So im replacing the motor in my black truck. I already pulled the motor and i bought a target master 350 motor. Im just about ready to drop it in. But i have a question. Does the torque converter need to line up to the transmission shaft in any special way so it seats right? Or should i just slide it right on? I was told by my boss that some pins need to line up or something??? I dont know. The tranny is a 700r4 in a 1988 gmc 1500. also when i go get that squared away how do i fill up my torque converter with atf? Do i just pour atf down the tranny dipstick tube to get it in there? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the torque converter just slips on. also you full up the torque converter half full with atf right down the opening where it slides on to the trans. afer that check your trans fluid level after initial warm up an such... any more questions dont hesitate to ask.

Do i keep the torque converter on the starter gear? Or do i unbolt it from that and slide in on the shaft before i install the motor?

The converter does NOT just slip on. You have to slip the converter onto the trans input shaft then turn it as you push it onto the trans. It should slip in at least 3 times before it's all of the way in. Be VERY careful so you don't damage the converter seals.
When installing the trans, it should slip onto the 2 pins that are on the block. Do NOT pull the trans. onto the engine with the bolts. If the trans. does not go onto the engine all the way, you don't have the converter in the trans. all of the way. Good luck and take your time. You can break the trans. pump real easy.

What greasemonkey said. The input and output shaft seals aren't leaking? Would be nice to change them now. Most people only change them if they are leaking. I like to change them if they have some miles on them, when I have a trans out.

^^+2. and if the converter is empty you'll want to dump a quart in it before sliding it into the transmission.
