Like the title say i am i need of upgrades to the desktop. First off my cpu is dying i have lost all abilitiy of overclocking my pentium 4 3.2ghz. It now refuses to be overclocked to the 3.93ghz i had it at. I know this is due to heat build up and has basically taken years of use off the cpu.

Now my current specs are:
Pentuim 4 3.2gz
gigabyte mother board s-series supports up to a quad cpu
geforce 8800gts 1gb overclocked
1-320gb hard drive partitioned off, 80gb for o/s and programs rest for music, pics and various files.
1-120gb raptor drive(10,000rpm) this used only for games.
1000watt antec power supply
antec 900 case
and 8gb of ram.

Now my budget is pretty open as i get to write off 80% of this to work. My main plan was to get a new cpu and possible motherboard. I have been looking at the intel i7 the mid line model or intels core 2 extreme qx9775. I am just not sure if which one fits my needs best of if its worth going to the i7. I am also planning on going to a water cooled system since heat seems to be my biggest enemy and the my home office temp can actually rise over 10+ degrees celsius when gaming. I am going to water cool the cpu, ram and video card as well as partially duct the ac vent in the office direct to the intake fans, this shoudl basically solve my heat problem.

Now this my seem like over kill i know but i would like some advice. I spent about an hour talking to a local tech company and told them my specs and problems i have with my current setup. first thing the tech guy mentioned was heat. He said that no matter what i put in the case heat would quickly shorten its life. I would like some opinion on what others think. As i mainly use my computer for gaming and work and really dont wnat to go to over board.

I am also going to get another 10,000 rpm drive for just my o/s and programs to run off of hopefully speeding up everything at the sametime.

Any suggestions?

1st of all, don't overclock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's a easy way to make your cpu faster, but just go out and buy a BIGGER cpu, instead of wrecking the one you have.
2nd, Colder the Better!!!!! FANS FANS FANS!!!!! I have 2 120's and a 80 Blowing in and 2 80's sucking out, not including the ps fans! There is actually air blowing out of my side vents! Yes heat will kill just about every component off in a pc. Really no need for water cool in my mind, unless you don't like fan noise. I was a big gamer a couple years ago, I was OC'ing everything too. Fans do the trick.
There's my 2cents.
Goodluck

Overclocking can shorten the life span of a CPU. But I say go for it anyway, I usually never keep a CPU long enough to care if the life span is shortened.

I used to be a hardcore PC overclocker gamer back in the day. I was #60 something on the 3dmark2001 highest score list for a short time back in 03. That was on an aircooled rig with a mobile 2500+ overclocked to 2.73 which was pretty crazy back then on a athlon xp CPU. I don't even follow any of that stuff any more though. Heres a screen from 03. Brings back memories. That was some crazy voltage! Also my sig pic back then which also brings back memories. Its crazy how things have changed since then. Believe it or not, when I parted out that system, the Mushkin level II memory was in such demand by overclockers that I sold it on ebay for $550!

I have tried air cooled, its just not working i have a total 6 fans in my case 5 of which are 120mm and one 200mm on the top. I can not get enough cooling with that so water cooling is the next step up for me. I also kow over clocking kill cpu life but at the time it was easier to do then buy a new cpu. My next cpu will not be overclocked with out water coolng it at least.

if you don't mind spending the coin why not go i7, its a quick chip. as for O/C if you do it right and keep temps down then you will be ok, differnt model cpu's in the same family and stepping are normally the same thing just one chip tested better then the other one is considered "higher" quality and given a higher multiplier. water cooling is nice, but just make sure you test the crap outa the system before you install it lol. its better to find leaks sooner then later.

Lol i would love to but i need something to keep me busy during the off season i call "work". Another thing im not in a cash saving mode right now my debt card seems to have problem staying in the wallet, since i bought all new camping equipment and a boat this year and soon a ring to make the g/f my legitamate wife.

Haydays should not be a problem for me this year. Not sure i will buy anything other then small things but i should be able to make the trip down.

cheers
