What the hell is going on? Example - I listed this tonight http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...031038550320 dollars buy it now. If it sells for 20 dollars my fees are as follows .50 listing fee 12% of final sale price - 2.40 Ebay owns paypal now so NO other forms of payment are allowed! I have a premier account so 2.9% plus .30 = .88 Fees - 3.78 I have to pay shipping so that will be 6 bucks or so. 9.78. I will put in my pocket 10.22 of the sale and do all the work. I am losing almost 20% because of ebay fees (not including the shipping costs). In what I have SOLD 50 dollars worth of stuff on ebay in the last few weeks and listed other things that did not sell. What do I owe ebay? 13 dollars right now. I sold other stuff not on ebay in the past 2 weeks and paid out over 20 dollars in paypal fees. Their rates suck and not being able to take money orders SUCKS Pay Pal fees - http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd...es-outsideEbay fees - http://pages.ebay.com/HELP/SELL/fees.htmlEbay motors fees - http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/motorfees.html

They have gotten outrageous in the last couple years. If you would like to let people know that you would take money orders, I put in the add "other forms of payment accepted" and people will ask if I take money orders. Another thing to look out for, if the person that is paying you has a paypal account outside the Cont US, paypal charges you another 1%, even if they are having you ship it to their address in the US. I sell stuff every day on Ebay and have for years so I know what your talking about.

I was going to put some mustang parts, and the camper i'm selling on ebay, until I read the fees.
I'll only use ebay to buy things, and Craigs List to sell.

Bob I got dinged with that the other day! I accepted 60 bucks from a guy in Canada!
These clowns are just begging for competition.
Ebay owns like 30 percent of craigslist too. Wonder how long it will take them to over power it and screw that up.

When we bought our engine off eBay we contacted the guy outside of ebay, he pulled the listing, sold it to us for less than what we would have paid on eBay and he took more in his pocket.
Isnt there another site called uBid or something? Hows that?

I use PayPal as my card processing for GWR because it is less than 1/2 of the nearest priced service I can find for the business,
but it's still just crazy how much I pay them every year.

I only use ebay for buying parts I cant find anywhere else and for selling parts that I cant sell locally.
You can get way better deals in classifieds on forums such as this one...without the fees.

I was going to get into selling on ebay awhile back. I've been buying since 05, so I figured why not. I looked into it, and after seeing the fees, refused to sell via ebay. Absolutely ridiculous in my mind. I sell all my stuff on forums that are nice enough to have free classifieds (like here), and hope my stuff moves. If not, oh well...back on the shelf it goes.

For a company so big, they should be able to chop down the final value fees thats for sure.
I have been a powerseller for quite awhile now, I must say it isnt nice getting the $100 bill a month for fees, and thats including the 15% fvf discount for good dsr's.
The thing about ebay that bugs me the most, is when a seller lists a good till cancelled listing, ebay recharges listing fees every 30days for that listing (so then why call it good till cancelled!)

You can't pay by money order on ebay any more? I never pay or get paid on ebay with money orders myself, but for them to take that right away from ebay users is selfish and ridiculous

^ Nope. Type it into your auction description and they will not let you list it. Money orders are a sellers way of getting around the stupid paypal fees.. make that were.

I see where that sucks.
You guys are paying about triple what I am per transaction with all the E-Bay fees etc.
Basically you need to figure that all into your final price.
It's what I do,
Only after thousands of transactions a year, I pucker at times when I see the totals I just handed them.

Yeah...
You'd think that in tight financial times like these, when peeps resort to lower cost alternatives like ebay, than retail.. And ebay usage would be going up, that they's cut back a bit on the charges..
But no..... Up and up, and up, and...

And that is why we are able to find less and less useful items on eBay. Only the big sellers seem to have weathered the increases. Hardly ever find anything that is actually an auction. All "buy it now..."

Ebay fees - http://pages.ebay.com/HELP/SELL/fees.html
Ebay motors fees - http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/motorfees.html
Well, not to sound like an ass, but they have put up a website that allows you to list all over the world for a few bucks and you're complaining? Try listing things in the local paper and see what rates you get. I have ZERO stake in eBay, but I just 'parted out' a lawn tractor that blew a rod and was told was maybe worth $100 bucks. The BUYER paid for shipping and I paid $46.50 total for listing fees. I cleared $527.00 with a little work and a few trips to the post office.
Maybe their fees have gone up, but it's still better than newspaper listing or craigslist. Just be smart about your listing...use the best subject listing area, make the buyer pay for shipping, don't add a lot of extra crap that you don't need (borders, multiple pictures *unless it's something that really requires it*, multiple listing categories, etc.
The last time I listed something in the local paper for sale it was $55.00 and I got 3 lines (25 words, I think) and it barely described anything.
I say until something better comes along...suck it up. FWIW...just my 2 cents...

No, you don't sound like an ass. You have a good point about newspapers. They really rape the consumer-and that is why ebay and Craigs list amoung other are out there. They were supposed to be the low cost alternative to the news paper and reach a wider audience to boot.
To me, it should cost far more to get something like ebay up and running than to maintain it. I can understand keeping the fees low at first. A new business needs customers to survive. If an enterprise is willing to defer some of the up front start up costs until later years, they need to raise fees wisely later on. Or they risk the backlash that is happening now. I think that is Matt's point.
Ebay acts as if they are the ONLY online auction.

The big difference between online and printed media costs, is that printed media actually has to print something..
That's after they cart in rolls of paper and barrels of ink, arrange adds articles & classifieds, typeset, print, fold, stack, bundle, deliver and distribute materials. Lots of union labor...
Versus Ebay, which has you place an add in a cookie-cutter template which takes up about 200k of space in a database, on one of several monstrous servers in a data center (more if you pay more for it) and use a minuscule fraction aggregated bandwidth of a couple terabytes a month of internet backbone.
I'm not justifying newspapers, just informing as to some of the reasons for the price differential.

I don't know if this is true but I just read this in an auction on ebay
Any rating below 4.9: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay
*Any rating below 4.8: Seller pays an additional 10% in fees to sell on ebay, and seller's listings are demoted in ebay's search - making them harder to find
*Any rating below 4.6: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay and loses powerseller status. Listings are further demoted in ebay's search
*Any rating below 4.3: Penalty -Seller's listings are moved the the last pages of search results
*Any rating below 4.1: Penalty - Seller is no longer allowed to list on ebay (Click here for ebay's policy of banning sellers at a 4.1 rating)

Nothing, but apparently you're scratching to get in. I don't swing that way though, so you might want to back off...
Everyone wants everything for cheap or free. The problem isn't ebay, it's the people who whine about their fees and whatnot.
Do what everyone else does, pass the buck. Ebay's fees go up? Your auction price goes up. You don't want to risk an auction that might fail? Don't auction your things.
I realize this may seem complicated, but it isn't. Really.

I wasnt referring completely to ebay, did you not read the rest of my post? I agreed dont like it dont use it.
Fees go up, prices go up, chances of selling go down when you can pay just a few bucks more and get it at a store and not have to wait for processing and shipping.
You come off as an arrogant *******, always have from what ive seen on this site. If you dont agree with something its stupid apparently. The guy likes to save his cash and you bust balls for it. And you think you are superior over the rest of us.

Right on, then buy it at a store then and don't give your money to Ebay. Sucks for the seller, but hey, if they can make more money, more power to them. I'm sure if you were on the recieving end of the cash you wouldn't be whining.

I don't recall saying that. However I use common sense. As stated, if Matt or you or myself were on the recieving end of these "fees" and whatnot, we'd be laughing all the way to the bank.
