The Toyota Camry is more American than the Ford F-150, at least according to Cars.com's annual American-Made Index.

The findings further muddy the buy American debate that rages across the country.

Toyota Motor Corp. also is the most American car company, according to the rankings of the index in terms of U.S. content in its cars and trucks.

The findings are based on where each vehicle is built, its popularity based on sales volume and the percentage of the parts made in the U.S. based on the cost or value of those parts.

This year, the Camry (not counting the hybrid or the Solara) dethroned the F-150 which had been a five-time winner. The Ford truck came in at No. 2.

Toyota had the most individual models on the list with four, including the Sienna minivan in the sixth spot, followed by the Tundra full-size pickup, and the new Venza crossover at No. 10.

Detroit's Big Three automakers collectively have five vehicles in the top 10 spots, which is their lowest showing since Cars.com started the index in 2006 and was conducted twice a year initially.

"This year was unique for our index, to say the least," said Patrick Olsen, editor of Cars.com. "The difficult sales environment and changes in cars' domestic-parts content -- both important factors in our index's equation -- played a huge role in how the rankings changed from last year."

The results likely won't go over well in Detroit, said analyst Joe Phillippi of AutoTrends Consulting Inc. in Short Hills, N.J., but the more important point is that the vehicles and many of their parts are made in the U.S. and "we need all the payroll generation we can get."

To its credit, Toyota has maintained its headcount in the U.S., Phillippi said. "There have not been wholesale firings and mass layoffs and they continue to employ a lot of people even in a downturn and their game plan is to continue to employ more."

General Motors Corp. results were impacted because the methodology used excludes models slated to be discontinued that do not have a clear successor. That wipes out the Pontiac G6, for example, which has scored well in the past, but has fallen victim to GM downsizing. Also absent from the list this year is the Chevrolet Cobalt, which has fewer domestic parts and seen its sales fall off because it, too, is being discontinued. It will be replaced by the all-new Chevrolet Cruze next year.

GM retains three vehicles in the top 10 with the Chevrolet Malibu taking the third spot and the Chevrolet Silverado (5th) and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup (8th).

The Ford Taurus had the most domestic parts at 90 percent but landed 9th on the list, largely because the new Taurus is selling about 2,000 units a month compared with about 25,000 Camrys a month.

Chrysler Group LLC has no vehicles in the top 10. The company's high-volume minivan is made in Canada.

Something to think about before you feel oh so patriotic driving your Ford, GM or Chrysler product.

That list is total bull**** and so are the idiots that listen to cars.com. They factor in sales and other stupid bullcrap and give the article a title of "most american".

HERE is the actual list and you can look at past years
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nht...e=standard

It is clear that the domestics are the most vehicles with highest content AND and american company. Cars.com is a bunch if idiots to even say toyota is the most american car company. In no way shape or form is it.

Your tax dollars are at risk here so you better hope things get better.

Work in the industry designing parts for them instead of selling the stupid toyota parts you sell at a service counter and get a clue.

Do your research before posting stupid misconstrued articles such as this. Look at that list for 2009. Both the camary and F-series are 75% american parts content and assembled in the usa. BUT, Ford is a domestic company.. Ding Ding Ding.. when comparing just those two like the article did, FORD is more american. Cars.com factors in amount of sales of the vehicle, the F-150 sales dropped because of gas prices DUH.

Screw cars.com that worthless piece of crap site

I'll agree with ACM on this one, but a little disappointed with the Mustang - an American muscle car with only 70% US parts??? While every manufacturer has some jap in it, I'll stick with the blue oval!!!

They do not factor in that the majority of US car parts not made in USA, are made in Mexico or Canada. While the majority of Jap car parts not made here, are made in japan.

^ Also, the list to AALA that I posted, Mexico and Canada are considered "outside" fyi. And if you go to mexico and canada, you see alot of domestics. You go to japan, you see nil. At least mexico and canada are buying the domestics and contributing to the pot.

While we are on the subject of American car companies:

Chrystler is now a good percentage owned by Fiat, an Itallian company.
Now we are down to the big 2 American car companies.

