. My only other idea is that someone replaced the 116" track with a 121"

Props to XLT96Rider...it is indeed the limiter strap! I'm either going to cut down a tiestrap and ghetto rig it in there or fork over the $$ and put a new one in...but that solves my sloppy track problem. Now all it needs is some fuel line, a windshield and some skags and it's ready to rock.
