Not sure what to do with it, thought someone might have an answer for me.
When i went to college eight years ago i got a HP desktop. I put a second hard drive in it and saved all my music to it. There is about 6000 song on this hard drive that i want to get off. I havent used the computer in about four years. Turned it all on the other day and its all there, but the nothing works. The CD writer doesnt work, and the usb ports dont work, and there is no internet. I have no way of getting these songs off the computer and onto my new one without removing the hard drive and putting it in another computer, but my newer computer is a laptop so i can do that. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them onto some kind of device to i can transfer them??

Get a external USB Hard drive closure. They are also referred to as "backpacks".
Figure out what type of hard drive it is (most likely an EIDE at that age) and get an usb closure to put it in.
Once you install it on the closure, connect it to your laptop and let the drivers load (they should automatically, but it might take a few minutes)
After that, the external drive will be in "my computer" just like an internal drive, just copy your files over.
Afterwords, wipe the external drive clean and back up your new lappy to it. And if your lappy ever crashes, you'll have backup ready.

External drives like the enclosure Ugly_old_Poo_kid refers to would just connect to a USB port on your laptop and his backup idea as a last step is smart thinking. Drive enclosures arenot overly expensive, but the problem is many people only use them once for situation like this. You could almost have someone else do it for you for about the same prine.
That being said you could just take it into a computer store and have them do it for a nominal fee. All your music is just considered "data" and transfering from one location to another should not involved jumping through a lot of hoops. A comp repair store does this all the time.
From the sounds of it doing it your own is still possible but having help would be nice.

Yes, this device is a little box, just a little larger than a hard drive itself. (about 2" x 4" x 7") It'll have 2 cords with it, one if for powering it from a wall, the other us a USB cord, that will plug into a USB port on your laptop.
To take the old HP apart, you'll use a phillips-head screwdriver. Pop the cover, and look for a flat cable about 2" wide, it'll look something like the one in my avatar. There's a couple in there, ignore the one for the Floppy drive and the CD, just unplug the hard drive and take out a couple screws and it'll come out.
Put it in the backpack, close up the backpack, power it up and plug it in, then connect it to lappy.
The entire process should take about 15 minutes.
The USB closure itself can cost anywhere between $5 and $35. At newegg.com you can probably get a lower priced one for under $15.00, including shipping.

How difficult is it to connect to the internet? If its not hard just get it connected and then try to get a new driver for the USB ports. That of course is assuming the reason your USB ports do not work is because of a software related issue.
Of course you may just be better off getting the enclosure and then you have it for future use. I did that awhile ago with an old drive and i am glad i did it because i use it a lot, especially with back ups that i normally do every week.

definitely go with an enclosure or an ide/usb adapater, that way you can reuse the drive for storage later.

i looked at the enclosures a little bit. I didnt know i could take the hard drive out of the desktop and hook it up the the external drive. I'm gonna do that i guess. I put the other hard drive in there myself, but its been years since i used to mess with that stuff. Thanks for the help.
