You may getter better gas mileage. But those old beat up trucks are polluting the air. No offense.

OK so I have heard my grandpa say over and over again about how he used to get over 30 mpg back in the day and that was with a boat of a car. And my physics teacher said the cars were made more efficient before and it was only due to a change in laws that they dropped in efficiency my 1990 F-150 has a 300 I-6 and I get around 18-20 on the highway my dads 05 chev 1500 was rated for 14 on the highway new.

And as far as global warming goes so far imop we don't know enough about our planet or our universe to make all kinds of decisions. I'm not saying that any kind of pollution is good or that we shouldn't care about it but to me I don't believe they know what there talking about and too much of there data seems to be guesswork to me.

plus I'm not sure if I've heard correct but my understanding is after they melt them down we ship em to china for them to re-smelt the steel into something new which to me really doesn't seem to be helping the iron mining economy which in my area is a very big deal

so for me i don't think they could pay me enough to trade in a working vehicle and I've thought they at least should of made it so u can get only American made cars outta the deal

I'm torn on what to think about the C4C program. On one hand, there have been hundreds of thousands of new vehicle sold through the program and some Michigan manufacturers are actually going back to work for the short term. On the other hand auto sales will certainly be soft for the first six months after the program ends and this will adversely affect the economy.

I'm not in the market for another vehicle any time soon. I did like a friends theory: Wait a year and many of these C4C purchases will be available at repo sales. If it happens that way, maybe I'll update next year.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

It may be a good engine but its bad for the air if its a old car. The exhaust is polluting the air and global warming takes place

You believe that crap? I know there is climate change, i remember summers when it would get close to or over 100 here(im only 15). Now it never really gets close. We had one of the coldest stretch in winter in a while, the second coolest July ever recorded here(coolest was 1947). We set many record lows, and some of the lowest highs in July ever recorded here. Im not sure if we have set a single record high this year. Is the climate changing, yes. Do i think we are causing it,no , who knows what temperatures were 3-400 years ago? Nobody. Its a shame Al Gore and his guys won the nobel prize. Will it help air quality, probably a little bit.

At least the top selling car from this program is the Focus. Once again GO FORD!!

exactly it's all a big hype and a way for them to make money. Hell they have record temps of it being hotter 50 years ago in places! it's just the cycle of the earth. The earth is always changing there is absolutely no proof that we are causing "global warming" when there is no such thing.

My brother works at the local Ford dealer, i saw countless nice rigs, a 1998 chevy 3/4 ton Suburban, with a 454. 2002 Jeep grand Cherokee with brand new tires, and many other cars and trucks that were perfectly fine. All to get siezed up, and crushed for 50 dollars a car/truck to the local steel and scrap metal refinery. Atleast they could part the cars out, sell the motors, or something. It's just such a waste.

thats such a great idea so the stupid junk yards dont try to sell the motors. junk yards should be banned all together.

So, what are you smoking????

Apparently you have no likings for the older vehicles and don't appreciate them. A junk yard is not only a place of death, but a place for new life. I have restored several vehicles and used a lot of parts from junk yards. When I take my truck out, I get complimented every time!! Not possible without the junkyards.

Next time you feel like making such a stupid statement, just keep it to yourself!!!

Thats another good idea too. Something they could do. Sell the body but no they have to crush it up.
And I also read another comment on boosting sales on the new cars. Thats probably true.
It makes sense now

American's lose again!

Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan accounted for 41 percent of the new vehicle sales, outpacing Detroit automakers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, which had a share of nearly 39 percent. Toyota Motor Corp. led the industry with 19.4 percent of new sales, followed by General Motors Co. with 17.6 percent and Ford Motor Co. with 14.4 percent.

Hated this program from the beginning, I knew it would do nothing but prop up the foriegn's.

Please explain yourself, you are changing stories.

And where would you find some of the parts for your 1984 Chevy???

Best thing that can be said for the clunker program is that it generated alot of intrest in new car purchases. I work for a small rural dealership that sells less than 50 vehicles a year. When this program was announced, we were FLOODED with intrest and sold alot of vehicles. NONE under the program! The very few who's vehicles qualified couldn't get financed for the balance! Others found out their trade in was worth MORE than the $3500 or $4500. A larger dealership in this area sold 96 vehicles under the program, so far has been paid for 2 deals by the government! Of course, thats the type of efficiency we've come to expect from our government programs!

