well today we went to a scrap yard to find a starter for a 1977 ford and me and my buddy seen this mint 87 camaro about to get scrapped. we started looking at it the body is absolutely mint 1 spot of surface rust, paint is totally faded.so i knew it had a 2.8l multi port motor and the interior was like brand new by the way lol.the scrap guy hands me the keys to see if it would start so i turned it over twice and the engine fired up.but it has a really bad knocking noise coming from the motor so we think it may be a rod.the guy only wants 400 for it and we are thinkin of goin halfs on it.but right now i really wanna know what else could be making it knock something simple or something very complicated?thanks

if it knocking and it prob spun a rod barring. those motors are not disierable at all in those cars. maybe if it had a 305 or a 350 in it, it would be worth 400 bucks but you could buy a 350 and throw it in just my 2 cents

It's a rod knock. all those 2.8s throw rods. best you could do (after having fun holding it to the floor until the rod flew out) is make it into a nice project by dumping in a small block.

I'd forget about it unless you've got some money to spend on a new motor.

you would have to find a donor car that had a v8 in it. lots of stupid little things need to be changed. radiator, exhaust, engine mounts, wiring, front springs, etc.

It's cheap, but can you get a clear title? Or has it been salvaged already?

Fix V-6 or drop in a V-8, still going to nickel and dime you to death.

Let it get crushed, third gens are nothing special. I always find it ironic how they will crush the car but once you show interest in it it's magically worth millions.

OR build a V6 like my 4.3.... As far as wiring is concerned, it's fairly straight forward.... They both use HEI dizzies, personally. I'd buy it, swap mounts, build a $600.00 377(Like the one I have, but cheap) Get a 400 block, bore it 30 over, get new pistons for $200(Hypereutectics), use ARP rod bolts, get a scat 350 cast crank, and that block is good for an easy 300 hp(Strength wise). As a matter of fact, i've seen scat cranks hold up to 7k rpm in short sprints. As far as heads get some 202's from a machine shop should be about $150-200 witha core, intake el cheaper edelbrock torker for $120.00, and you dont need a big carb 500 CFM at the most(Holley double pumper all the way). And, a pair of el cheapo summit headers for $80.00 ohh, and a cheap hydraulic flat tappet cam for another $90.00(including lifters). There's nothing wrong with summit parts if looking for a budget street engine.
