i am getting a 1995 mercury grand marquis. it was my great uncles, and it has 200,000 miles on it. it has a 4.6 liter V8 so im not complaining. i wouldn't be even if it was a 2 liter since its for free. im planning on putting some money into it. i know that everyone is going to think this is a dumb idea since it has 200,000 miles, but im 15, its not like i have bills. and it'll be a learning experience. well what i want to do is this:

1. KN filter
2. make dual exhaust
3. get new mufflers
4. somehow get a tach.

ok so here are the problems. dual exhaust, most likely expensive. but i found this but this seems really cheap. http://www2.partstrain.com/store/index.p...3499&Nty=1

get new mufflers shouldn't be hard, but the sound im looking for is sort of a deep sound, sort of muscle-y. my friends are into that cheap rices jap sound, so i wanna show them up once i can legally drive, and i want to do it at least sounding like American muscle. what would give me that sound? i was thinking maybe one of those Dynomax glass pack mufflers?

i have no idea how i would get a tach.

last question, do you think this car would be able to beat out a i think it is a 1997 jetta 2.8 liter 5 speed?

Bambi would have been a better and shorter movie if he was shot in the beginning with his mother

If i were you i would not put a tach on that thing, waste of money IMO. Everything else would be alright for you.

I remember when i got my first car, i had big plans to do all this stuff to it. I ended up spending my money on other things and i am glad i did. Which is what i think you should do, just by .02 though.

I know you don't want to hear it but be smarter than your friends and use your money on something much better than that car. That car will get you from A to B. It will never make you look cool except in the eyes of those who do not have a car.

I put a lot of money into a crap car once. Listen to me on this, I know what I am talking about

Ha! I like the Heartbeat light covers, ACM.

As said before, putting money into a car (other than most classics) is a dead end investment. You'll never be able to argue that "I put X amount of money into this, so I should get X amount over the true value"

The part you linked is just for the crossover pipe. No mufflers, tailpipe, etc.

I put well over $1000 into my last Jeep, and it didn't get me anywhere when I resold it. This one I've just changed the oil and done routine maintenance. Still works the same as my last one. Plus, I have a sled now to dump money into...

Yeah, you got it for free. Buy a nice CD player for some tunes and leave it at that. When you get a little older and want to upgrade, maybe that 500 or so dollars you didn't spend will help you in the next purchase.

Oh, and dude, you got a boat of a car. I believe the 2.8 VW engine is the VR6, no? They're fast...it would probably spank you, especially with a 5 speed. No offense to the Marquis, but they weren't exactly geared to be racers.

The 4.6 is a good motor-when it's in a car. But with 200,000 miles, I wouldn't push it. The K&N filter isn't too bad of an idea, but how about just taking the silencer out of the air box?? It does help some.
For the exhaust, what about just leaving it a single out and replacing the stock muffler with a Flowmaster or something? I'm guessing you just want a little rumble??

As Kingprat said, maybe a better radio.

Not to discourage you or anything, it may not be worth it to stick a lot of money into a daily driver that's already 14 years old. If you want to stick money into something, how about picking up an old street rod or something like that?

I've done the same thing when I was younger, and kind of regret it now...that money would've come in real handy for other things.

Just trying to help,,,,think about it for a while(couple weeks) before doing anything and then see if you really want to yet.

What ever you do, I would not put glass packs or dynomax mufflers. anything i have heard them on makes it sound like a harley when driving. Go to youtube and look it up there are ones with exhaust.
I'd keep the money in my pocket.

The only mod I have on my first car is a round hole in the air box to give it a throaty sound :D
Its a 96 buick regal, 3.1... and my car is slow, it beats honda civics with fart cannons on it, but thats it. It sounds cool, and it turns heads when I get on it.. Thats the enjoyment I get out of my car

Don't upgrade a grand marquis
In fact, don't even slam on the gas in that car
you will regret it sorely.

Make it last

Edit: the jetta will whoop that cars ass.. hands down. Not a powerful car by any means but for its weight it scoots...

Epic.

it is a VR6 your right. it doesn't seem to have much torque though.

why did they use crown vic's as cop cars then, weren't they basically they same thing? also, i like that the car is a boat. im not going to be driving on a commute or anything so gas isn't that big of a deal, and beside boats make me feel safer than those little corollas.

Crown Vics were geared differently and the police interceptor models had different engine specifications. They last forever because they're built to last forever. They're fast because they're set up to be fast.

And yes you will be much safer in that car.

The VR6 might seem like it doesn't have a lot of torque, but they're deceptively fast. I had a couple friends in HS with VR6 VW's and they flew without much done to them.

i got a 1979 marquies with a 351 and i thought it would have power for being a 5.8 liter but i guess the wieght of the huge beast kinda offsets that.. at only 8mpg city i'm just looking how to get this thing more fuel effiecient rather than power.. but thats probably because i don't have a lot of extra money to spend on pointless stuff for a tank.. :P

The older grand marquis has very high gears in them, making them absolute dogs 0-60mph.It most likely has 2:73s in it now,put some 3:55 gears in it and it will wake up and probley get better mileage.
The 95 4.6 has 190Hp at 4200 RPM.

Current Line Up
-09 RMK Assault
-06 IQ R 600HO
-01 ProX 600
-95 XCR 600

Days get shorter, snow gets deeper, life gets better.

I would go with the Flowmaster - a little more $$, but worth it in my opinion.

As stated, the squads were built for that...they also had a better cam in them. You could change the gearing, but you'll have to change the speedo gear also. The run of the mill Vics are not speed demons, they're luxury cars.

well now a new problem. i need to jump the car. my moms stupid minivan [worst POS ever] the battery is completely covered and mounted on its side. on my dads 93, regal custom, there is a windshield washer fluid tank over the battery. they don't like making things easy. there is a plug coming up from the battery on the regal for a the positive plug but not the negative. what do i do. i can reach both negative, and positive on the marquis but only positive on the regal.

EDIT: never mind, i looked it upon Google. last time i looked i guess i just didn't word it good enough
