Making my own tile backsplash with this

within the next 2 weeks. What do I need? I am aware of a tile cutter (that thing with the wheel)

Tile saw, grout trowel, grout, and measure 3 times and cut once!!!

It's really not that hard to do. I did my whole shower and it turned out nice.
Make sure you have a good backer board. I used the concrete backer board.
I also cheated and bought those little tile spacers that look like a x, worked real nice for even spacing. The hardest part was getting the grout all cleaned up after.
Good luck.

I've had some bad luck with tile cutters(the scribe type), want mine??? What I ended up using is a cheap (about $15.00) 4 1/2 inch diamond blade on my angle grinder. Sure it's messy, but the cuts are a lot better and you can do inside corners and such with them.

Spacers, trowel to match the adhesive, the adhesive, grout, something to apply the grout with. It's pretty easy and goes real fast.

Here's mine, just not quite finished yet. Have to find some time.

Matt,
I agree with most of what greasemonkey said. You really need a grout squeege. Looks sort of like a trowel but is full rubber on the bottom. That is a must if you are doing back splash work. You don't really need the spacers unless you are looking for a large grout line or are using tile that is not specifically backsplash tile (sorry, I could not open your link here at work).

Backsplash tile has built in spacers that give you that 1/8" line. Now here is the MOST important thing if you are using backsplash tile DO NOT USE SANDED GROUT!!!!!!!! You will work most of the grout right out of the crease and it WILL look like crap!! If you are using the spacers, sanded grout should work fine.

And get a trowel that matches the recommendation for the adhesive you will be using. If you are buying at HD, they will get you everything you need.

I agree the hardest part is the clean up. We just tiled my room, and our laundry room in about the same color as you posted matt. Get the little x things they save alot of time.

Thanks for the tips guys! I will keep you updated. Have the dining room torn apart right now (installed lots of drywall and filled and old closet (now a wall). Granite countertops are going in within 2 weeks and I am doing the backsplash then but I am buying everything I need this week.

I want to tile in in a diamond pattern if that makes sense. I am just worried about the special cuts i will have to do around my windows that might not be a straight line.. I mean like down an inch, and left an inch. A tile cutter won't do that.. at least the tile cutter I am thinking of

The diamond pattern should look good.
Get a diamond blade like I had said before. They do a great job. Here's an example with no breakage.

The thin strip next to the cabinet is only 3/8" wide and is still attached to the bigger piece underneath. Just be careful, and it'll work out good!!

The 4 1/2" ones you should be able to pick up for $20 or less, a larger one for a radial arm saw could get expensive. You got a hand angle grinder?

If you cut tile dry, make sure you do it in the garage or outside. It will be very fine dust and will work its way into everything depending how much you have to actually cut. Some blades are designed to only cut wet. Very short life if you cut dry.

Worked 3 years as a tile setter, i will NEVER use a scribe cutter, just not worth it. Diamond blades are awesome if you can stand the dust.

recommend a mask and some good goggles to keep the dust out of your mouth and eyes. another thing to keep in mind is take your time, thinset wont setup in 5 sec like some think it does. and when it does you better hope everything is in the right place.

also like stated, use unsanded grout and when you do the grout, do one section, then do another on the other side of the counter, then go back to the previous section and wipe the tiles. found that usually worked the best.

I called the rental place. Wet Saws- Do those cut granite tiles? Or ceramic? or Porcalean*?
I can rent a small one from the rental place for 45 a day.. or the big one for 55 a day. I think I have seen these for sale for 100 bucks? If the rental fee is 1/2 the new fee I will go buy one brand new.
Suggestions?

The decision is in. I am doing granite 12x12 tiles for my backsplash grouted with black grout. I looked at the rentable saws for 50 bucks and the saws I can buy for 100. HUGE difference. I will be renting a saw haha.

^ Too bad you were not closer!

The dollar store has closeouts from places. Right now they have wallboard adhesive for tiling. 1 dollar a gallon! Do I want it?

I would do a test with the stuff, ake sure its good since it is from the dollar store. Let it set completely, and give it a workout, see how it does. That should give you an idea.

Look under Tile & Stone Installation systems.
then either under Mastics and type 1

or Dryset Mortars and Kerabond.

those are the two i'd recomend
