Grrr...
Here's the story for those who may care or might be interested.
Three years ago we bought a 2003 John Deere 4710 sprayer with about 1300 hours on it. When we got it delivered in the spring we found it would never start if it was colder than about 10 degrees celcius outside. It would crank and smoke like crazy but not fire, until you boosted it. It was very annoying. Eventually we did a compression test on the engine to find out some cylinders were low. Luckily the dealer had given us a 50 or so hour warranty and this was happening before we ever used it. As to not be without a sprayer for awhile during the season and normally it's warmer than 10 degrees in spraying season they let us use it, since once it was running it ran ok, it was lacking power and used a fair bit of oil but it worked.
So in the fall we brought it in and they fixed the engine. New pistons/cylinders and some other stuff, since we didn't pay for it, we never saw the invoice. Either way it stopped using oil and had power again for the second season.
After the rebuild it was filled with 10W30 engine break-in oil. They told me to change the oil after 100 hours back to normal 15W40 oil. This came due last year around when we were spraying fungicides on the wheat and canola, around 1600 hours. Then when I was spraying pre-harvest roundup on the wheat last fall I had a mishap which included bending the boom, severely, so we got a rental and never used ours again that season. Got it back in the fall sometime and put it in the shed.
Now a couple of weeks ago I go out to spray wheat and corn and I notice smoke in the air behind me in my mirrors. I get out and notice the side of the engine is completely covered in oil, so shut it down and check things out, the crankcase breather had a shot O-ring and it was spitting out there. Figured no big deal. Changed the O-Ring and kept spraying. Well all that did was funnel the oil down further before it sprayed back on everything. So more problems...
We changed the on-board air compressor since we found oil in the air tank, the compressor is lubricated with engine oil and that made the crankcase pressure drop a little bit. But it was still spitting oil out. It was quite bad to, I'm talking about 7 liters (almost two gallons) of oil every three hours. So we did another compression test and sure enough, cylinders 5 and 3 are a good 60 to 100 psi lower than the rest of them. So the 4710 is once again getting overhauled. This is approximately two hundred hours after the first rebuild.
Once again we are in spraying season with no sprayer. Last fall when I bent the boom the rental we got was a 2001 4710 that looked like it had been to hell and back. It was in very rough shape. I was happy to have my sprayer back.
This time I don't think that will be the case.
Here's what they gave me this time around:
Brand new, 2009 John Deere 4730. 100' boom. Stainless tank. Stainless boom. Autosteer, auto boom height, deluxe cab. 18 hours on it when they dropped it off.
Spraying soybeans.
4730
Boom.
4730. No idea why picture is blurry.
Steering wheel. See the fancy new "re-torque things" hanging from the turn signal.
Looking forward.
The only bad thing about this 4730 is there is plastic on the seat and the guy at the dealer said I couldn't rip it off. So it is not all that comfy to sit on.
Either way I wanna keep it. It has more power and is a lot nicer to ride in than our 4710. Usually that's how new stuff is though... Better than what you already have... haha
Every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. That means every day you see me, that's the worst day of my life.

That's some pretty bad luck with the JD equipment. How much have you spent in rental/rebuilds the last couple years???
That new one looks pretty nice...

Good work Polarisfreak08. Does Bobcat even offer a sprayer? Not to my knowledge. Keep coming with those amazingly informative posts...
My uncles run Case/International equipment and have had good luck, but there is always something to fix on a farm. No matter what brand your running...

good one. It looks like in pirates of the Caribbean when they are going off the end of the planet. I found a pic
It amazes me how different it is out there than it is here. I would go freakin bonkers out there!
What are those chemicals and what do they do (besides give my unborn kids 3 testicles).

Yeah, well, farming on flat ground is easier than hills. I like my flat land.
The chemicals kill weeds and hopefully poison people. Unfortunately people seem to be living longer now that these chemicals are used, so that sucks.
Either way, it was just Roundup...

Quote originally posted by Polaris-Man Either way, it was just Roundup... Just askin.. I dont know crap about that kind of stuff. Why does killing weeds matter? Seriously, I am not being a dick.. just wondering. The ONLY thing growing around here for farmers is corn for their cows and hay to bale. I don't think I have ever seen a real sprayer. Roundup is safe to eat?

Weeds use up expensive fertilizer and choke the crop. I have a picture from 2003 where dad missed a strip with the sprayer and the weeds went nuts.
You can see where the chemical killed the weeds, the corn is dark green and nice looking. Where it missed it's yellow and short and lousy looking.
Technically you could probably drink roundup but you probably wouldn't be feeling so hot after. What's more hazardous to people are insecticides you use to kill bugs, those are more likely to kill you.
Either way, I've been around these chemicals my whole life and I'm fine health-wise. Dad is like 57 and he's fine too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

P-man that sucks on the problems, atleast they should cover it under warranty. They must have done a really cheap overhaul and didn't replace the liners or screwed something up bad, also if turbocharged how do the inlet side fins look like, are they all nasty from eating dirt. Could also maybe the turbo causeing all the blowby, i've seen that before. When you get it back beat the hell out of it to make sure the rings seat really well.
I spend money i don't have, on parts i don't need, to impress people i don't know.

We disconnected the turbo to test that, as the service manager at the dealer thought it could be the turbo as well.
When that made no difference we did a compression test. Cylinders 3 and 5 were a good 80 psi lower than the rest.
Making it work hard shouldn't be a problem this year, the ground is so soft, when there is 800 gallons of water in the tank, getting it up to a good 15 mph takes some HP.

I figured if you're like the farmers who bring in some of their equipment, the tractor only idles to warm up then its wide open all the time. I was out riding in the country yesterday ana there was alot of fresh cut hay and i love the smell of that.

P-man a lot of the guys around here haven't had very good luck with the JD sprayers. Most of the sprayers you see around this area are Summers Super Sprayers or the Case IH. self-propelled sprayers. The biggest reason for switching from the Deere are that everyone claims the Case IH has a superior ride.

So do they have the actual cause of the low compression figured out yet?
Or are they just band-aiding it to let you be doomed to repeat this all again?

They apparently "don't know" why it blew up again.
It'll probably be band-aided and blown up again soon.
I wanna keep this 4730. It works good. Price tag is a little high though, up in that between 250 to 300 grand mark...

very unusual for john deere. once warm nothing wrong with running them hard. they might have fixed the bad cylinders before and not done a complete overhaul, might be problems with the intake?
