Hello, I just purchased a used 1997 xlt touring sled...mint condtion..only 1700 miles on it...Now that I purchased the sled, im hearing from certain people that these sleds were known for bad cranks(this figures after I purchased it)..I found a website that listed the various years and models, and most said the xlt sp version was bad, but no mention of the touring additon..as far as I know these were the same motors?? were they setup different? are the touring xlt also known for bad motors? and last question, it mention that the 93-97 had the -03 motor, but late 97 model year switched to the -04 motor which soldved the engine troubles, how do i know which motor I have? I am worried now that I purchased a really nice mint machine, but now am gonna have to rebuild the engine.. it seems from reading that all the xlt had problems and its inevitable that im gonna have to have my engine rebuilt.... maybe im looking into this too much and worry about nothing..thank you...

after doing some research, I dont think the touring sleds were effected..according to parts list, it had the 4 output oil pump...I just wish there was an easy way to see the oil pump from the top or side of motor
ok update..hhee...I just peaked at the oilpump(i think..LOL...and it has 4 tubes coming from it..3 on one side and one on the other side..there are a total of 4 going to the engine...does this mean i have the updated oil pump, and shouldnt worry about the crank issues? thank you

you do have the updated oiler line so it should be less of a concern but the problem is still there i have a friend that had an updated xlt and the crank went out just like the older ones do how many miles are on the sled? i have seen some last for 100 miles and my cousin had one that just rolled over 15,000 miles when the crank went

i think you need to look for line running over near the clutch side bearing. Im pretty sure thats the update.
also the normal pump(i think) has 4 lines. 1 for case pressure to pump the oil and 3 for cylinder injection. not sure how the update worked with normal pump.
by the way my 97 had 4000 hard miles on it when we sold it and not a problem. wish we still had it because it had the xtra-12 soft ride for friends and wives.

Pump is actually shaft driven off the crank.
Got over 5500 on mine with the old style pump and not a problem yet. I wouldn't worry too much about it, just make sure it keeps using oil like it should.

it wont just stop using oil the motor will either start vibrating really bad and running poorly thats what thewayout440s sled did and another thing it can do is lock up or make a whining noise
