The 800 twins randomly suffer from PTO bearing failure, usually causing the end to shear off. The ratio is like 1 in 100, but the guys that have it happen yell like crazy. This usually happens between 1000 and 5000 miles. There's a guaranteed fix, that requires having the case split and line bored, and having a wider bearing put in. Cost is a couple hundred bucks. That's the condensed version, there's a whole long a$$ thread on it over at HCS. --edit-- Here's a direct link -- http://www.hardcoresledder.com/forums/in...pic=264414--edit 2-- Owning a '05 800 twin, I can say that they are quite beefy motors, but it can't keep up with my storm 800 triple/triple stock... And now I have EFI on the 800 trip/trip, it's not even in the same league.
95 - Storm 800 - Modded - AKA: FrankenStorm - Totalled near 100mph at Tug Hill!
96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...
95 - RXL -- Sale Pending --
05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

Like poo kid said some had problems but very few. The problem is really exagerated on internet forums IMO. I have an 02 XC 800 with reeds and it has way more power than I need. I have only had it pinned once and that was enough. I think you being would be prety happy with a 700 but its your dicision. All in all they are pretty good sleds as long as you dont lose a crank bearing. I just try to take it easy on her the first 15-20 miles of the year to re-break it in and then have my fun. Mine is actually for sale for 2500. I dont know the market in your area but mine is pretty cheap in my area IMO. Lots are going for over 3000.
BTW is it just an XC or an Edge X cause that could make a difference in price as well.

As far as reliability goes I think it is as good as any other motor. The only bad thing about the 800 was the gas mileage. With a little jetting that would probably be ok to.

Heres another one. 2 of my friends have experienced the problems of this sled ( One was an 01' 700, the other an 02' 800 ).
http://startinglineproducts.com/catalog....ductID=153
When my friends 700 lost the bearing, we thought the clutch was screwed up where it mounted or something, because the clutch was all lose. It still ran, just backfired and died. Really it was the crank that was going up and down, left and right.

700s arent too hard to find, i bought one last year and its been the best sled ive ever owned. My friend has a polaris rmk 800 and the only problem so far is it siezing, but that was because the rope on the recoil starter broke and inside the recoil starter case is where the drive band is for the oil pump, and it got snapped by the broken rope.

They are great motors, and most of them don't have problems, but it happens enough to be a known problem. If you had one, I really wouldn't worry about it.

I have friends that own the 700 w/3,000 miles and a 800 w/just over 5,000 miles. Both sleds are rode very hard, neither one has had any problems. The only complaint for both are, how much gas they like to eat.
SLP has a kit as stated. There's a guy called indy dan (Indy Specialties) that everyone speaks highly about for his crank repairs, on those sleds.

I am really interested in this edge because i always wanted one If it has Every thing that I want/like on it I drove my brothers 02 zr 800 efi, with a ripsaw on it and it felt like it was to much power but most people tell me if u have a 600 you are going to want more power and if u have a 7 most people will want more power and most people around here have triple 7's or 800 twins If I did buy it I plan on a 1.5 intense camoplast track, would this help put the power to the ground more easier/ smoother than a ripsaw with over 200 studs in it. Acouple edge questions 1. are the running boards wider than an evolved
2. How comfortable are they to drive.
I am really surprised that I seen this today in a town with just under 1500 people, I know the guy so I might be able to talk him down a couple hundred dollars or he might be into trading a indy 500 because the guy said it is to much for him If he wanted my 500 Do u think I should throw in a couple of gallons of oil and a semi good stock 98 xc 600 track? keep suggestions coming. Even better for me it is not listed in the paper, craigs list, or ebay And of all things it is on a back road where hardly no body goes except me I will take some pics today of it and try to post them and will see if there is any thing on it that can be fixed so I can get it for less This sled might be waiting for me to give it a good home. But who knows

if he said the sled is too much power for him than you might want to take a really thorough look through everything because thats usually a red flag. just my .02

I had a 02 Edge x 700 and now have a 2004 XC SP 800, both have been nice machines. Put alot of miles on a 1995 storm and 2000 XCR 800, the triples have alot more power but the XC SP is more fun on the trails.

1. Yes
2. Very
They are also very fast. My friends with just a hot seat performance clutch kit would keep right next to my fusion on hardpack all the way to 95, than I would start walking away. Only other thing done to my sled was a can that was about 20lbs lighter than stock, and he a had a rumble pack.

I would highly suggest a taller luged track on an 800. the stock tracks dont provide enough traction for the power it seems. I feel alot of track spin on mine when I can it. Id suggest at least a 1.25 track if not a 1.5.

I'm asking $3300 for my Edge X with 2700 miles. It's far from stock, mostly cosmetic. The only thing that adds any value is the 144".
I need big jugs on my sled, cuz my girl doesn't.

That is what I thought
1998 Polaris Indy 500 chassis with 98 Xc 600 motor
SLP ceramic coated pipe with SLP can
V-force reeds
4 inch pivot riser
Gutted Air Box
EPI clutch kit soon to be installed
Maybe some pro tapers
1998 XC 700 water-cross sled
SLP twin pipes
Some light weight parts
Water-cross mods include taking the parts u do not need
This includes removing the seat replacing gas tank and IFS bars.
