I have heard of guys using an oven cleaner to get all build up off your exhast valve other wise a some what fine wire brush and some sort of parts cleaner works with a little bit of elbow grease!

remove bolts, pull out, might want new gaskets, if not make sure not to rip gasket or bellow. I ususlly let them soak in carb cleaner and scrub off with rag or if really dirty (use amsoil interceptor) and use a green scotch pad!

TAKE THOSE BOLTS OUT AND UNDER THAT COVER IS A SPRING AND DIAPHRAM THEN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SLIDE YOUR EXHAUST VALVE OUT. ALSO REPLACE YOUR GASKET.

Might just be THAT gunked up if you are having trouble pulling them. But no need to disassmble the bellows from what I see. I have yet to do this actually. Gonna do it on my Dad's 02 XC tonight probably.

Some would recommend NOT to use scour pads, scrubbing the valves with a rough surface will wear away any sort of coating that may have been on them from the factory which would make them build up faster next time. Best thing to do is just to soak the parts in cleaner for a long period of time or in several stages and then gently wipe away the residue.

I did the ones in my Dad's 02 XC and my 08 Shift last night. The **** inside the bellows area was NASTY oil that is still all under my nails. I used a plastic bristle pad on a 90* die grinder to clean the slides. Coating is gone if there was one, ha.

Green pad is as soft an any shop rag, with a little texture to more build up. No damage can be done by using a green pad. Anything more course isn't recommended!

Is there any recommended amount of miles that this should be done. I may be keeping my 800 and trading the 600 in for a rush. If I keep the 800 I may do this too.

I'm sure it depends on the type of gas and oil you use, you could always just take them out and check them. ^^^^

I did the same thing^^ They were a bitch to get cleaned. I used oven cleaner, engine parts cleaner and carb cleaner. It got a lot of the gunk off but I went to a steel wool brush and scraped the carbon off with a screw driver carefully. Worked good.

i was going to spray it then let it sit for awhile with oven cleaner but i read the can and it said "Warning: Corrosive" so i didn't know if that was the best idea.

I started working on my sled last week and saw this topic. I also decied to clean them since i never had before boy was it a good idea! In the process I found where my coolante has been going. Found small droplets in one of the valves. Removed the head to find blowen head gaskets. Here some pics of my dirty valves...
