Hi all, I know the forum has been a bit slow around here as of late. So I figured we could get into a discussion on what you think the most important things are when looking to purchase a sled. Here are a few things that come to mind,
1. Dealer - Buy a particular brand of sled because you like the dealer associated with it?
2. CC displacment of the sled?
3. 100% brand loyal?
4. Good past experience with a brand? (Lets here it!)
5. Long track v.s Short track requirements?
6. Would you purchase the same model of sled again in a newer year?
Ok, lets here it. . . BTW we can also include after market accessories if you feel that makes your machine what it is!

Mileage and any other details about it's condition. What people have said about that model sled. Any work done to the engine/mods.
That's besides what you already mentioned.

#1 What the word is on any specific sled. What do the different mags' have to say about it and word of mouth.
#2 The Dealer. A dealer could make me flip brands if he really stands behind a product and looks at me as long term customer!, not just some slick salesman pushing sleds out his front door.
#3 Price I have got 3 machines new off the showroom floor, but I don't know if I will again. I think I would rather let someone else assume the initial hit now and get a machine 1-3 years old.

-brand loyalty (i would buy anything other than a polaris, unless it was an OUTRAGOUSLY CRAZY DEAL, like half of what the sled sells for)
-shop around ALOT, check the price range on the sled(s) you are interested.(look all over you city/state/province, see what the average price range on the sled model is)
-condition (even if it has high milage, it could be in showroom condition)
-milage (although, the milage doesnt really make that big of a difference most of the time, as it could be like 1000 miles old, but it could have been beaten and not looked after those 1000 miles, compared to the sled with 8000 miles of maticulas maintenance & easy, old-man trail riding, when the motor never sees over 60 MPH)
-modifications done to sled (if it has $x worth of parts installed on it, it would be worth a bit more)
-I never go to a dealer for anything but the odd parts, so dealers have no part in a purchase for me.
-I would never buy new, they sell 2009's right now for $3000+ less than 5 1/2 months ago.
-keep cc's within reason, if you find a higher cc for more, the higher cc is worth a bit more (this really only applies to fan cooled to liquid cooled comparisons, if its like a 500 liq. to a 700 liq. no huge difference, maybe an exta $150ish.
Present sleds:
1998 Polaris Indy 500: red screens, red/black Sportech handguards with billet mounts, red C&A pro Razors with 9” sharpers, red gripper running board trim, red hyfax, billet pull handle, billet brake lever, silver front & rear bumpers, low black windshield, custom graphics, clutched (Primary: Polaris blue primary spring #7041080, 10m5 weights, sheave/belt clearance is set at .015''. Secondary clutch: 42/36 helix, SLP black driven spring), geared (dropped 1 tooth), 121" x 15" x 0.91" Camoplast/Polaris track with 96 studs, stripped warning decals, white-faced edge chassis speedometer & tachometer.(For sale).

heres how my list would look
1. is it EFI or CARBED?
2. how much damage will it incur if it hits an object
3. is it easy and or cheap to find parts
4. will it go off trail
thats it

For me...
1st- Price - Hey I'm not going to have a buncha $$$ tied up in something I can only ride 3 months a year.
2nd- Reputation - It has to have a decent mechanical reputation... Ex: My 98 XC 700, good solid motor, a real screamer, not the greatest on fuel...
3rd- Condition - Hey! I don't care if it only has 1000 miles on it if you ripped off trailing arms, put studs through the cooler, and blew out the shocks!
4th- Durability - Goes with reputation I guess, but I want something I won't have to be fixing 3 hours to ride for 30 minutes.
5th- Dealer/Parts Availability - Polaris dealer in town, my brother in law works at (10% off for me :P)
6th- Ride Quality - I'm still young and dumb, and I allow my body to take the beating of older suspension.
7th- Power - Although I enjoy having the power of the 700, I've realized I could have just as much fun if I were riding the same sled with a 440 fan.
1999 Saab 9-3 5dr 2.0T 5spd with a long list of mods planned...
1998 Polaris XC 700 reverse, 96 studs... still stock...
2008 Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI winshield, Tool Box, Winch and Aluminum wheels...
1995 dodge ram 2500 cummins turbo diesel, 335000 miles.
For Sale!
-1954 ford f 100 w/ a 383 stroker, turbo 400 tranny, camaro front clip
For more info on either of these PM me...

All Polaris, all the time. Won't mind a Doo 600 just to try it out. Even then I still love how my 600's perform in the deep and overall. Plus, my dealer is awesome! :)

I agree with everything above, plus what kind of riding are you going to be doing? Whats your passion? You like powder and backcountry, or you like the smooth trail? Each sled has it's purpose.

1.My primary sled has to be a race sled, they hold up alot better to my abuse
2.I really like my 600cc sleds, they seem to run with most any other stock sled. I do like big bores for the arm pulling torque, but my 600 does everything I want it to.
3.Im partial to polaris because I have had great luck with my last 3 polaris sleds, all iv had to do is general maintence.
4. I like both short and long tracks, but for the amount of time I get to go west I have just been renting a MTN sled. Maybe I will get another RMK someday.
5. Price is usually a factor,I usually dont buy anything unless its a good deal.

Brand loyalty and past experience is important. I wont buy anything except for Polaris or Yamaha based upon past experience and for the reputation of quality/reliability that those brands have.

I'll always own Polaris and am very loyal to my current dealer. He sells Kawi dirt bikes and I still have him order my parts for my Yami dirty just to give him the business. I'm pretty hasty when it comes to purchases on my machines. If I like it I usually by it...then ask the wife, LOL. I like my white dragons so I'll be riding them another year since the 10's are red. I haven't thought about this winter yet but I'm probably going to save the 5 or 6 grand it would cost to re-up to 10's and fly out west a couple times. Never made it this year and am still bummed.

The top decision maker in buying a sled should be getting a sled to match your riding style...
If you're looking for a ditch banger, don't buy a lake runner, and vice versa.
Same if you prefer to ride sitting or standing.
Then pick the motor size/style to suit you. Don't buy a 800+ unless you like adrenaline rushes. And don't think you can keep up with yer buddies that are using 700's the lake, with a 340 fan. If you like high fuel mileage and a heavy sled, get a 4 stroke.
Then once you know the gist of what you're looking for, then shop price, brand, etc..
Getting a sled that doesn't suit your riding style, can be unfulfilling at best, and dangerous at worst.
JMO..

96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...

05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

It made me more compassionate, more empathetic, more nurturing...
