I need to get a truck that's better on gas then mine because of a new job that's a hour drive. I'm looking at a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 with ext. cab short bed, 2.4 4 cylinder and a five speed stick shift. Toyota claims 27 mpg highway and 18 city. Does anyone have one and that can give me a real figure? Thanks.

Brother has that exact truck, HATES THE MPG!!!! no way in heck it'll get 27 hwy, maybe down and outa gear, LOL!!! he says he averages about 19/20 as a daily driver.
Might want to look into the full size Chevy/Gmc, they have the v8 that shuts down to 4 cyl. once at crusing speed, buddy swaers he gets 24 MPG on average as a daily driver in his but he doesn't get as good with the flex fuel(ethenol), it cost's less but he said he doesn't get as good of milage so it's a wash.

That's what I've got. 02 Chevy 2500 HD. It's a absolute fuel pig! maybe 10 mpg if I'm lucky.

If you buy a truck with a small engine you will just end up trying to pull loads that are to big for it and burning more gas than if you had a bigger engine. My dad has a 1999 f-150 with the v-8, and my friend has a 1998 with the v-6, and my friends truck gets way worse mileage.

I bet he was talking about a 1500 with a 5.3L with cylinder deactivation. My dad and bro have those.. my dad got 22 mpg on the expressway his last trip out here to bring me some stuff. But seriously, if you are looking to do the drive you are talking about, why are you looking at trucks? Get a gas saver like a cobalt or fusion and leave your truck at home. I noticed another link was put up to fuel economy.. here is another website people use. www.fueleconomy.gov search for a car, click the car, and it gives you user reports based on that configuration.

I've got a 5 speed '92 toyota pickup. It's not exactly the one you're asking about (its not 4x4 and old enough that they didn't call them Tacomas yet) but it consistantly gets 25 mpg. It'll pull decent for a little pickup too, but the milage goes down to about 20.

My father has an 08 4x4 4cyl 5 spd, and he drives it like an old man and he gets an average of 23mpg, doesn't do much of any highway, his old 2000 got 27ish, the new body style rides much nicer, feels like alot more of a truck than the older ones, you'll like it. I used it a couple times to pull my 2 place trailer, and it did the job just fine

I need a truck to haul my bike, sled and other stuff I always have. I've thought about a car but I've had em and it doesn't fit my life stile. (if I was to get a car it would be a VW TDI) I had a 2004 1500 with the 5.3 and it got OK fuel mileage, 15 mpg or so.

I have an 07 Tacoma TRD Cab Plus, 4.0L 4X4 with auto trans. If I can keep under 70moh pulling a single sled trail I get 17mpg in the winter. In the summer running empty under 70mph I get 22-23mpg.
My last Toyota truck was a 94, 3.0L stick and got 17mpg no matter what!
It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!

i used to have the 2.4 l toyota. pulling two sleds i got about 14 mpg. driving freeway (75-80 mph) i got about 20 mpg, and driving city i would get about 22. but are you talking about an 09? cuz they dont make the 2.4, its a 2.7 I4 i believe.

The one at the dealer said 2.4 on the window tag. It's brand new so I just figured it was a 2009.

Don't even think of a tahoe like mine,
99 tahoe with 350 vortek,
17 hwy, 15 hwy/city average per tank right now, and 11 to 12 pulling my open ride on/off 2 place with 2 sleds

I have a 96 tacoma ext cab 4x4. 2.7 5 speed. Wish I would have bought a full size. Dad gets same if not better mileage with his 04 silverado, with a ton more power. I see 19 almost constantly Daily driven highway/city commute. Towing down to 15ish. The truck is a slug without towing and almost dangerously slow towing with traffic.
But the yotas run FOREVER......if the frames dont rot out.
