I just have a small Polaris one, use it all the time when I'm riding. It's' comfortable, don't even know it's there. I have absolutely no storage on my sled. I carry a quart of spare oil, wool mittens (my hands get cold easily) a set of goggles, a few other small items, etc. It's usually full.

I love my HMK pack. After like 5 miles you dont even know its there. THey offer much more storage as well. I carry a tow strap, some tools, water, power bars, a flash light and a few other essencials as well as a shovel, probe, and a sno bungie. They are really handy.

I forget which brand I have. I don't see why it makes a difference if you are on a trail or in the back country? I feel completely naked without mine on, and it isn't light either....Don't skimp on quality and get one bigger than you think you will need because you will fill it up faster than you think.

I wore a backpack on our 600 mile trip from Gaylord to Munisining and back in 2 days. It was a lot of fast trail riding, off trail riding, drifts, just a little bit of everything. I had no problem wearing it. Mine is actually a backpack i bought in elementary and I've been using for when we go on short trips to carry stuff. Its just a decent Columbia backpack, nothing special. If you are going to look at backpacks id look for ones that have something to hold the straps together. One problem i noticed when i first wore it around here was the top of the straps wanted to slide down my shoulders and wouldnt let me move my arms. I got a ratchet strap and hooked it to the straps and pulled them together. Im sure some people laughed and i got some weird looks but it worked. On the bottom of my straps there was another little strap that held the two big straps together. Its just a minor thing that most people dont think about but it made a big difference when my straps were held together and not able to slide around or move.

Here are a couple pictures of me riding with my backpack. You can see the ratchet strap on my chest holding the straps together.

Most backpacks made for skiing etc... have the straps to hold the shoulder straps together and distribute the weight more across your chest. Make sure you have at least 1 if not 2 of these straps. They help out considerably and stop the pack from bouncing around on your back. Most skiing packs also already have an area for your shovel/probe to go inside or on the outside of the pack and are camelback ready.

There is my pack. Halfway through the year I got sick of digging my shovel out and putting it away wet so it is now attached to the outside. I would guess it ways 15-20 lbs total with all my crap in it and I never even notice it is on my back. Goggles, shovel, probe, emergency food, water, gloves, balaclava, socks, first aid, flashlight, hatchet, goggle lenses, maps, spark plugs, registration information etc... are all stuffed into that. I really hate digging into the damn thing just because it is a pain to repack it is so full. All the important stuff like the goggles, gloves hatchet and probe are all easily accessible.

I would say you can't go wrong with Black Diamond brand. If you look around you can probably get a package deal with a shovel and a probe that you could sell on ebay and get your money back for the pack. (that is if you don't rde in areas where you need that equipment) I ride hard, and boondock through tight trees/branches all the time and haven't had any damage whatsoever to the pack. I've had branches get caught that just about rip me off the sled, but haven't ripped the pack yet.

I have a Fly,the problem I ran into it that it did not fit very well with my Tek-Vest on. The only time I use it is when I go to the MTNs,which I usually rent a IQ. My pack fits perfect under the back of the IQ seat,I strap it around the seat braces plus use a bunji strap to keep it from bouncing. Works good for me!

Here's mine, you can sort of see it here.

I forget what kind it is, Tour something. Brand is not important though.
The important parts for me:

Plenty of room in the main compartment to carry lots of stuff,
A place to get to my probe and/or shovel in a hury. You don't want that on your sled because sometimes you have to dig out the sled to get to the shovel and that sucks
Outer compartment for spare goggles, spare gloves and some of that lighter stuff.
Padded waiste belt and upper strap accross the chest to hold the pack tight and make it move with me.
It had to be comfortable, so that meant it had to be something I could try on.
Originally I had a Cammels Pack in it, but about the second time I rolled down a hill and had water leak down my neck, I started carrying water bottles instead.
That's some cold stuff right there.

My tools and water are in the sled bag under my seat to keep the heavier weight on it, rather than on me,
But then I have all of the back country survival stuff in the pack,
do a search on that for contents, it's been done a couple times and honestly, my list is longer than I want to think about right now.

I thought you had a FLY pack? Or did you get a new one last year?

Myself, I ride with a HMK Backcountry pack. I usually don't even know it's there. I use it both for the mountains and here at home in the flatlands. I can see how some people say the HMK's are too small. Mine is fairly full, and I don't carry half the stuff alot of serious mountain sledders do.

I ride an HMK backpack with a Black Diamond Shovel. The arm folds down into the blade of the shovel and it's awesome. While most people are trying to grab the peices of their shovel, mines ready to go and out in a quick second. It's bout the slickest setup I've seen for a shovel. Plus I can collapse it down in a second into the blade and not have to worry about the handle hitting my helmet.

This is my exact shovel-

Mine is decent. It's not as short as some that I've seen and I've never had an issue with the length. I wanna say it's just about as long as the SOS shovel or the HMK one provided. It may be a bit shorter but not to the noticeable point. There are a few people that I ride with that are switching over and the ones that aren't is due to their shovels having the saw blade in their handle. Which is mighty handy Btw.

I have the same. I too thought it was a bit expensive but worth every penny when it breaks down and fits nicely into the pack. I believe it's not the brand of backpack you have, it's what's in it that's more important. Find something light and roomie regardless of brand and worry more about the contents. I got mine from Marlboro and everything I need while riding fits perfectly. I still have room to stash any garbage I find while riding too.

I used a Dakine backpack two years ago, and Didn't really notice it. For my next backpack I would probably look into HMK's.

I had a dakine for awhile. But then I bought a Camelbak with an insulated water tube and lots of storage. Its the best pack Ive had because it has a place for shovel, probe, extra gloves, extra layer, and all sorts of other goodies. But, the biggest advantage to it is the water bladder thats insulated so neither tube nor the bladder will freeze up even in the most unforgiving temperatures. So while my buddies have to stop an get their water bottles out i just just take a big gulp from my camelbak on the go and just keep on rippin it.
