I have a 1991 Yamaha Phazer 2, only dished out a couple of hundred bucks and looking back maybe i wouldnt have bought b/c the guy i bought it from was rude and hid a lot of stuff from me about the sled. But what done is done and i now need to know why it is smoking, it is a white smoke and isnt too noticable untill you rev up, then it just fogs ythe entire area, untill you let off the throttle, and it feels like it is almost cutting out on power but that may not be. Now i have not worked on any snowmobiles, just ATV's and outboards, as far as recreational use. Any ideas as to fix this problem, or check for issues, black usually mean rings, block, or cylinder damage; oil of course, too rich, but white is puzzling, I've heard coolant but im not sure if this sled uses coolant or not. Any help would be great.

Is it backfiring? And its pretty simple to check if its liquid cooled. It either has a fan above the recoil starter, or there bouts, or it has a coolant reservoir up towards the oil reservoir.

Phazers of that era were fan cooled, not liquid. But coolant in the cylinder would have been my first thought. Puzzling indeed...

Yeah, thats what i was thinking, with the fan, i didnt notice any coolant, but ive heard thats what white smoke was.Yet i didnt see any coolant. What antifreeze? Would there be any in a snowmobile thats causing it to smoke?

~~And no it isnt backfiring, starts in one pull, runs well, i thought i was noticing cut outs in power though when first started.

phazers are fan cooled. not liqued. unless its an exciter. it could just be the oil smoke your seeing. all mine smoke badly in the warm weather. theyll fog ya right out. so im thinking thats all your seeing is the normal smokeing caused by the warm weather.

I think it should be a 485 fan ,check the oil pump lever it has alignment marks for min-max .if it has the fuel it came with dump the tank and clean it, he could have pissed in it for all you know .

Sounds normal to me, if you dont let it run for very long or very hard it will get loaded up and smoke. As for the power loss i would do a compression check and see where that leaves you.

When i start my sleds up during this time of the year they smoke so bad that i disappear in the cloud. Does it smell like two stroke smoke, or have another scent?

I would have to say it might be a light blue smoke that looks white and that means that you are a little rich on the oil. The people are saying that it is not liquid cooled so I would say that you are a little rich on oil.
