As some of you may have seen, I was having a problem with a "ticking" sound from the motor last fall..

Quote bigdaddyhemi
Hey just my 2 cents. I had the same problem a couple of years ago. Bought a 600 with new pistons & rings installed and it ran like a champ other than a knock and a tick. I ran 600 miles and I couldn't take the noise any more. I tore it apart and could not see anything wrong. I checked for play in the wrist pin on the down stroke. Taped the piston with a soft mallet and found the piston dropped around a millimeter. I pulled the wrist pins and replaced the bearings. Put it back together and fired it up. No more noise and the guy that bought the sled is still running strong.

That's what it turned out to be... got it right!!
There was .001 play in them!! Didn't think that would make so much noise!!!

Now the questions.....since it's apart:

1.Shaving the heads - I could go .010-015...is it worth doing this?...I can get it done for free. I've heard if you shave heads, you lose rpm's. Any truth to this?

2.Polishing the ports (all of them). What would I really gain by doing this? I can also get this done for practically nothing. Noticeable difference or not? I've ported the heads on car motors and noticed a difference, would these be the same?

3.Pattern on pistons....How do my pistons look? Just put them in last fall and have about 1100-1200 miles on them.

Anything else I can do right now to gain a little power? (not looking for alot, just a little more than stock).

Picture is kind of dark but it looks like the PTO side cylinder was running rich.

I wouldn't say rich on the pto side, if it was rich it should be cleaner from the fuel washing the piston top.

Fuel lean on PTO as Drew said. Looks like Castrol mineral oil.

Always change wrist pin and bearing with new top end. Did you check bore size when you installed new pistons last year? Look thru exhaust port and see if pto has blow-by. Blow-by is discoloration below bottom ring.

IMO, shaving head with today's fuel is recipe for a bomb. Clutching is safe and more efficient.

Instead of 2 dollars, how 'bout 20??

Smart A$$!!!!

Coloration under the rings look good. Cylinders were bored to match the pistons, so they should be O.K.

That's what I was wondering...maybe it's safer to leave them alone.
Went through the ports(just smoothed them out).

IF the head gaskets are what I think they are you can peel off on of the thinner layers instead of shaving your head and leave the jetting as is. An slp head would be way better than the stocker IMHO. Good luck with it. Install SLP triple pipes if that doo-head is still talking chit to you, jet it, clutch it and blow his azz down.

It's all ok, that doo-head is a buddy - he's just giving me crap - like all of them.

I was going to put triple pipes on, but they are getting VERY strict on noise around here.
Will the head gasket still seal ok if pealed apart like that??

This past season I was having clutch problems, and didn't find out what it was until about two weeks ago.. That WILL be fixed for next season though!!! And I'm not going to tell them what I'm going to do!!!

I believe here was an optional thin head gasket from Polaris, required high octane at the time. Still though, gas blows today and it is not what it was when your engine was built.

my 2 cents.

I'm thinking with the crappy gas that's out there, it would probably be best to leave the heads alone. Gas stations are far and few that have actual "gas" yet. And that's all I run is high octane...

I'll have to check into that....I found a used XCR at a lot with those on it, but the dealer was an a$$ and wouldn't let me hear them.
