I was outside and tried to start my 97 xlt. and i flooded it(thats another story) I waited about 1/2 hr and put fresh plugs on it, and it started right away, but around 10 seconds in, it poped really loud from the motor...sled stayed running, and seems to idle fine.. was this just a backfire from too much gas? I never did this before as im a real newbie..engine only has 1700 miles on it...will this ruin the motor? or is this normal after a flooded engine..what did I just ruin or hurt?

If its still running fine I wouldn't worry. Probably just some unburnt fuel in the pipes

I have a 86, with alot more miles than yours, and when i got it a couple years ago, it did that every so often. Its been strong ever since, so its my opinion that your fine.

My dads sled would do that sometimes when he'd start it, and it now has 4700 miles on it and it has never caused us any trouble.

Id say its fine as long as the plugs and all look good. My dad has a 99 700 and it has popped since day one. Its always ran good and has over 9000 miles so we havent worried about it. I think its always done it while idling so its probably just excess fuel somewhere, but we have never looked into it so we have no idea whats causing it. Its one of those things that it might be fine and not a problem, or it could be something bad.

It'll be just fine. A buddy's sled does that every now and then and it still runs fine.

If it starts flooding alot......needle and seats.....If they are bad you can end up with unburnt fuel in your exhaust.
When you store it, turn the gas shut off -off and see if it starts better next time.

How hot was it outside? Remember its jetted for colder temps so when you start them in 70-80 degree days its going to be rich, smoky, and feel like you only have half the power. Dont over heat them. You should be fine, next time wait for a nice early cooler summer morning...just my 2cents

You should "Fog" the motor in the spring when you put it away, then leave it sit until Fall.

Starting it in the summer can pull humid air into the engine, putting moisture in it.

just my 2 cents

That's the reason why the exhaust is held on by springs.