Sad thing is thats actually true. My brother has a 97 F-250 Powerstroke with 0 emissions junk on it. It smells like a real diesel motor when its running. It smells just like our 3020 when your lugging it up a hill and the exhaust is blowing right back in your face. Its a good smell.

You start up our 6.4 powerstroke and it about knocks you out. It smells like pure sulfur. Its got a 11ft utility bed on it so when you are getting stuff out of the bins while its running its all you smell. He bought 2006 F-250 with a 6.0 and he said it smells that way also. But it will have most of the emissions junk taken off sometime, so hopefully it smells better.

Anyways, i was very upset and mad today when we went car shopping. I saw a dealer ad for a 2000 Jeep Cherokee for 2 grandk, so we went to look at it. Of course it was sold by the time we got there. We ended up looking at a ZR2 Blazer and a 96 Powerstroke. While i was looking at those i saw a lot more used vehicles at the back of the lot, and i went and was looking at them. Thats when the salesman came up and said they werent for sale, they were cash for clunkers. There was 30 or 40 cars there, and im sure they had more somewhere. There were a couple of nice looking pickups, some broncos, and some other cars i was interested in. He said he saw a truck, didnt say any info about it other then miles, come in that had less then 100k miles, and looked brand new. He said the truck was worth more then 4500, but the owner gave it away for that. Today was the first day i got to see some of the trade ins, and its makes it look worse then before. Of course while i was at the dealer there were 4 or 5 cars there with Obama stickers. It might not be a bad concept to boost sales, but at least actually do something with the cars. Part them out or something. Not just toss them away like its nothing.

So after 3 billion gets spent I have to ask.

What has been accomplished?

What was the goal of the program?

Is the world a better place?

Has the temperature of the planet gone down?

Are the car manufacturers any more solid in their financial situations?

Who cares if cars are being destroyed. Look at how much logical sense this program makes beyond the needless destruction of motors. What kind of thought processes go on in a mind that creates and puts a program like this into action. Think about how many other ideas have been thought up and are being put into action by the same people.

If you think C4C has you P'OD just wait, we aren't even one year into this mess and there isn't any promise we will still have our nation after four years.

What happened with the cash that was spent, was that some time was bought for the economy to slow the spiral it was on... And it worked.

It gave the auto-makers a small infusion of cash, without just handing them millions to remodel their offices, throw parties, and pay bonuses.

It also gave a lot of dealers a survival mechanism in a time when car buying was the lowest in US history. In trickle down effect, it kept a lot of factories working, building parts.

In something you really wouldn't think about, it also gave an indirect infusion of cash to the insurance companies. As the majority the people that bought new cars, had to up their insurance coverage.

Has the temperature gone down? Now that's just an ignorant question to ask... Makes it sound like you're just spouting the rhetoric you hear on the radio.

As far as 1 year in, try less than 9 months.. And fighting partisan politics for every inch. There's no possible way that a full recovery can be made in 4 years when everything you try to do is undermined by well funded, politically disruptive, "grass roots" campaigns.. Like the "douche-bag" I mean "tea-bag" parties, and, of course the retaliation of the whackos screwing with Glenn Beck's advertisers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a tree-hugger I'm libertarian.. A real libertarian though, not one of the right wingers pretending to be one. I think the fringes on both sides are f-ed, and the 2 party system here needs to be updated, as well as A LOT of other things.

Oh, and 3 billion? How much are we spending a month in Iraq? It's about damn time we spent a few bucks on recovering the economy instead of hoping for future oil deals that only effect a few stockholders, and funding it with your and my taxes.

Ford, Toyota, Hyundai and Honda were the big winners as consumers snapped up their fuel-efficient cars. Rivals Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Co. endured another month of falling sales, although their high-mileage vehicles did better.

^ Sad isn't it? Our tax dollars were used as loans to american auto makers.. then the same people who's tax dollars are on loan to american makers, go and buy foreign.

They just gambled away their own money.

Last stat I read said the ford focus was the number one vehicle in the program?

This is what I found:
The Toyota Corolla was the most popular new vehicle purchased under the program, followed by the Honda Civic, Toyota Camry and Ford Focus. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said U.S. consumers and workers were "the clear winners" under the program.

Apparently Ford dropped to number 4 on the list....pretty sad.

Edit: Did some more looking, and this site says different.
