Any of you get into this stuff?
 front cylinder
Out of my 8 valves, 1 is out of spec, 5 are at the bottom of the spec (tight), 2 are .001 above bottom of spec so OK.
To be safe, I am adjusting them all. I ordered a shim kit today (not fricken cheap!). Not an easy job IMO.

I should check the valves on my quad just to be safe. From what I've seen, it is a hell of a lot easier than what you got yourself into!

Oh man on my gtr-1000 it was hell trying to get the valve cover out. I dont know if you had that much room either? Mine was a straight 4cyl though. Yeah quinlan quads are pretty easy just make sure to keep your timing chain tight and dont let it slip a tooth in the case, or else your in for a whole different world of trouble!!

I could get another 8 hp or so but it also loses almost 10 mpg from what I read. No thanks. It has plenty of power already. Here is a how-to that was made from another SV to show you how much more I have to do. http://www.bluepoof.com/motorcycles/howt...vs_valves/I have to do this every 15,000 miles. I refuse to pay a shop. I like to learn as much as I can about anything even if it costs me money and time. Getting the tensioners out and in is going to be a bitch. I am waiting for the warm up of this weekend to get back on it.. and my parts to come in. I ordered this shim kit to get them all to the middle of the spec where I want them http://street.parts-unlimited.com/5/223/7999894Shim under bucket design = huge pain in the ass. Both cylinders are just going to suck.

Got that rear tensioner off. Can't see it and it is way up in there. Little patience and I got it without removing the rear part of the exhaust and foot peg like people say to do. Got the gas tank off it now too. Wait till you see the pictures tommorrow, doesn't look much like a motorcycle at the moment. No radiator, tank, heads, seats, and soon no cams. EMTP579 from the forum stopped in my driveway on his bike as I was beginning to work on it. He walked in and said "WTF have you gotten yourself into now?"

ACM, I know what it is like to tear down a bike...
Thats why I ride something that doesn't need valve adjustments
It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!

^ I misunderstood. I am not on stuntlife. I am not into squid stuff. It is in your profile. This is becoming NOT fun yes, that is the chain out of the sprocket you are seeing. It jumped the tooth so now it is out of timing. Should get interesting. A 5 mm socket head cap screw is also stripped in there. Wonderful

Sounds like tons of fun. Are there any marks on the cams to help or are you going to have to pull the thing apart and set it.

There are a TON of marks on the cams. I think I have a guy coming over tomorrow who has done it before.

^ Yep. I purchased that light last year and put it on the bike. Looked like crap IMO. It also is not DOT approved. Many people online complain about the very poor amount of light coming out of it. The round light is a standard look of a Vtwin but regardless of the look, it is super functional bright as hell.
I ride the wheels off this bike weather it be 25 degrees and I am on my way to work or it is a 1,000 mile adventure ride. Functionality is my top priority. If I do anything, I will do dual front headlights from a buell that look nice and are DOT. But doing that make it hard to keep the stock headlight and tack so I am not tackling that any time soon. I have enough $$ and time into modding this thing at the moment. I do have a hugger to paint and install but I need to get other things done first.

I read that you can buy the shims individually? the PDF manual goes over shimming them pretty well. Rip it apart, measure it, buy the individual shims you need, put back together.

^ Yeah if you have a good dealer. Most dealers I have read charge 5-10 dollars each with exchange of yours. I am shimming all 8 of them so I just purchased an entire kit from hot cams. They are 90 bucks.
I have the PDF manual here. It leaves out a bunch of information such as what to do if the chain slips off the cams, and I don't see it mention the front tensioner. At the moment I got the pesky stripped bolt out (thank you craftsman extractor!). But then the chain slipped off one of the front cams. So now both cylinders are out of timing. I need an extra set of hands here to hold the chain and cams while I rotate the engine. I summoned for help on the SV forum and a local said he might show up today to lend me a hand.

By god I think I might have got it. I still am waiting for a gasket and bolt from the dealer so it will not be done till mid/end week. Can't put the tensioners back in. I need to make a special tool for that too.
Call me anal but I like to make sure stuff is right and kept track of
