Some people around here know I'm completely obsessed with airplanes, mostly the Boeing 747 though. I've been constantly flying planes in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (Otherwise known as FS9) for years, using the default panels with add on planes from various websites.

Last week I bought an add-on plane from a payware website that simulates a real 747-400, from real aircraft systems and flight management computers and whatnot, it makes me think all the time I spent with default stuff was a waste. It came with an approximately 500 page manual and it was put together by people with ties to Boeing and is certified by Boeing. It's sweet. No more press "CTRL-E" to start the engines and take off. Now I actually have to make flight plans, calculate fuel loads and all that fun stuff. (I realize it's probably boring for most but I find it very interesting.)

I took some screenshots the other day flying from Dubai to Toronto in an old Canadian Airlines 747-400.

I know the gates aren't up to the plane in the pictures but that's a limitation of FS9. I believe FSX, the newest flight simulator has gates that connect and stuff but I don't like FSX. It's hard on frame rates and really isn't much better than FS9, I have both simulators and I still just use 2004. More addons for it and I'm used to it.

So P-Man,
Does this meen that you are looking at putting away the tractors for a pilot's licence?

I knew that you were into planes, and the 747 in particular when you were comparing them to an Airbus some damn model about a year ago.
Pretty cool stuff. Probably the most HP one could operate as a civillian.
That in and of it's self would do it for me.

Tried those simulators a while back, kept crashing when landing.

Here's my favorive, too bad it's decommissioned except for NASA use.

Are you able to fly one of these in that???

There are probably some SR-71 blackbirds out there for FS9 or FSX, but their FDE's are probably lousy and very un-realistic.

However if the model is good and that's all you're looking for, I'm sure you could find one easily at http://www.avsim.com (Their library is currently down... Whole other story there, but it's the best site out there, when it gets working again...) or at http://www.flightsim.com

I wonder if the flight simulators accurately portray the real life piloting of a SR-71 Blackbird, with it's "hours of sheer boredom interspersed with moments of sheer panic"? (quoted by an actual SR-71 pilot)

95 - Storm 800 - Modded - AKA: FrankenStorm - Totalled near 100mph at Tug Hill!
96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...
95 - RXL -- Sale Pending --
05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

Not yet...

It'd be cool to try some day though. Preferrably for fun and not out of necessity...

I too am hooked on flight simulators. I play fs9 and fsx a few hours a week on my system. I love them, though from what your now saying i may have to go more realistic and buy some add ons.

I have one questions for you jeff, so on your flight from Dubai to Toronto, does that mean you have sit by your computer for the acutal amount of hours the real flight takes??? Just curious...as if that is the case, i don't think it would be for me! Looks very interesting I must say!

Ive had some fun with some cheesy flight sims and stuff, but what I used to do alot was Locomotive simulators. That was until my dell crapped out and i was left with a hand me down mac which no one makes a decent train simulator for. But, i have tried x-plane since then which is actually really good. You can fly an osprey which is the vertical takeoff cargo plane, and a bunch of other fun stuff.

But, my favorite part about the train simulator that i had (Trainz 2006) was that there are so many high quality addons for it. You can control high tech diesel electrics all the way to (my favorite) geared steam locomotives like the shay, heisler, and climax. I was addicted, heres some screenshots from it:

That train thing looks pretty good, Jonesie, the 747 I have is the PMDG 747-400, available at http://www.precisionmanuals.com.

Darin, you don't have to fly it real-time, once I get to cruise altitude I usually put it on 8X speed and then browse the web on my laptop or watch TV or something, if an alarm dings for whatever reason I quickly hit "alt" to open the menu and pause the simulator, put it back to "normal" time, fix whatever dinged, then put it back on 8X. The flight from Dubai to Toronto took about 3 hours of real-time.

That's a long one though, I usually do un-realistic short flights since prep, takeoff and landing is 99% of the fun. Cruise is boring. However the long flights are more realistic, means you can take off with way higher weights due to large fuel loads and more chance of "failures" to occur, meaning something to do. Depends what's going on in real life I guess.

That looks pretty cool. I forgot that i bought FSX over the winter and found it the other day. It almost made me go buy an external harddrive or a new PC because it takes up 15GB and my PC only has 36 usable GBs. I deleted every game except Rigs of Rods, most of my pictures, and cleaned up my whole PC and got it on. Now i have 4gb open on my harddrive. Overall its a good game, but my PC is to old and outdated to run the game smoothly. Ive thought about buying FS9 and running it. Id like to get a couple payware planes but i doubt my PC would like it and im pretty sure my dad would tell me no. It sure beats Flight Sim 96 and 98 though, which i used to play until i got the Combat Flight Sims.

Thanks P-man i will have to check that link out. What type of controls do you use? I run stick/throttle set up from saitek and really need to get a set of pedals. I also run my game on a 2 screen setup, one i use to switch throught the screens and one set on just instruments most of the time.

cheers

Since I'm cheap I just use a Logitech joystick... So much for realism...

I am planning on adding another monitor now as this 747 has so many panels and whatnot, I'm already tired of toggling them on and off. I want to get a yoke, throttle quadrant and pedals eventually, but that stuff all costs $ I don't have. There's some cool stuff out there like actual radio stacks and whatnot as well, but lordy they are expensive.

I also purchased FSBuild along with the PMDG plane as flight planning with MSFS's flight planner and getting it imported into PMDG's FMC didn't work so hot. Using FSBuild you can make your route and save it as a FS9 flight plan and a PMDG FMC Flight plan, load them both then everything mingles well.

What do you usually fly? I hope not the default planes that come with FS because they are horrible... hahaha

Also if you look into payware airports, I have a few, the nicest ones I have would be KSFO (San Francisco), TNCM (Phillipsburg St. Maarten), KMIA (Miami) and OMDB (Dubai). These are all from flytampa and they look really good. I also have KBOS from Flytampa, which is freeware for some reason, it's awesome though and I'm not gonna complain. KMIA has issues with the ILSes for the runways, there is an AFCAD that fixes it on avsim, but avsim is still down.

Other than that, I have freeware sceneries for CYWG (Winnipeg) and CYYZ (Toronto) that are pretty good. I want to get the FSDreamteam sceneries sometime but they are very hard on frames, I don't like landing when everything is jerky. I don't have a weak computer either...

The speakers were just placed there before I set up new monitor. No rhyme or reason, it was open space on my desk so that's where they went for the time being. Not sure where to put them now...
