One of my co-workers has asked me to do a good go-through on his sled before this winter. What he's asked me to do isn't all that difficult (drop the rear skid, swap out some upper boggies, open up the chaincase, new hifax, clean the clutches, grease the zerks, check everything over). He's pretty adamant about paying me. He doesn't want to take it to a dealer, because they'll charge too much. I'm not even sure where to begin on price. I'd rather just do a flat-rate, instead of an hourly charge. I have to drive 1/2 hour each way go pick up his sled with my truck and trailer, so keep that in mind as well. I figure I'll probably spend about a day working on it start to finish by myself.
Is $200 to much to ask? That would be just labor, he's supplying me with all the parts. I figure that's about a days wage, plus 40 miles of driving, and usage of my shop supplies (solvent, grease, towels, etc.). Way high, too low? No one's ever payed me to work on their stuff before, so I could use some opinions.

If he's a good buddy, I wouldn't charge him that much. Maybe you could do it on a weekend and get him to help and show him how everything works and what-not. Maybe drink a few beers while your at it.

X2
If he's a good bud, tell him to keep the $$ in his pocket, maybe just charge for the gas. That's all I do. It is nice to make a couple of bucks, but maybe one day he'll return the favor!!

75 bucks. I would keep it below a hundred, if it just takes a day or so.

$75 to $100 if hes a friend, $200 if you know him through a friend.
My dad's rebuilding a guys boat motor for him right now, and it's a 4.3 Chevy. My dad's replacing the block on it, as well as putting a new camshaft in it. The block thats going in it is my dads, and my dad is using our garage and tools, not the other guys. He's only charging $400 for all of that.

I agree with powermadd.
If he is a good buddy.. don't charge him and offer him to come help and watch so he learns. Friends are too hard to come by and what comes around goes around.
If he is a good friend he will bring over a pizza and some brews and pay for your gas to get the sled.
I have extended the offer to a friend before (although he didn't take me up on it).

If the guy ain't a good buddy, then tell him to bring the sled and $200.00 to yer place.

I wouldn't say he's a good friend. We do 1 or 2 short rides a year, but that's about the extent that we do something outside of work.
I've still got some time to think it over. I have to get my parents sled back together and out of my garage before I can bring in another one, and my sled is still in pieces shoved into the back corner. It's amazing how many projects you can have going at one time in a 1.5 car garage.

Charge the co-worker. If you don't he will expect more for less out of you the next time and the next time after that. people have a strange way of becoming greedy when they get a good deal. Then when you get ovrwhelmed and try to charge him later on for something it will be the end of any friendship you ever had with this person.
I say charge him half of what a shop mechanic would. you will both be satisfied.

Teach him how to do it. It would be a great learning experince. Like the saying goes, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish, feed him for life."

i usually charge half of most shops for friend of friends but for close friends its more like 1/4 if that an i usually invite the person to watch/have me show them what to check before every ride/season. but if im picking up/delivering i charge 25 bucks for anything out side of my town so... that has to be considered as well... it all adds up in the end... it more or less depends on if you feel nice or feel like a jerk to the guy..

Sounds like a good way to drink beer for the day and, if your married, get out of the house. As alot of people have stated, friends help friends. I have helped friends before and they never forget when you need something. I would do it for free.

Heavy machinery use as a payback? I like it!
I think I may do the work in exchange for a pizza or something. I have no problem having him over to help, but he's got 2 younglings and just finished building a house, so his free time is a bit limited. If he absolutely must pay me, I'll have him name his own price, and just agree to whatever he comes up with (provided it's not some redokulous sum of money).
Thanks for the opinions guys.

I always change a low amount to people I know. I did pretty extensive work on 3 sleds last winter and just charged them for parts/supplies that I used, and every one of them gave me $100+ as a tip. Let them pay labor by choice if they want to,if not no biggie. Its my prefered way to do it.

woodbooga: (WOOD-boog-ah), n. regional dialect, common to areas of New Hampshire and Maine including the towns of Ossipee, Alton, Farmington, Acton, and Lebanon; one who attempts to obtain free firewood to fuel woodburning appliances in an effort to mitigate expenses related to home heating with fossil fuels. Frequently used as a term of derision by non-woodburners who mock the presence of loose bark and other wood waste in the beds of their pickup trucks.
