id do alot of technical riding like logs, hill climbs, rocks, and alot of trail riding. i think that the 450 would work better for this, but i dont know yet. i figure that when whatever bike i get breaks, it will cost less to get a 2-stroke fixed, but the smooth power of a 4-stroke might be worth the trade off. if i need to, i could always gear down the 250. it will have to be a used bike, because i can only spend around $2000 on one. what does everyone think about this? what would you do, and what bike would you get?

buddy of mine just got a '03 YZ 250F (4 stroke) and it is wicked fast. He said he's going to get rid of it cuz it is just too much power for him. he's just not used too that much power...too funny...if you lived closer you could pick this one up under 2k and it's beef up.. good luck

too much power from a 250f? i already have an 84 xt 250 4-stroke. i know its not as powerful as that yz, but i want more power than it has. thats why im looking at the 250 2-strokes and the 450 4-strokes.

250 for me, You have to be a pretty darn good rider to be able to ride the 450 to there full potential. ie the lights 250 class.

Here's the way i look at it.
I have a 2006 yamaha Yz250 (VF3 reeds, Race-Tech Suspension Tag Clamps and Pro Taper Bars)
My buddy has a 2006 Yz450F (Two Brothers Exhaust and Now a Race-Tech suspension)
closest thing your are going to get to a straight comparison (models have almost identical setups)
Hill climbing:
450 will beat me by a half bike length up the hill << watch the end
that and if you don't make it the 250 is so much easier to turn around (being in at 211 lbs)
Maintenance:
Both bike require their respective maintenance. 250 requires the tranny fluid to be drained regularly cause there is no filter on it, 450 requires the engine oil to be changed a lot, especially if you do hard riding. 250 requires you to pre-mix the gas, 450 requires constant attention on the valves as a precaution. a complete topend rebuild on the 250 (Piston, rings, and gaskets) will cost just about if not less then a 450 piston AND you can do it in your garage with simple tools.
Track:
No question about it the 250 is so much more fun to ride at the track, demands you to be on your game to ride it fast and it is ADDICTING. the 250 is very light (211 lbs compared to the 450 at like 237?) ya know that doesn't seem that much, but the 250 has such a low center of gravity cause the motor has no cams or gyro effects from the valve train and it sits lower in the frame that it just is so easy to move around and it doesn't have that arm ripping torque right off the get go, so it's easy to track how the bike is going to handle.
woods:
250 hands down, it's so easy to move around in tight spots, just need a spark arestor. 450 is good, but the weight and higher center of gravity and massive torque

MX covered it all. Although I don't think that you will get a nice 250 or 450 for 2 grand. Is this your first bike?

You should be able to get a nice 2 stroke for under 2000. A 450 4-stroke would be very hard to get for that price.

if you are doing that i doubt you would want a 450(my opinion balancing and so on. Try to test drive a 2 and 4 stroke to see difference in feeling to get better idea.

if you do a lot of techinical stuff in 1st-2nd gear a lot, you're going to want the 4 stroke. i have an xr400 and my buddy has a yz250, he hates his unless we find a straight away or some nice powerlines, in the tight woods there's no comparison between the two, sounds like you belong on a 4 stroke.

I would definitely say 4 stroke for your. "technical riding like logs, hill climbs, rocks, and alot of trail riding" those are all where a 4 stroke shines with its broad powerband and grunt. Don't go for an MX tuned 4-stroke though, you want an enduro type. I only know yamahas models really well but the WR450 would be a great choice. Power from the bottom up, is great when the trails get tight, and will just be easier to ride all around. The less work riding is the more fun it will be.

I personally went with 4 stroke and got rid of my 2 strokes. Especially with my quad, SO much easier to pull up to the pump fill up and go no need to worry about mixing gas. I dont know about reliability but IMO 4 stroke is the way to go. And its all about the torque baby, cant beat em, power on demand!!

my friend had an rmx 250 2-stroke, so i know how they are. but what is wrong with getting something like a crf 450? i havent seen any 450s with headlights on them for the amount i can spend.

The YZ is not a woods bike.
Apples to apples.
Compare that XR out to a WR 2 stroke or to an MXC 300, something along those lines, and you will find a much closer comparrison.

How many of you have ridden the same year same model line dirtbike in both 2 and 4 stroke versions with suspensions setup for you.....
unless you have you can not compare the two.

I would buy a 2 stroke just because it is easier to move around, I would gear it down because you can not compete with the traction that a 4 stroke can produce on any surface.

Grey wire does not make it into a YZ.
There are some definate differences, WR has a wide ratio tranny where the YZ has a close ratio, WR has a heavier flywheel making it product better torque, WR has a lighting stator, suspension is set up differently.
They really are 2 different bikes.

Ive ridden my friends 450 4 stroke, i cant remember what brand it was, but ive also ridden a bunch on my cousins ktm 250 exc 2 stroke and as far as a woods bike a 250 is way better, i can say that the fourstroke gets insane traction when compared to a 2, but when it comes to goin through the woods, goin over technical rock sections and such the lighter 250 is the way to go because of its agility, and especially if you tip it over on a really gnarly rock section.
Just my opinion though, im not a big dirt bike buff so take it for what its worth.
