I would like your opinion on this. I just had my review at work, and was told I was doing a good job, but that I had to cover the tattoo on my right forearm. The tattoo has the letters U. S. M. C. above the outstretched wings of an Eagle perched on a dagger, which is going through a heart surrounded by red roses. There is a scroll with the words " Death Before Dishonor " wrapped around the heart. I got this tattoo shortly before leaving for Beirut in 1983. Now I realize they have a rule about not having tattoos visible while at work. I did not know this when hired, but I was wearing a suit at the time of my interview, so they were not aware I had it. I have been working there since may, and they just told me this, and I am sure others with tattoos were whining about this. As far as I know I am the only Veteran working at this Veterinary Clinic. I understand about playing by the rules and all, but I feel covering this tattoo would be dishonoring not just all my fellow Marines who have fallen, but every Fallen Servicemen and women who ever gave ALL for this Country ! I have other job opportunities, and could easily find other employment. So, what I am asking is : Am I over-reacting, or should I just go work at another Clinic. I am thinking that this may be a battlefield I am willing to die on ! What do you guys(and gals) think ?

I would first make sure you have other job opportunities, then sit down with your boss and explain how you feel. I would see how that conversation goes first, if it does not go well then you can look for another job.

cheers

I don't think that covering the tat to comply with company rules dishonors any one.
You make the desision though, but make sure that you have another job before quitting this one.

I agree that having a steady job is like having gold in this economy,

I would personally have a sit down with your boss, explain to him the actuall tatoo, what it means to you, and your comrads and that its not inapropriate in anyway, and how you would feel if you were to cover it.

If its not inapropriate, and it has a significant meaning in your life I don't see why the boss can't flex the rules a bit and understand your side.

If he says cover it I wouldn't quit unless I knew I had another job available, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and suck it up and let the man win.

What does he mean by cover it? Wear a long-sleeved shirt? If that's it, then I don't really see the problem, other than you might be a little on the warmer side due to wearing a long sleeved shirt...

Seems stupid to me, but I like tattoos... That's why all of mine are on my upper body, shirt covers all of them (for the most part, to cover the one on my collar bone and back of neck I have to wear shirts with collars)

From a fellow service man, I have to say I agree with StudentDriver. There would be no dishonor.

Do you work out where the public can see you? If not, maybe the clinic can modify the rules? Lots of places have rules like that. If you work with the public, cover the tats and piercings. I guess this is one of those decisions...

To clear things up a bit, I have several standing offers for employment, having a degree in any medical art ( human or veterinary ) puts you in demand, at least in this part of the country. I could wear a long sleeve shirt, I guess my point is I have had many jobs since 1983, including as a Police Officer,I have never been asked to cover my tattoo before. I don't think any of my patients object, I don't think anyone should have to cover their tattoos as long as they are not offensive, ie: a swastika, foul words, or tasteless displays of nudity. I remember when guys had to wear wigs to cover long hair so they could work at a grocery store ! I don't think anyone wants to go back to that. I do, however, understand how precious jobs are these days, and I hope I didn't offend anyone who is currently unemployed. I just don't think personal liberty or conviction are a luxury regardless of economic times. But you guys are making some great points !

I would think that it would only be a problem if they had some sort of rules before you were hired or before you got the tattoo. Most places have these rules but would require to just keep it covered up. I wouldn't quit unless you had something better. Tattoos are a dime a dozen anymore nowadays. If they have NEW rules or policies after you were hired than they have to allow your tattoos.

You have to be the one who decides if your personal pride and what that tattoo is signifying, means more than this job. Would your other opportunities be any different than this current one? Just somethings that I would consider. I hear you, I myself have a few pieces that mean more than just some foolish tattoo some college kid may have gotten drunk one night. They are a part of me and what I do just as much as anything else I represent.

Knowing what you went through, though, in '83 I am willing to bet that tattoo means more than any employer could imagine. Thank you Veteran for your sacrifice!

There are just sooo many people with tattoos nowdays, I don't see why he can't accept it. A lot of the places around here I go to, people have them "out for viewing". Just think about what's best for you. I realize it probably means a lot to you, but to the next, probably not so much. I have a couple from when I was in too, but easily covered with a t-shirt, and I don't mind. In my mind, it's not dishonoring you or your tat, but just a silly rule. If you can get a new job as good or better that will let you proudly display it, go for it!! But that's just my opinion.

thanks for your service. umm i would definatley talk to the boss about it because the only reason he can tell you to cover it up is because you earned the right to wear it!!! give him a chance to understand and then if he doesnt, look at your new job options.

It may sound kind of girly but you could always just put make-up on over it. Like some foundation or something similar. If your job really means that much I would think that would be better than losing some sentimental value.

Cover up isn't dark enough, and I'm assuming that you meant something like this http://www.tattoocamo.com/

Secure another job and tell your boss he's off his rocker, and see what he says. But you kind of take the risk of that happening with forarm tattoo's. I've been turned down for acouple of different jobs due to mine.

The best advice my Old Man gave me was to keep tattoo's were they couldn't be seen if I chose not too, or at leaste easily covered. I cringe every time I see some idiot with one on his neck or hands. May as well say "Minimum Wage for Life".

Cover it up unless you have a Union or Written Regulations its your employers discretion.

Devil Dog, here is how I see it. You represent your employer and his or her business if he does not want an employee to have visible tattoo then he has the right to tell you to cover it up. He is the one signing your paycheck, and you as an employee have the right to quit if you don't like it.

I've been thinking about this one, and I do get your point that you earned it, especially in Beirut.
I definately appreciate that and what you did for us.

The thing is though that it's still just a tat, and even though it does have great meaning,
no shirt covering it can take away that meaning or disgrace those who you served with.

Just my 2 cents.

Especially in this economy you are lucky to be in a field where you have opportunities. Many of us don't. We have laid off 13 in a company that formely was 80 employees. The motto is keep kissing butt til your lips are sore, then kiss some more. I am sorry to say that any job where you deal with customers, ie. patient, your employer has every right to ask you to cover your tat. Your tat is one to be proud of, and means something to you. and I agree that any patients that would be offended by it are narrow minded. However, they are still the customer, and your employer just does not want to lose sales, whether right or wrong. I have done sales in several fields, and I have always covered my tats. I like my tats, and outside of work I don't give a damn what anyone thinks of them. But when it comes to making money, it's a different story. The boss is right.
