Yesterday I found out that a friend of mine, member and moderator here on the site, Richard Smith (XCSP 700GUY) was in a head on collision with a semi just north of Fergus Falls, MN. From what I have heard, he crossed over the center line. The semi driver was not hurt, Richard was killed. He recently graduated from UND in Grand Forks, ND with an engineering degree and was on his way to Minneapolis to start his new job and life at LKPB Engineers, Inc. Today would have been his first day. Sadly, he did not make it.

Richard has been a friend of mine since high school. He graduated two years after I did but we did a lot of snowmobiling together and talked about sleds every time we seen each other. He is in some of the very first snowmobile fanatics pictures and videos I ever took/made. He has also been on the site since the early days. I remember him asking me on a daily basis at school when I was going to make him a moderator. No matter how many times he would ask, I'd tell him no just to get him riled up a bit, and then he would poke and prod some more. Finally I ended up giving in and he has been on the moderating team for a few years. Throughout the college years we continued snowmobiling whenever opportunities arose. He was fun to ride with, always pushing the limits of the sled, never going slow by any means.

Richard was also a big fan of ice oval racing. He had many friends at Wahl Brothers Racing and traveled with them to races all over the country throughout the season. He was a straight shooter, a good, honest guy. He never gave anyone any trouble, was pretty reserved, and just wanted to enjoy life and have fun...your typical "nice guy". It is unfortunate that this had to happen. He is so young and had so much to look forward to in life.

You will be missed Richard, by plenty of people, including myself. Keep watch over us, for you have joined the rest of the snowmobile fanatics who have passed before us. You will always be a great part of this site.

Update for those interested in a card / donating, please see my post below: http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...st=1043700

I saw the story on facebook. I thought I recognized the name, but could not place it. It all clicked after you posted this.

He was a young man that was taken much too early...and although I did not know him, he sounds like a great guy that will truely be missed. My condolences go out to his friends, family, and loved ones.

RIP buddy.

This sucks Erick.
It's already about the worst news one can hear on a forum, but then it's your friend too.
I'm sorry to hear this.

I would also like to send some $ if nothing less than for flowers at his funeral. Maybe something with a card from SF that his family can have.

I have just stumbled upon this thread while searching for articles about my best childhood friend. If anyone would like to send donations or cards, you can contact me through the private messaging and I will pass along where you can send these items.

Right now, I have been asking for the thoughts and prayers for Richard, his family, and his many many friends. Richard was a very humorous guy, and he had such a positive outlook on life. Unfortunately God decided to take him at only 24 years old. He is already greatly missed, and we will always remember the special times he spent with his friends and family.

I also wanted to post on this forum for a specific reason. What is Richards screen name, and also, how can I find some previous posts from him? Thank you all that have responded so far, your thoughts and prayers do not go unappreciated. Thanks

I posted a link to his profile in my original post, but you can also find it here. His user name is "XCSP 700GUY".

You can view the most recent topics he has posted in by looking in the "Recently Posted In Topics" section of his profile (near the bottom) otherwise you can view all the topics he has posted in by clicking them link "View XCSP 700GUY's Posted In Topics" (near the top).

It is so sad. I still can hardly believe it. I think I'll be putting together a card and those members who want their name, username, and location printed in it will get a chance. Stay tuned for more details.

Also, thanks to those who have responded. I know it means a lot to Richard, and it means a lot to his family, myself, and all of his other friends.

On a much lighter note to compliment the humor comment above, it appears that this was Richards last post.

I hope you are getting your wish now man!!

I went thru and was reading some his past posts (just as we all did when ripn left us). I get a very unerving feeling when reading some of the things that suggest there is a greater power at hand that we are all unaware of.

Its very hard to handle when you lose a close friend Erick but everythings happens with a purpose. I happened to read about the accident in the Duluth News Tribune on-line about the same time you started this post!

May Richard Rest In Peace and Godspeed!

It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!
