Did the swap, well, had a buddy do it for me that has done it before. Ran into a few snags, ended up using the radius rods from the XLT 600 it came from, along with the footwells. Tried to use the shocks, but it was too high, so we used some from a Honda 250R he had sitting on the shelf. Recharged them and slapped them on. Had to take out the sway bar. Only thing I'd like to do now, is try to find a way to get my ski stance a little wider, I'm afraid she's gonna be kinda tipsy as is. Here's some pictures, forgive me, the sleds are kinda dirty....

Looks pretty good, She does sit up quite a bit higher. I don't know what shocks and springs you got on the front but you can probably just unscrew your springs a bit to loosen up the tension. That should lower your front down.

rear end swap looks good. look forward to hearing about the differance in the ride. holy crap your font end sits high now, id deffinatly look for ways to stabilize it now, with it being so high and sway barless.

Well, I'm thinking maybe I can get those shocks lower, or I can screw out my radius rod ends to get it so my stance is a bit wider, but still, kinda thinking its gonna be tipsy. I need to look into that before it start snowing. Other then that, need to peel off those old trail stickers and registration numbers, havent done that, been planning to, the Storm has some too. Do that, wash and wax, then I'm ready for the trails!

use shorter shocks, and that will widen your front end, as well as lower the front so it wont be so high. use xtra-10 or XC-10 shocks, that should do the trick
1999 Polaris XC 500
-holeshot skid plate
-fox reservoir front track shock
-fox front shocks
-xenon low-beam bulb (very helpful at night)
Just add gas and snow!

Why dont you put the xtra12 in the front? It is a bit of work but its not bad, and it will widen the front about 6in if i remember right.

^ I agree. Put in the xtra 12 front. Sitting that high and narrow, you are going to have handling issues. This is how wide the front of a 12 should be. I'm guessing by looking at the pics. it's going to be about 4-5" wider than what you have now.

What would I have to do in order to put the Xtra 12 up front, never looked into it much. Also, can the same be accomplished if I just put Xtra 10 shocks up front?

I think putting the x-12 front end in will require changing the belly pan. I get the feeling he didn't feel like doing that much work to it.

I took the belly pan off the XLT so i could get the footwells out and put those in the 500. Anyone know what work is required to put the Xtra 12 up front?

You need the trailing arm rear mounts off the xlt, there just rivitted on and the upper shock mounts off the xlt,2 bolts. The shock mounts will bolt into your 500 just have drill one hole the other is already there.

some extra 12's are bolt in some aren't for hte front. They changed every year. I think the 1996 xlt special will work but look into it closely your self. You really just need longer radius rods, tie rods, and shocks then make a sway bar extender.

96 xlt/sp requires the belly pan with high shocktowers.

What about the X-Tra off the 95 RXL? Look at the one I sold you UPK. I believe that chassis had the short towers but longer trailing arms and rods with a sway bar that should switch over.

So if I used the longer radius rods and tie rods, I could get away with using my Honda 250R shocks and I'd sit wider? How hard to put the mounts for the trailing arms on my 500?
