I'm looking at two sleds but have no clue which to buy, they are the same price. I'm pretty new to sledding, but my main criteria, is reliability and fuel economy. Which sled would meet those? Also, top speed is not a factor to me one bit, but I want something that snaps out of the corners, and one that I can kind of throw around and have some fun on.

The first sled is 1996 Arctic Cat ZR 440. It has:
Polished tunnel
Steering post moved above support
Firecat tunnel grips
Foot treads
New seat cover
Sno-pro handlebars
Doubled up mount brackets for riser
Purple skid plate
Black low windshield
Raider handguards
Billet brake handle

Suspension:
Clicker front shocks
AWS4 with aluminum bulkhead
A-D Boivin Expert suspension skid

Engine:
D&D twin pipes
VM38 carbs with dial a jets
Boysen reeds
K&N filterchargers

Clutching:
Arctico 9 tower primary
Updated roller secondary (plastic rollers)
D&D weights
D&D grey secondary spring
Micro Belmont 57/38 helix
D&D orange primary spring

Shows 2300 miles (rounded up)and comes with an extra track.

The second sled is a 1999 Arctic Cat ZR 500. It has 4100 miles with a recent rebuild. It has a clutch kit, but no further modifications.

So what do you guys think? Which sled sounds better to you?

^I've got a '96 ZR 440, and they're really fun to ride when they run right, but they're pretty finicky on jetting. I've heard good things about the 500s, but I don't think it'll touch the 440 around corners!

If the pricing isnt that much difference just get the 440 and put a tempaflow in it.

Sorry for the slow response. I've heard that dial-a-jets or tempaflows do help, but one really good investment is a pair of Nology HotWires for the 440s. I can't say, I've never run either, but come about October I'm ordering some hotwires for my sled.

My vote is for the 440 because that 440 will be able to smoke a 500 in a drag race also a 440 is a better machine because you will be able to find engine parts for it easier and with the 440 you can find more racer parts for it.

1998 Polaris Indy 500 chassis with 98 Xc 600 motor
SLP ceramic coated pipe with SLP can
V-force reeds
4 inch pivot riser
Gutted Air Box
EPI clutch kit soon to be installed
Maybe some pro tapers

1998 XC 700 water-cross sled
SLP twin pipes
Some light weight parts
Water-cross mods include taking the parts u do not need
This includes removing the seat replacing gas tank and IFS bars.

One person's mods could be a nightmare to you. Who knows how well the owner put them on or what kind of condititon they're in now. The 500 is extremely reliable and will almost certainly get better milage that the decked out 440. Ya the 440 might be faster, but the ZR2 chassis in the 500 handles very well and its a relatively blank canvas for you to customize any way you want. Plus the aftermarket for the ZR2 chassis sleds is much larger (although it too is dying) than the ZR1 (the 440's) chassis. Just my .02.

I do not know the way you ride or can handle a sled though i would go with the 440!!! I have two 96's and have never had a problem with either of them!

Thanks,

go with the 440. if it had probelms it sounds like the guy fixed them with all the mods he did. it has less miles which means less wear and tear on the bogeys and bearings and so on..

2002 1/2 zr 440 sno pro
-D&D clutching
-Fox shocks
-6 inch bar risers
-C&A skis
-1.5 track
