Any of you utilize this stupid program?
Why did I say stupid? Because I look at it like this.. It is a program where the government pays Mary to buy a Japanese car all the while the government bailed out the american car makers with my tax dollars.
If our tax dollars are paying for this program, it should have included the catch of domestic cars only or something. Seems stupid that our tax dollars were used to loan big auto makers, then we pay people that buy vehicles that were not made by those automakers.
But regardless, curious who took advantage. I know 2 people that qualified, one is taking it, one is not.

Not only is what matt said true, but I would never trade my perfectly good pickup and watch them dump sodium silicate in the motor to ruin it permanently. I would probley take less on regular trade then to let them do that to it. Dumb

Exactly
Thing that pisses me off is that alot of people are trading in decent (and sometimes very decent) vehicles that get junked by the dealers, why trash a perfectly good vehicle? what should happen is after the dealer gets this perfectly fine vehicle on trade is take a family who has a real clunker, like an 1986 cutlass with a missing hubcap that drones louder than a glasspack on a 4cyl and trade that for the running vehicle, and smash the junker.
That would make a whole lot more sense than what were doing now, and help take more clunkers off the road, but everyone knows this program was nothing more than a goverment idea to help boost goverment motors after going down the hole.

We were talking about this at the family reunion this weekend. Not a single person there thinks its a good idea. One thing that my dad said, which is pretty funny, is that all of the new car advertisements were about the cash for clunkers, but they ran stopped it because they couldnt really track the money that they spent. So instead of being doing something smart and stopping it, they dumped two more billion into it.
Lets just pour more money down the drain, do stupid things but make it sound like its good and working, lie to people, and make me pay for it. Somebody has to pay for all this stupid crap, and it will be me.

My grandparents might utilize the program. We have a '89 Chevy 1500 that is in pretty rough shape. All the quarter panels are rusted out, hood and front fenders were replaced at one time and don't quite fit right (time wasn't taken to align them properly). Motor and trans are about shot. We currently use it for a farm beater/field truck. They are contemplating trading it in for a new Silverado 1500. They currently have a 02 Silverado 1500, which I will probably buy from them if/when they get a new one.

Why not?? It's a TRADE-IN!! Another way to screw us!!!
Quote:
The CARS Act specifies that while many parts of the trade-in vehicle
are permitted to be removed and sold, in the end the residual vehicle, including the
engine block, must be crushed or shredded.
So, they can sell some of the parts from the vehicle, but some engines are getting hard enough to find already, this will just make it even harder for the hobbyist.

The really dumb part is that you get a choice of trade-in value or the "up to $4500" gov't program. It's not a $4500 added on to your trade in value type thing, so really the only people doing good on it are those driving (or at least having the vehicle registered throughout time) vehicles worth less then $4500 in the first place. Not saying everyone is like this, but I would be willing to bet the people driving $2000 cars are probably not going to easily afford to make new car payments and full coverage insurance to go along with the purchase. Like I said I realize that's not everyone's situation.
So IMO, they are trying to solve a problem caused by gov't/companies/people overspending and being in mass debt, by putting more consumers in debt and finacially tying them down on a car payment instead of being able to stimulate the economy on a broader range.
Yep, makes perfect sense to me! Thank God for the change that was promised.

My mom and dad (both retired) turned their old van in. It needed about 3K in repairs if my dad and I did the work ourselves. They bought a Pontiac. Could not talk my mom out of it. Now she doesn't really like the model she picked out. Women!

Same here, I'm not even going to type what's going through my mind!!!
A little work, that would've been a pretty nice car again, and for a lot less then a new one!!!!
What a crock!!!!!
Edit: Thanks, I just had to watch some more. There's some pretty nice cars they are trashing. They aught to have their f@#^*n' heads bashed for this!!!!!!!!!!
I realize some people do not care about their old cars, but I'm a car freak to the extreme and hate to see this done to something that has potential to be really nice again.

So what's the deal with destroying the engine but scrapping out the rest? That's alot of chevy 350's and 454's going to the junk yard in the sky. What a shame to waste such great motors.

Completely stupid program, they should be reselling these vehicles instead of parting out some things and then just crushing the body frame and motor. My brother-in-law works at a dealer and he said there is this perfect later 90's truck that is going to get put through this program. And in the end it will be crushed. How stupid they should resell that vehicle and get some more money moving, because I'm sure more than one good cond. vehicle will end up crushed.

I took advantage of it. Traded our old work truck, a 94 2wd 3/4 ton chevy with 250,000, in for a 09 Gmc Sierra 1/2 ton 4wd ext cab. Kind of a shame as it still ran decent but why wouldnt you trade it in if there gonna give you 3500 for an old wore out truck. I see why some might not like the program but I think it is doing one hell of a job with the new car sales. And not just the people who are eleigable. It has also gotten people who thought they might be eleigable out to the dealers and looking at and buying new cars.

i seen a few pics from a local dealer of a 99 ford explorer, mint, 70k on it. i would love to have it as i need a winter truck, but no its gonna be a cube of steel now. i dont have 15k+ to go buy something, and i definitely aint gonna spend that much on a winter vehicle. thanks Government for killing off a good number of winter beaters for me, pricks. also there was a line of great running late model rangers next to the explorer, all 4wd that are now dead. ugh.

I had no idea they were destroying the motors in these cars, I thought they just got a good trade in then were recycled. I was gong to go to a dealer and find some of these "clunkers" and get one for myself for a hundred bucks or something to beat the hell out of in the field behind my house. I'd get more enjoyment out of that then anything, and I could think of a few people who could even use some of these "clunkers" since there in better shape than the cars they drive. What a load of s**t, destroying perfectly good cars.
EDIT: I'm thoroughly pissed off now after seeing numerous cars destroyed on youtube. When those rods fly out of those engines, i wish it would hit some people, making destroying the engines "dangerous", and therefore cannot be done any longer. That would make my day, no, week, or even my month.

My local dealership was on national news the other day. They ran out of cars because of the program. I think they sold over 100 cars in like 5 hours. Wew shall see what reprecautions come out of needing to pay back an extra 3 billion dollars. People are saying around here its al about better fuel mileage, which would explain why japanese dealerships are being targeted.

Thats the only explanation for crushing all the old beaters that don't get anything for mileage, it still makes me mad though because some vehicles they crush are pretty nice.

True.
My biggest question is what is goign to happen when people cant pay back the loans they signed to buy new cars.
