I can see where it would be helpful for returning stolen bikes. I know our local police department gets overwhelmed with bikes each year that they have to store for I think six months at a time then auction them off.
What's next? Are they going to make you register to walk on the sidewalk? How about skateboarders? Do they have to register their boards too?
What a fiscally responsible plan. How many tax payer dollars are going to go to keep all the paper work straight on that one? Boggles the mind....

My home town has registered bicycles for over 40 years-still free. It does help to get a stolen bike back thus reducing the amount of bikes up for action each year. Probably comes out to a wash dollar wise between the time it takes to process all the registrations and the time it takes to setup and run an auction.
But how is a nonresident supposed to know that they need to register their bike? Are they going to post it on a big sign at each entrance to town?? I imagine that the authors of the bill got some feedback from someone who did not think it would be fair to "exclude" any group or person from the requirement to register.
Find the line between respect and fear....then flirt with it

Were supposed to register our bikes here too. Its free, and if we get caught wearing a helmet we get free ice cream coupons(for kids). I don't register my bike nor wear a helmet, I'm a rebel

I think if you ride your bicycle on the road and think that you are a car you should have to fully register your bike and insure it just like a vehicle. I absolutely hate seeing a bike in a left turn lane. Do you see me walking in the left turn lane? Nope. Do I see a license plate on your bike? Nope. You are not a car, take the cross walk like everyone else.
At the end of the article it said to spend money on "covered bike parking"? WTF is that?

Yep, I get pretty ticked when they are on a state route.and become a point of danger.
Those goofballs should be fined. I yelled at one last Summer... I said " Hey LANCE get on the frickin' bike trail"
If you going to ride them in the neighborhood and rural streets and bike paths then it should be free. When they start taking them out in places where they are endangering the lives of people in or on motorized vehicles, then they should be fined or something IMO!?

When I ride my bike I stick to residential streets and 90% of the time stay on the sidewalk when possible and yield to pedestrians by going on to the street well before I am remotely close to them.

As a avid bicyclist, you guys should know that in some states, towns, counties it is illegal to ride bikes on sidewalks so we are forced to ride streets, state routes, or areas other than a sidewalk or bike path. That's why they are installing bike lanes in many cities around the country. Even riding sidewalks can be dangerous. I was hit by a car last august crossing in the crosswalk by a lady who failed to see me. Broke my left handle bar clean off and threw me up on the hood of her car. She admited fault at first and then backed out once she talked to her insurance. Even tried suing my insurance company to pay for her car ($1500 bucks damage). So the sidewalks aren't as safe as you think. Especially when your cruising at 18-22 miles an hour avg and your hitting chunks in the side walk. That's why many people ride the roads. I for one try close to the shoulder to try and not be a hazard to vehicles but it seems that certain people think it is funny to harass bikers with their cars when they go around you..... So it can be safer for a biker to ride the center. People can go ahead and make fun of my helmet or my bike, because I know that many of them wouldn't say half the crap they do to my face they weren't in their car where they feel safe.

I ride my bike 100% on rural country roads. I average 15-20 mph, wear a helmet, and have a mirror to see behind me. I would be out on it more if I didn't have so much crap to do here. Seems like when I am free, its raining. I only have 60 miles on right now when last year this time I had hundreds.

Probably wouldn't matter where I normally ride.
I like to ride my bike off of stuff in the mountains more than any where.
I'll get some helmet cam footage this year.

alot of places around here have designated bike path which is on the main road and is just part of the road that has a line and says bike trail. kinda stupid if you ask me because it follows busy main roads and cars are flying by and 40-60mph and half of those people are talking on there phone, eating a whopper and not paying attention to the road.

Riding your bike on the street is OK. riding your bike with a buddy in the MIDDLE of the street is another story. I see people just ride in the middle of the street like they own it. In some cases they don't even move over when your behind them. Thats what bothers me. But other than that I have no problem with them being there.

So your a$$ don't get wet after a rain. The guys that ride cycles to work think our company should provide a covered area for them. Company says "don't make me laugh!"

While I agree that covered bicycle parking seems like a waste of taxpayer dollars NOT raised by the FREE bicycle permits, I mostly disagree with your first paragraph. It is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk and especially on the crosswalk in most places. If you hate seeing a bike in the left turn lane, would you rather they take a left turn from the right shoulder? You don't walk in the left turn lane, because there are sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians, and it is illegal to walk in the left turn lane. Bicycles turning left are supposed to be in the left turn lane. Bicycles are not registered for the same purpose as automobiles. They do not contribute to the deterioration of roadways. Also, liability insurance is not required because it is highly unlikely that substantial damage can be caused by a bicycle. And, if it were, there would be a fair amount of damage to the bicycle or person, so hit and runs aren't too common on bicycles, either.
But, at the same time, I agree that it is stupid to ride a bicycle where you will be in the way or putting your life in danger.
