I watch lots of skipping water videos on youtube.
Many are cool. Many lose their sleds too
I am wondering if its ok to do it with your sled?
Have you ever tried it?
Lost it?
And LOL would you recommend it?

It doesn't hurt your engine unless you sink. Even then they usually start up again but I am sure it shortens the life of it. I wouldn't recommend going across a 40ft deep lake, but it is defiantly fun going across sloughs and stuff. I would NOT recommend doing it with a 340 enticer.

Current Line Up
-09 RMK Assault
-06 IQ R 600HO
-01 ProX 600
-95 XCR 600

Days get shorter, snow gets deeper, life gets better.

My friend sunk his MXZ 670 multiple times. Eventually all the sleds electrical connections and bearings, etc were shot

I have a 98 xc 700 that is setup for watercross it skips water really good, the only reason I do not use it for winter, is that this 700 likes to go through pistons I know 700's do not go through pistons a lot but mine does so I use it for water. those domestic/liberty's work really good.

1998 Polaris Indy 500 chassis with 98 Xc 600 motor
SLP ceramic coated pipe with SLP can
V-force reeds
4 inch pivot riser
Gutted Air Box
EPI clutch kit soon to be installed
Maybe some pro tapers

1998 XC 700 water-cross sled
SLP twin pipes
Some light weight parts
Water-cross mods include taking the parts u do not need
This includes removing the seat replacing gas tank and IFS bars.

I do it on a regular basis, doesn't hurt the machine. It's when you start getting cocky and try to show off is when you go down. Had one close call doing that, luckily climbed back up on the other side of the hole, barely! But, later that day I ended up going down anyway, LOOK OUT FOR THIN ICE!!!

Whatever you do, if you go down, shut your motor off before its hits the water.

One thing we did to the "waterskipper" (polaris 600 triple) was tied a string onto a mt. dew bottle in case she did go down we would know where it is.

Water skipping is fun and all, but I suggest doing it in summer. I had a friend almost drown in the winter! And like somone said above, eventually the water takes a toll on your electrical parts.

That hits it on the head right there. Just not something I do on the mountain sled very often.
Normally a stream or small pond here and there is about it, normally out of necessety a couple times a season,
I would add the reasons I think it shortens engine life.
I think the largest reason is the engine expanding with running temps and then the rapid cool down.
The next bad things are the obvious water ingestion issues and water does not compress in the motor the way fuel does. It all has to be drained.
From there all the lube joints, water in the fuel, water in the oil.

There is another side to all of this too though.
Lake racing.
Build a sled for lake racing that doesn't go out in the snow and this all becomes another story.
There are sanctioned races for that and I do like racing in general.