GM has recieved big bucks from each of us tax payers in the form of bail out money, and I'm not sure how that is going to turn out because I don't think this has been done before.
I'm hoping that they pay us back with military equipment and wipe the board clean that way. It will keep people working, give GM a viable way to work off the debt, and act as a sort of pre-payment for equipment that we will be spending money on later anyway. Hummers, Detroit Deisel engines, and a large list of other equipment is already made by GM for our military, so it's not that large of a reach, in theory anyway.
Time will tell there for sure. I'm in "watch and see mode" there

And then Ford, they refused the bail out moneys entirely and I do give props to them for that.

I am very big on buying American, and so I think it's important to see just where the companies are coming from and where the dollars are actually going.

^ Also to add.. Chrysler also holds our tax dollars right now (just as they did many years ago and paid it all back with interest). So we need to hope they survive also. Chrysler also has a HUGE amount of vehicles that contain a very high domestic parts content so they are still a major contributor in retrospect to the American workforce.

We just started calling back workers from the Chrysler bankruptcy. When they went out, we had people laid off within the hour. Now, we are calling some back and hopefully all of them back very soon, lights are getting turned back on and machines/people making parts.

Hopefully it is a sign of good stuff to come. WE ALL need this economy to keep getting better.

I personally think the reason we are seeing the domestic parts content falling is because of the competitiveness that is forever increasing. Outside places (such as mexico and japan) are coming at domestic automakers more than ever before producing parts cheaper than they can get them made in the USA for various reasons. In order to survive, some of these domestics are starting to include these discounted parts to cut costs.

We are our own worst enemy. Everyone wants our country to thrive, but everyone wants their stuff cheap cheap cheap and don't give a **** where it came from. I have noticed that it seems more and more people are noticing and caring, which is a great thing. Buy the most american you can.. that is the best you can do.

ACM - how true it is, people want everything for nothing. When I go to buy something and there's a foreign (jap or china) product and a US product, I will 99% of the time buy the product made in the US. To me, it's just better quality, and to see our flag on it makes me think that I AM helping out the Americans by spending the couple of extra dollars on a product that's worth it. But sometimes there's no choice, so what do you do? I just wish more of the American companies could've survived to keep producing products. I always hate seeing "Made in the USA, assembled in Mexico". Like we can't assemble that here? What a put-down....all for a couple of pennies.

It's becoming a throw-away world and that's sad. Why would you want to spend $50 on something that you have to replace every year, when you can spend, say $75 and have it for years to come?????? Are we really getting that cheap? I know money is tight for a lot of people, but save, manage, and you'll come out ahead.

Funny not too long ago I seen a short clip off of this site actually saying the most sold vehicle in the world was the Ford F-150 and then some ugly British bastard was bashing it because britich people dont make half decent trucks.

If you cant fix it with duct tape, tylnol, or band aids your screwed.

Holy Sh!t, wait a minute!!!! I missed that on the first read!!! So I should feel more patriotic driving something that says Toyota on it??? From a company that originated in Japan?!?!?! I don't think so. Should I fly the American flag UNDER the Japanese flag too?? And for their trucks, this may sound mean, but they haven't made a "real" truck until recently when they came out with their V-8. And Ford, GM, and Dodge has had a V-8 for.....how long?? In my mind, the foreigns are just "catching up" with what American companies have been doing for years and years now. And I would like to see a foreign V-8 push out the kind of Horsepower and Torque that the Americans have been making for years also. Have the Japanese companies ever made a 460? How about a 454? Didn't think so.

This past weekend, I was at a 4th of July party and one guy was bragging about his Volkswagen V-6 power...I just had to laugh and walk away. He asked us "How many American V-8's can produce torque and horsepower in the same range as his VW?" What a joke!! He should be shipped back to far-from-groovin' country for that remark!! I realize that some foreign cars make some pretty descent power, most can't do it without a hair drier attached.

I could go on and on about this, but point proven, American power all the way!!!!

To each his own. Like everything else, all manufacturers have their bad ones. I've owned many Fords and one G.M. product. Had great luck with the Fords, and couldn't stand the GM. Always fixing something on that one. Needless to say, I'll never own another G.M. again. It's all personal preference, just like your sleds....
