Just bought an 04 proxr440 with an 04 prox2 800 motor with vforce3 reeds swapped in. Just looking for some info since this is style of sled is all new to me. Things to watch out for? What breaks, what to upgrade, replace, etc. I keep hearing about the VES valves on these motors? How to adjust the walker evans? Any help/tips is appreciated, just throw out anything you've learned! Thanks

How many miles are on the engine? The main bearings in these 800's tended to go out every once in a while. It was hit and miss though. You should also replace the VES valves with stainless steel ones your you'll probably find that they like to break off and fall into the cylinder. Not a good thing . It has happened to me. The walker evans shocks are probably in need of a rebuild. That year, in particular, had durability issues (IMO). Check out http://www.diamondshocks.com to get them rebuilt. They are site supporters and do great work, especially on walker evans and the rates are great.

Thanks Erick, always good to get some tips from a guy like you! It has under 2000 miles he said, but with no odo its hard to tell. When he bought the motor the compression was low so he rebuilt the top end and now has 150psi on both cylinders, and the shocks were rebuilt at the same time, both with under 250 miles on them since rebuild. Where can I find the stainless VES valves? How much do they cost? Also, is there anything you can do to prevent the main bearing from going out? Thanks! anyone else chime in as well.

Definatly do as Erick suggested.
from there, clean those exhaust valves yearly so that they don't stick.
Gaskets for them are about $4 or $5 each and they are not that hard to clean.
Be sure to lay out the springs and baffels in order the way they came out to be able to get them back in right.

The crank issues on those is hit and miss.
They normally have gone out around 3,000 miles on the 800's I've seen here.
Tough Boy bearing kits do wonders for that.

With good maintenence and care, that will be a great sled for quite some time.
Enjoy

Oh and once you get the stainless ones is it basically guaranteed they wont fail, or just less chance? Do you still take them off and clean them every season?

I presume you bought the one off HCS, if you did the valves have already been upgraded.

Yes, you still clean them every year,
sometimes twice if you are running a ton of miles or running blue oil.
The stainless ones won't break though.
You are basically buying them to not have to dump out over a grand to fix it later.

okay he said he thinks the previous owner upgraded the valves, but he wasnt positive...anyone have a part number so i can double check and be sure?

also when i sit on it and get off, it stays like around 2 inches down from completely up, i have to pick it up the last 2 or so inches, is that normal it doesnt come ALL the way up by itself?

That's normal for Polaris.
They normally have about that in sag.
In the DH bike world it refered to as negetive travel and is actually good for when you go over holes etc.

i'm glad someone finally bought that sled up. post up some pics

Owning a race sled is like having a totally hot girlfriend..... All of your friends want to see it, feel it and check it out..... They all want to know what it is like to ride it, but if they only knew how much time and money it takes to keep one up, they would call you a fool!

Nevermind just read the listing. Looks like you got a great deal on it, how much did you end up getting it for if you don't mind sharing that?

look inside the belly pan at the mounts and make sure the tube that the bolt goes is nice and solid you will see what i mean when you look at them you might have to take the can off the one side to see them

looking at the outside of the sled with the hood closed i can see the can side (where my right foot would be on the sled) trailing arm bolt is very crooked. should i loosen it and try to get it back in straight on or does that mean somethings broken in there? whats the problem you mentioned with these?

the problem is that there is a flat plate with some round tubing that goes into the tunnel sort of and a long bolt goes from the outside of trailing arm inside the tunnel. what happens as it did on mine the tube broke lose from that plate and started putting extra stress on the tunnel.

ok check that link this is sorta what happend to mine but you will get the idea what to look for.

Ive had some real fun with those trailing arm bolts. Get that checked out for sure, they are a real pain in the a** to get everything back together right. At least, on the sled i was workinb on.

Really nice sled, would love to have it, and a great deal at that. Congrats.
