My fiance's 99 JAG 340 is in need of a new paint job on the hood. It looks like the paint is peeling but it is actually the factory clear coat. It must have been left out uncovered in the hot sun for a while by the previous owner. It was like that when i bought it last fall. I was thinking about removing all the decals and sanding it down and repainting it.

Has anyone done this before and what type of paint and preparation did you do and use? I have never painted plastic or fiberglass before. I'm not sure what the hood is made of.

Thanks.

Remove all the decals and use a wax and grease remover to get all glue residue off. Sand with 600 grit wet. Just don't go through the factory paint if you can help it. Use a good quality primer. Sand again with 600 wet. Paint. I would probably use a flexible additive in the paint so it doesn't crack so easy. Clear.

what kind of primer and paint would be good? I'm looking for just black.

XLT96riders mostly correct, depends on how nice of a job you want in the end. If your looking for a quick job use a finer grit like 600 to sand the hood, if the clear is peeling your going to have to atleast sand through the clear, if its peeling in one spot its going to peel in another. Give it a good couple coats of primer, sand it with about 600 grit. If your going to go this route I would use enamel such as Dupont to paint it, make sure and use hardener in the paint, this will make it alot more durable and cure alot quicker. As far as primer, a 2 part primer would be best, but if you can get ahold of some lacquer primer that would work, just dont spray it on too heavy and let it flash good between coats, then let it sit a few days before sanding it. Primer is for filling scratches, and the problem with lacquer primer is that if you sand it too soon and it hasnt been cured, you will sand it and later on it will shrink and the sand scratches will show through.

well if it is just the clear coat all you really have to do is clean off all the grease and take some very fine steel whool to the pant an that will take away any haze an also smooth out any inperfections. then all u need to do is spray some good clear paint on it an do that for a few coats an you are all set.
