Alright, I need to get a laptop for college and I can't really afford anything new, but I found a nice used one on Craigslist for $400. Here are the specs on it:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...c=en&lc=en
What do you guys think? It will mostly be used for school crap and probably some games.

You can get a new Toshiba or Acer on newegg.com for that price. And you would at least have a year warranty. Get one with 2 Gigs of memory minium and a dual core CPU.

For school and gameing this laptop will work just fine. It has a fast processor (1.8ghz) and appears to have about 1G of Ram (if you find the computer to be slow you can order more ram at your local radio shack for under $50) and it has alot of hard drive space. Should run software and applications related to school fairly fast and efficient. Hope this info helps you to decide.
P.S. I am a computer nut so when I look for one I am looking at the processor speed (1.8 or higher), 1G of RAM or higher, and lots of hard drive space.

My girlfriend just got a laptop off of tigerdirect.com for like $475 and it has a 2.2Ghz Dual Core AMD CPU, 3 Gigs of Ram, and a 300GB HDD. Hers came with vista home premium, i nuked it all when she first got it and put a fresh install on it to get rid of all the extra crap. Runs like a top now.
My suggestion would be to put the extra coin down and get a new one from either newegg or tigerdirect (or another good site like those).

I'm a computer salesperson, I have one thing to say: DO NOT BUY USED.
Also, listen to srx_600 and watch www.tigerdirect.com
Always great deals there.
Epic.

Some tips when buying a laptop...
Never, ever, ever, buy the el-cheapo bottom end models, even from compaq/hp... They are built with the cheapest components that can be called a laptop, and made to work till the warranty runs out, and then die. (and then you can buy another one)
I own an e-machines middle of the road AMD 3000+ with 1gb ram that I bought refurb, and My step daughter received a compaq/hp POS 3500+ 1gb lappy from her father for x-mas. Her lappy is a POS, laggy, click-n-wait PITA, and my e-machines runs circles around it. I even bumped hers up to 1GB ram to speed it up, and it was no help, the motherboard's configuration and bus speeds are just abominable.
Truth be told, I think that my old a$$ Compaq Armada p2-366 laptop could keep up with her 3500+ because it was a high end unit in it's day, and the new one is junk.
I have also had to replace both batteries (CMOS and ni-cad) in her laptop, and my e-machines ni-cad battery is just dying at 4 years old.
And I agree!! As soon as you buy a laptop, save the drivers to a pop-drive then blow away the OS on it and start with a clean install and reinstall the drivers from the pop-drive.. They come with so much pre-installed junk, that you'll see a noticable difference in speed by doing so.
Also stay away from ANYTHING norton/symantec, except corporate software. It's worse than useless, as it gives you a false sense of security that it's doing something, yet it'll slow down your pc and make it crash.

Thats a pretty good deal, but the OS is 64-bit rather then the typical 32-bit so support my be hard to find. But if you get it and nuke it right away and put in a 32-bit OS you should be good.

You need the 64 bit OS to make use of all the RAM. If you change it to 32 then the max you can use is 3 gb of RAM.
I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and I run all my old 32 bit programs on it without any trouble.

X2.
I've been running 64-bit for a while and had no problems with 32-bit programs. 64 bit is really coming into the market hard now. It's the way to go IMO.

Okay, what about refurbed computers? Good, bad, okay? Its a nice computer and right in my price range. I know the price is because of the refurb, but I couldn't afford the same thing new. I guess I could get the warranty deal they offer or I could just take it somewhere to get it fixed if it breaks. That's not too big of a deal to me.

By the time you get the warranty or pay for the repairs it may need you would have spent enough money to just purchase new.
My recomendation...buy a Mac...but they will be out of your price range.

Refurbs are like used, except that they have been cleaned up and had broken stuff fixed.
IMO, grab a refurb... Save the buxx, and know that whatever normally goes wrong with that particular model, already has, and has already been repaired. So it has a scratch or dent, it's functionally new and will probably outlast a new version of the same model.
And don't buy extended warranty, they are a rip-off.

If you're that kind of person, some people have no desire to fiddle with computers.

I know what you're saying, if you dont want any hassle buy new. But if you like to tinker then a refurb isnt a bad idea.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to buy the Gateway. I'm not much of a computer tinkerer. I can operate them, but all the computer talk is a foreign language to me!

I had a Toshiba M115, and the only thing I've broke on it in the last 3 years was the dvd drive because I dropped it and it broke the drive. I've had good luck with toshiba. Only thing is, most of them, after 2-3 years, the screen controller goes out, and its a $20 repair.
