I got a 1993 Lincoln Continental with a blown motor, bad head gaskets. Tore it apart and it doesnt look good so just want to replace it and found a good replacement for cheap thats been rebuilt. Anyways, the donor is a 1992 ford taurus GL. I just want to confirm that the motor bolts right up with no problems. I want a direct motor swap. By the looks of it, it is but i want to be sure.

And i signed up on a ford forum, but didnt get any help so thought id just ask here see if anyone knows.

Thanks

As long as the engines are the same, I don't see why not. You will probably have to change over things like brackets, mounts and such, possibly getting into changing water pumps, alternators, and maybe more, but I think it's pretty possible.

What engines do both cars have? 3.0,3.8?

Both the 3.8 motors that are known to blow up. The donor im getting, im told it was rebuilt with the better gaskets and stuff, so i feel pretty safe in putting it in the car and not blowing up right away. hope it really was rebuilt and is a strong motor as im told.

I saw an under hood shot for the taurus and it looks almost exactly the same as far as the engine and all that as my lincoln. Ok so we know it fits now. Im pretty sure all the alternator and stuff is the same but maybe not, either way i have all my parts if they arent.

Anyone got a clue how to get the damn motor of the car? I heard something about removing the engine cradle, as in the complete motor and tranny from the car at once. How can i do this? Im having a hard time figuring this FWD car out. Its so much more complicated than the rwd cars its not even funny. Well to me its harder. This isnt my first car project, but first fwd so im stuck.

ya you can drop the whole front end out, but i dono if i want to do that with the lincoln. and it doesnt matter cuz i dotn quite have the equipment to lift the car to do it. All i have is an engine hoist.

So does anyone know how to pull the motor? The motor is pretty stripped down in the car still. I got the catylitic converters out of the way now. The whole top end is off including heads so i got some room to do stuff i guess.. I have no clue how to remove the motor from the transmission....

Well i think i know how to get it free from the trans now. But, do i need to remove the wheels, water pump, and crank pully? I have a book thats helping me, but barely. It just tells me to remove **** which i can figure out what i need to remove myself. It doesnt tell me how or where any of the stuff is so its not helping much. I cant get the damn water pump off and dono how the crank pully could come off either while in the car. It says i need to remove the wheels, crank pully and water pump.

If the tranny is bolted to the back of the engine, then you have to take the belt housing bolts out. then you have to get it free of the torque convertor. What style motor mounts?

Belt housing? Did you mean bell housing? And by back of the motor do you mean the back of the car of the motor, or where the crank output shaft is? Haha..

I got the torque converter unbolted. I took out all the bolts from the bell housing to motor, I THINK. It wont budge at all. Its still tight on there. I must be missing something that the motor is still bolted to but i have no idea what. No idea what style mounts cuz i know nothing of these cars. Im finding they are a b*tch to work on tho. And i will never buy a fwd car again if i think ill ever have to pull a motor or anything major in work. This is ridiculous to work on.

What I've had to do is pull the half-shafts and everything that connects the engine to the car. Put jackstands right behind the front subframe. Use the engine hoist to lower the whole assembly down. Pick up the front of the car more, maybe with the engine hoist and pull the motor and trans out from under it. It's a lot of screwing around, but in my mind, worth it. The factory puts them in from the bottom, so it's only logic that is how they come out. Once out you can switch the motor and all the parts that are different. I would leave the water pump and crank pulley on, it's going to be a b!tch to get them off in the car.

Is the starter holding them together yet?

Nope the starter is off, had to take it off to get the torque converter bolts off. I really wish i had a lift and could get the car in the air and remove the whole assembly (trans/motor and all) it would be tons easier. I am not going to attempt putting the motor in from the donor like this. I either get the whole thing dropped or i aint doing it haha.. I want to try and find a place to help me out for free or cheap. Like i want to do most of the work, i jsut need a lift and stuff that i dont have. I guess it is possible to do it with the engine hoist, i will try it and see how it goes.

What i dont know is how to get the whole assembly off. I mean, i have to remove the wheels, then what else? Thats whats stopping me. I dono what i all have to remove which is a huge pain. This car is definitly worth a motor swap, its really nice shape for a 93. Its got hardly any rust, real decent leather interior and all that good stuff. All in all its a nice luxury car and will be a nice daily driver.

Its just this ridiculous fwd. The rwd is soooo much easier to work on its not even funny. Ill prolly never buy a front wheel drive car again. I can do a motor on a rwd no problem.

i just dropped the tranny out of a Taurus yesterday and it wasn't hard to pull off once we got everything out of the way there were a lot of braces and stuff in the way though that may be whats making it stick in your Lincoln...
